Around The NL Central In Five Sentences; Pie to Minors?

The Cubs get more than enough sentences around here, so here's a look at our divisional brothers:

  • Despite all of their pitching injuries, a shaky closer, and having Cesar Izturis in the lineup most days, the Cards continue to soldier on.
  • Only two NL teams have worse records over the past ten games than the 3-7 Cubs, and the Brewers, with four-homer-hittin', veggie-burger-eatin' Prince Fielder, are one of them.
  • With all of the Reds' young talent, plus Homer Bailey and Jay Bruce waiting in the wings, only a numbskull could get in the way of their becoming a very dangerous team, very soon.
  • That bargain Nate McLouth apparently struck with the devil continues to pay handsome dividends.
  • Sorry, but regardless of Kaz Matsui's contributions to the Astros' recent hot string, I cannot read or hear his name without immediately thinking of the term "anal fissure."
As for Felix Pie, Paul Sullivan writes/reports/spectulates? in the Tribune that one of the possible "changes" Lou Piniella has recently referred to could be the demotion of Felix Pie to Iowa, with Andres Torres--on a 23-game hitting streak for the I-Cubs that has lifted his average to .352--coming to Wrigley Field. Rogers points out that Pie is hitting .061 (2-for-33 with 22 K's) when the count against him gets to two strikes.

Comments

Since their uplifting 9th inning 3-run rally against Kerry Wood and Alfonso Soriano to defeat the Cubs, the Brewers have lost 6 straight. The Cubs, meanwhile, have basically sucked on the mound, in the field and at the plate since then. A good homestand would be a very, very good idea.

Don't get too excited about Andres Torres, Phil, er, Paul. He is the classic journeyman whose 20+ hitting streak is owed,in no small measure, to his bunting prowess[for which he should be accorded all due respect]. Call him Juan Pierre Light. Also, re: 'your' Iowa Cubs, Hoffpauir's return resulted in the demotion of the team's leading run producer [Jake Fox] to AA; sort of like one of Viagra's side effects being man-breasts...Kevin Hart was stretched to almost 70 pitches yesterday and whiffed six in three+ scoreless innings - no walks!

Are the Cubs looking at Hart as a starter or a long reliever now? Torres's numbers are pretty impressive at this point, being outmatched in average and obp by only Matt Murton in Iowa (who STILL has yet to hit anything for extra bases--21 singles), but the fact he's doing a lot of it with bunting and he still strikes out a ton is not encouraging. He makes more sense as a bench player than Pie does, though, and Pie has been starting only sporadically. However, if the Cubs aren't sticking with Pie as a starter, they need to look for one. Reed Johnson's numbers don't look so great anymore. What are the chances Ronny Cedeno or Eric Patterson (who's AAA numbers look pretty weak) get a shot at CF if Pie is demoted?

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.
