I received a 2007 Cubs desk calendar that every once in awhile comes up with a good trivia question. If there's one that stumps me that I need to go search for the answer on google(well actually I just have to look at the bottom of the calendar), I may post them on the slow days. So try and answer without a web search:
"Who was the first member of the Cubs to hit an All-Star Game home run?"

I know he hit one and I think it was in Shea Stadium. There was a news interuption and we nver got to see it. I may be confusing it with one Billy Williams hit, but I know George's was before Billy.

I think there have been a grand total of six Cub All-Star HRs: Galan 1936, Sauer 1952, Banks 1960, Altman 1961, Williams 1964 and Dawson 1991. Next time this comes up, everyone can be prepared.

it was a "fun fact" during a scoreboard trivia game at the AS game at Comerica Park season before last. Never heard of him up till that point. I've seen it in the SB Tribune as a Cubs history note before too.

Hey everyone...yes I'm still officially a writer here, but I look at it as more "writer emeritus" which means don't expect anything from me, but I might pop in with something to say if the feeling strikes me. I got really burned out (on a lot of things) last year and my participation in TCR was one of the things which fell by the wayside. Fortunately Rob, Phil and Trans were more than capable of picking up the slack and that made it a lot easier to walk away from day-to-day writing duties, something I had been doing for five years. I've still been reading every day, though, so even though I'm not posting I'm still here to see what's going on. I'm still around and since I started my personal blog last month I've realized that I miss writing. By the way, thanks for the hits -- I tripled my traffic yesterday from all the visits from the comments here (which gives you an idea of how small my reading audience is), and if you're interested in reading about where I travel to, what I eat, and how I raise my daughter, I hope you'll come back and visit more. Tell your friends! I do feel bad about just sort of walking away from the site the way I did, but understand that that was how it had to be. I was ready to give it up completely but the guys here convinced me that wasn't the best decision and they were right. Like I said, the site is in very capable hands with Rob, Trans and Phil, and you guys. Hopefully MVN can get its act together soon and figure out a way to keep the site up 24 hours a day, and then we can all get back to doing what we like to do, which is root for the Cubs. Thanks!

They could also start putting ads on the players jerseys, hey that could be a great deal for MLB too. Turning a blind eye to the steroid problem was a wonderful deal for MLB too, look how much money they have made the past 10 years. Just because it was a good deal financially doesn't mean it is a good idea overall. This deal just eliminates the chance of millions of eyes seeing more baseball and that is a shame. But I can't say i expect anything different from Selig.

No, Manny, I'm as pissed off as you are. But from a business perspective, 30 extra million dollars for alienating a couple hundred of fans that aren't going to stop watching games (and will switch to MLB.tv) is a win/win situation for MLBAM. Can't blame them, but we can indeed hate them.

BTW, 750,000 EI Packages were sold last year. MLBAM expects to lose 100-200K subscriptions that will likely be offset by the boost in MLBAM-MLBtv subscriptions. Genious move, Selig is a man of money.

HA HA I even think the MLB numbers of 100-200K is low. But hey, I won't be switching to DirecTV and I will not be doing the crappy internet thing. I have only heard horror stories about that. I guess everything is about the all mighty dollar in sports and screw the fan. Sad but true, but again, just because you make more money doing something does not mean it is a smart business move. Couple hundred thousand, I tried to say. Like Joe Sheehan said, who knows far more than I do: "MLB is going to tick off a subset of that group: EI subscribers who either have Dish Network or cable. However, they’re not going to lose that group of people as fans of MLB as a whole. Some of those people will switch to DirecTV, others will make do with MLB.tv, still others will not purchase a package and live without the extra games. The number of fans that MLB will lose because of this decision, however, could fit in my living room. You simply don’t go from being such a big fan of baseball that you would purchase 1200 games a year on satellite to a non-fan based on one decision." I don't recall anyone making a fuss when NFL decided to sell its exclusive Big Ticket rights to DirecTV.

Manny, Oh sorry, I didn't realize you were 'giving' the tickets. I thought you were selling them, my bad. And since, you already bought the season tickets, their value is a sunk cost. Quite noble of you. So we have one person, scalping free tickets, deriving profit from an entity which he does not belong to. A lamprey, would be the most apt way I can describe that. And we have a second person, working for an organization and trying to make it as profitable as he can. And the lamprey is deriding the other guy. Amazing.

Apparantly Macias doesn't like suchi or fighting hams because he's back in the bigs...well kind of. Washington Post reporting he's signed a minor league deal with the Nats. If there was any doubt the Nationals would contend for worst club in the bigs this season, this move should put them over the top.

Switch hitter, healthy, kills lefty pitching. Platoon him with JJones againtst leftys; can give Murton a day off against real tough righties. Played for a winner all his career. I know his glove has some holes, but you don't need him every day. Floyd looks like he could turn into Kal Daniels in a hurry.

Instead of being upset at MLB for selling only via DirectTV, why don't you direct your anger at TribCo? After all, it was TribCo suits who in their ultimate wisdom decided not to give their crappy product away for free 130-140 times a year. Or, you could direct some negative karma to my cable operator, who has WGN on the lineup a mere 10 miles from my town but not actually in my town. Nice.

hell, im upset about the MLB-EI thing, but what manny or anyone else does with tickets or what anyone's local cable provider does with WGN i could care less about. that's just me being my selfish self, though... seriously, this EI-exclusive crap sucks. we can hold it 'business being business' but it doesnt serve the fans. someone brought up the topic of public service vs. business earlier...nice piece, really...tieing into govt/public services. if we ran govt. like a business we wouldnt have well maintained roads, public transportation, and other things we take for granted that are pretty much run at a loss for the sake of the community at large. this may be good for MLB the business, but the long/short of it is the deal was made at the expense of the most hardcore of supporters of the product based on the speculation (that's mostly true) that people who care enough to pay 140 a year to watch baseball wont abandon the game. to quote bill hicks..."its kinda a cock suck...isnt it?"

I was thinking about switching to Direct TV, but Dish Network gives me WGN, and Comcast Sports Net on the mid level package for much cheaper. I get 95% of the Cubs games and I am happy. It is almost like being back in the old days when WGN used to carry most of the Cubs games. Though I would like that MLB channel. Baseball is far behind the other leagues in establishing that.

I still live in the Chicago area? The closest I ever lived to Chicago was a little town called Paris, Illinois and that was when I was like 5 years old. Did Arizona for over 20 years, and Georgia for 3, and now on the far western side of Iowa.

Call me a throwback but I've got no cable, and instead I'm using the savings to attend all the Cubs visits to PNC. Otherwise I stick to the audiofeed from MLB online- easier to work in the lab listening to just radio anyway. Are the MLB suits going to screw me too? Like exclusivity for Sirius or something?

it's exclusive to XM radio actually, but the Internet TV and radio feeds I think are going to remain the same. I may invest in the EI package this year and get a slingbox since I'm rarely home when the games are on...

Rob, I'll do you one better. Just buy the sling box and hook it up in a family member's house in the chicago area. This way you will get all the games for free and no blackouts. I'm think of doing this as my mom has a spare bedroom back in chicagoland that has a cable hook up but no tv!

Manny, Ask someone who has taken an accounting class to explain the concept of 'sunk cost' to you. It has a lot of relevance to baseball, so it would behoove you to understand it, outside of your ticket scalping operation.

Are you going to call up the Cubs box office and say 'you know what, these tickets aren't scalping to well this year, I am going to go ahead and sell them back to you'. The money is spent, you're not getting it back. Sure you can scalp the tickets, like but you're not getting the money back from the Cubs, are you? You're also not 'giving' anyone anything, you're selling. Do you not understand the difference between giving and selling? I think you're future employers may want to check that PSU degree, maybe even your HS diploma.

Manny, I didn't say that the tickets were a sunk cost. I only said they were a sunk cost for you, because you were altruisticly giving them away. If you're giving them away, you're not going to recover them by a possible sale, are you? Here's the pertinent quotes: "And I am actually giving people the opportunity to go to Cubs games." Refering them to them as a sunk cost, was only in the context that you give them away, which I know you don't do, being a lamprey. So in additon to being a lamprey, you're also a hypocrite for getting upset at someone who is doing his job to the best of his abilities (and to the benefit of his employers), when you willing and happily use that same enterprise to improve your own wealth at the expense of the very same people you're so worked up about defending. I am not sure if scalping tickets via ebay or whatever is against the law in IL and whichever state you now reside in, but the associated income tax evasion certainly is. If you were giving the tickets away, however, you would have a moral leg to stand on. Have you seen the movie Fever Pitch? That's what real fans do with their season tickets.

    I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…


    Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

    They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

    I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

    Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error? 

     

    Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

     

    Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

    i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

    i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.
