TCR Writer Demands 5 Years

Today when asked by the Podunk Free Press about his current contract status, TCR writer Rob G. had this to say:
"Rob G. demands that a new deal be done by Opening Day, otherwise you give Rob G. no choice but to test the blogging free agent waters. That's what Rob G. thinks. I know Evan Brunell spent a lot of money this offseason on the new site. I hope he has more for Rob G's contract. I'm ready to sign and I'll do my job this year if a deal doesn't get done, but if there's no new deal by Opening Day, Rob G. must go."
In unrelated news, Zambrano backed off his comments from earlier this week and says they were misconstrued. He also said the Cubs made their first formal multi-year offer "a five-year proposal 'very close' to what the San Francisco Giants gave free agent pitcher Barry Zito this winter. That would mean an offer worth close to $90 million." If Z is willing to take the shorter deal so he can cash-in again in five years, it seems like the finalizing of a deal is a mere formality. He also leaves Cubs fans with this message of optimism:
‘‘This is the team that gave me the opportunity to play baseball since I was 16 years old. I want to stay here. ... I want to sign with the Cubs. But I just don’t want to talk about contracts during the season.’’
While disappointed that he stopped referring to himself in the third person, the (apparent) sense of loyalty to the franchise is an encouraging sign.

Rob G -- You deserve the money, despite the fact that you are occassionally overly emotional on the keyboard. Even so, you are the wordhorse of TCR and you deserve a long-term deal. As for Z, five years is reasonable for both sides. Sign him up and let's move on. Good luck with you negotiations.

I'm really hoping Z's case doesn't get to arbitration. That could be really ugly. 5 years, $95 mil. Let's do it.

I'm concerned that TCR overuses you and that you might be prone to break down in the coming years. But we're in a tough spot. You're clearly our #1 at this point. Trans and AZ Phil slot in nicely somewhere in the 2-3 area, Ruz is the reliable vet at #4 and Cubnut is the guy just breaking in and earning his stripes. John Hill = Mark Prior

Ambulance chasers go after the Hot Tub ...only in America. http://www.injuryboard.com/view.cfm/Topic=201 from ask an attorney website... Hot tubs have always been associated with stress relief and leisure. If left untreated, though, a hot tub can become a dangerous product full of bacteria and other germs that can leave an unsuspecting bather seriously ill. The hot water in a spa can be the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. Users have complained of conditions ranging from relatively minor skin rashes to serious disorders such as Legionnaire's disease. Proper upkeep of any hot tub is extremely important. Doctors recommend the continual use of water cleaning substances such as chlorine and bromine. Failure to properly maintain a hot tub or spa can result in legal liability for the owner. See your doctor if you have experienced serious health problems after using a hot tub. In addition, it may be important to contact an attorney who can help you protect your legal rights. Usually, we don't give 5-year deals as we need more scrutiny involving your medical history. For instance, I understand you have some swelling in the main knuckle on the pinkie finger of your RH. This could affect your delivery and follow-through with the return key. If you missed any blogs because of it last season, this could effect the overall term of a 5-year deal. Then again, we do have some depth at the writer position. In looking at your stats from last year however, it would appear as if your obp (on-blog percentage) is very high. So - I'd have to say in summary that we are well-served by re-upping you to another 5-year deal!

although i am for resigning rob g. we will still have to seriously look at his W/T (word to typo) ratio. we don't want to see a trend of this increasing. also what about the rumors that rob g's typing hand has been experiencing tendinitis cos he was out pitching a baseball? we'll have to put a clause in his contract about that too.

this makes me feel much better....i knew those Z comments were just weird and didn't make any sense. make it an even 100 for 5 and I bet it's done. this gives us a core of: Z lilly lee soriano ramirez around for a long long time. sure we won't have much more money to spend but when you've got the core of your rotation AND lineup locked up long term, you just need to make smart decisions about using youngsters and making smart trades for the rest. now about that.....

I think sports stars talk in the 3rd person so when their quotes are printed in the paper, you don't have to guess who the speaker is. It just makes it that much easier. Marketing.

Piniella did more in a few days as manager than Dusty did in his 3 years. Make a big time free agent believe this is the place to play.

I'm going to make a subtle, sarcastic comment for a moment: If Evan Brunell doesn't get Rob G. signed, he deserves to be fired right now. Look how he's mismanaged guys like Ruz in the past. This guy has done nothing good for this blog since he started. I've had it up to here with his dumb personnel decisions and giving away good writers for nothing. This guy has done a horrible job since he came on. Rob G. is worth every darn dime and if you don't pay him, well sir, you can sign your own death warrant. FIRE BRUNELL. WE WANT STEVE STONE.

if the contract is not hammered out by openin day... Come see us @ CubsHub! ;)

Rob G. demands a full no-trade clause, Rob G. doesn't want to be traded for 2 promising journalist students and an ITBNL if readership dips. Rob G. also wants an opt out after 2 years. It's well-known that writers reach their prime in the 30-33 range and Rob G. wants to cash in again in a few seasons. Reports of Rob G. suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome and chronic tendonitis are false. Rob G. just had some food poisoning over the offseason, didn't have time to train properly and is still recovering. Rob G. would also like to thank God.

I personally worry about long term effects of carpal tunnel syndrome for Rob. His overuse at a young age could lead to injuries down the line. I'm not sure he's worth the money. Also, he may get fat and lazy.

Not only writers should be at stake here. I hereby demand at least 1 case of Old Style if I am to stay as a poster on the CubReporter Blog! No negotiation. A six pack won't cut it. Neither will a twelve. In fact, make it a 30pack. So Sayeth the God of WAR!

WPZ: Ruz is the reliable vet at #4 Uh...I hate to break it to you, but Ruz is way past his prime. FEHCOTA puts his chances of ever returning to the Notorious BIG leagues at slim to none. The guy hasn't even posted since the switch to the new layout took place. My guess is that Burnell was putting him through some washcloth drills and disaster struck sometime around May of last year. If you want a reliable #4, pray for a trade for Yellon. By the way, I heard John Hill was attempting a comeback in theMexican

deal on the table for robg 3/44... that's 3 years and 44 articles submitted to print publications to be hawked on TCR. seriously, though...congrats on the expanding blog-meets-publishing-world pieces you've carved out. you should sell your forehead to Under Armor for ad space...make a few bucks...put Golden Palace in their place.

Maybe Cubnut would be a more productive blogger if you didn't have Mr. Hanky as his icon.

Love that #20 comment - I was thinking the same thing - Mr hanky. Isnt that logo in white - at least thats how it appears on the caps that I see.

"rob g. deserves ten years, but with the possibility of parole after 6." -dc nice one, dc. absolutely hilarious!

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
