Floyd Deal Seems Imminent

The AP is even picking up on the story now and says that Cliff Floyd deal is going to happen any time now. It looks to be a one year deal with the possibility of some type of player option for 2008.

Is the news about Eyre, Dempster and Wood losing weight old news? Cuz I am just finding out about that. Two points, ok actually just one... 1) How lazy was our team under Dusty when Eyre is saying stuff like this.... Eyre did mention that he started his offseason training program earlier this winter ("We're going to win a lot of games this year, and I want to pitch in them") Ummm so can we infer from Mr. Eyre he expected to be on a shitty team so he didn't stay in shape last year?

If a player option means that he's cool with being a bench guy, then I'm ok with that. Seems worth it to me if that was the sticking point.

If the Cubs were lazy under Baker last year, then they will be this year as well.. Piniella and Baker have the same, almost identical, baseball philosophy. Damn Hendry.

CWTP- Why don't you blast MIKEC as he he went after Baker like 3 times alone today, let alone almost every day for the past 4 years? At least try and be consistent man. Everything you said about me and Hendry should be said about him and Baker, but I don't hear you say anything. Double standard? Oh yeah...

Is this the new argument? Piniella and Baker are exactly the same? Everything I have seen about Piniella and the way he runs a team and treats his players is in direct contrast with the way Baker does it. From what we have seen from Baker he accepts mediocrity, holds no one accountable and tries to be everyone's best friend. Piniella doesn't accept mediocrity, holds players accountable, and really doesn't care if he is your friend or not. He will tell you what is on his mind if he wants to. You talking about two guys who are night and day. Some things they may do similar but that in no way makes them even remotely similar in how they handle a team. It is like saying Baker was just like Don Baylor because he liked to bunt and sac bunt a lot.

I love that NEIFI instead of those blank faces btw. detroit fans will understand. I have faith in LouPa (for no other reason than he is NOT Dusty) that Floyd will be used properly off the bench and that Murton will own LF and be allowed to develop his hitting in the lineup most everyday.

crunch: I sure hope that neither Cedeno nor Perez makes the team. A point Rob has made repeatedly is that we need a good right-handed pinch-hitter with some pop, which the Cubs lack. Failing that, I'd rather see a guy like McGehee, who can play a lot of positions and has some doubles-power make the squad. I realize we need a utility infielder (which should be DeRosa, as we should have made a play for someone else to be our starting 2B), but I guess I envision Theriot taking that role. Maybe we can work out a trade to get Neifi back? J/K

A point Rob has made repeatedly is that we need a good right-handed pinch-hitter with some pop, which the Cubs lack." im just going on what's most likely gonna be here. there's only 1 bench IF'r right now who can play up the middle, so there's a good chance he'll have a friend on the bench with him. ward's got 1st and occasional OF if REALLY desperate...pagan has all 3 OF...floyd LF and maybe occasional 1st...blanco C/1st...theriot supposedly pretty much everything but C (though doubtful for 3rd/RF)... it looking like cedeno or perez unless something weird like scott moore or buck coats showing something really out of character of their current development in march. that said, its the role of the 2nd bench IF'r so its doubtful they'd wanna keep cedeno around for that in the majors seeing 10ab's a week on a good non-injury-impacted week.

btw...though not ideal, lou (the lou i saw in seattle, anyway) will sacrifice an OF bat for OF defense so i wouldnt be shocked to see matt murton taking RF time away from angel pagan on certain days when jones is resting (if still in RF) in order to find floyd some ab's. i say jones resting (assuming soriano isnt injured) cuz any game where floyd is ideal to play...well, so is jones, really.

crunch: I know it's likely we're goint to see a weak-hitting, poor-OBP middle-infield reserve (and my money is on Tomas Perez, unless the Cubs can swing a deal for someone else's junk), but I'm just saying that I hope we are able to get a righty bat with some power instead. I'm having visions of Cedeno striking out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th...that, or popping up the first pitch after the opposing closer has walked the bases loaded.

Folks, 2007 may finally be the year Angel Guzman arrives. He was very close in 04 as you may know, then went down with an injury at the worst possible time--he was literally a week away from coming to the majors. He's still younger than Prior and Z. And he is 100% healthy, threw great in the fall leagues, and Fleita (Cubs minor league director) was raving about his progress at the Cubs Convention. Apparently, Gooz has re-discovered his wicked curve, which is what made him a Top 10 pitching prospect in all of baseball in the first place. Prediction: Wade Miller will begin the season as the 5th starter, but he'll either accept a middle reliever/spot starter job (the old Glendon Rusch "utility pitcher" role) or get traded elsewhere by June 1. Gooz will be the #5 guy.

Eric, I certainly hope so. I predicted him for a breakout last year, but he wasn't able to get the job done in the bigs when he had his chance. I think he has the ability to control his stuff better than he showed in the majors last year, and just needs to rely on throwing to spots more than trying to throw the ball past everyone, and he'll be OK. His DIPS in the PCL last year seem much better than his outcome ERA wise. I wonder if he had a low 3's ERA for Iowa if people would have be more prone to give him a chance. All that being said, there is not much opportunity for him to learn at the bigs at this point. He is going to have to kick the door in to get into the rotation, since he's about 8th on the depth chart.

guzman is a talent - if he truly is ready, it would be good to see it at triple A before we bring him up to the rotation - Like the Angels did with a young Ervin Santana and Jeff Weaver. From early reports, Prior will be ready at the start of spring. Assuming Prior is somewhere between his 2003 season and his 2006 season, he will be a solid #3 starter. (Strong assumption, but he has the talent). By adding a potential young stud in Gooz, we have a serious overload of pitching --- with Z and Prior eligible for Free Agency. If Gooz progresses -- the end of the season rotation could look like: z Lilly Prior Hill Goozman ...if Gooz is dominating triple A, the cubs would likely have to do what the Angels did with Jeff Weaver when his younger brother came up to the bigs, .....Release Marquis. In addition, we'll have Wade Miller, Sean Marshall, Marmol, and Rusch waiting in the wings --- If Gooz really shows his A stuff, it woudl be an opportune time to trade some of this young pitching for Baldelli or Carl Crawford.

releasing marquis with a 21m investment isnt likely...in his first year of contract, anyway. r.hill seems to be a sink/swim guy, not a surprise like marshall. a lotta people got great things marked for him and his time is now. the 5-man is pretty set if prior is healthy. the big question seems to be what to do with w.miller if prior is 100% ready to go come april. 08 should be interesting, though...marquis/lilly/r.hill/prior seem to be in the plans. still a long way and a lotta arm wear/tear off from talking about 08, though. some may not wanna hear it, but with all the money thrown around the hot topic next season could be why the signing of lilly/marquis kept the cubs from signing Z longterm even if lilly/marquis turn in decent 4.00era mid-level performances.

    Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

    Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

    4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

    5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

    Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

    I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

    Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

    i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

    it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

    I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

    I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.
