LOU SITS JJ AGAINST A LEFTY?! Can Pagan get on against this strike-out pitcher? Intrigue for tonight...

I like the lineup. Let's see if Murton can get going now that this is his third game in a row... It'd be good to see DeRosa do something, too...

"Halladay to DL with acute appendicitis, expected to miss about a month." OWCH! Bummer...

Donnie Veal (1-4, ERA ~ 6.00) who thinks maybe he's been trying too hard in AA wrote this in his latest Journal entry: "Apparently, as a pitcher, when you pitch ahead in the count, the hitters get themselves out. When you pitch behind in the count, you get hit... hard! I already knew that, I'm just finally starting to do it." D V has walked 22 and struck out 31.

What a strange creature this Pat Burrell is. He hits home runs, with men on base, in his home ball park. The Cubs should look into acquiring such a player.

Actually, E-Man, it's Philly BAT -- singular. They have 5 runs on 4 hits -- 2 HRs by Burrell.

Looking like it could be a loooong road trip -- the Cubs never hit Garcia or Lieber (not that they are hitting anyone right now), then 4 with the Mets. Hendry needs to schedule more games against the Nats.

this team just looks more and more like a .500 club. all that money spent and still too many innings killed by automatic outs.

"Hendry needs to schedule more games against the Nats." LOL! Could we play them for an entire season? My prediction was at .500 or a game below, I think, in our pool. Objectively, I didn't (and don't) think they are much better than that. I really, really, hope I'm wrong.

And the problem with being a .500 team is if we don't win in the next couple years we are screwed with backloaded contracts. I wish we would have gone into rebuilding mode, but eh well. Maybe we can pull of an amazing trade to get another bat. I'm not sure who out there is available at SS or 2B, but Izzy and DeRosa aren't going to cut it.

i think DeRosa is every bit as limited as Jones. seems to have a single-plane swing - and if the ball ain't on that plane, it's whiffin time. just a shame that after some incredible FAs changed teams in the past several years that the big spending came in an off-year for FAs.

"ust a shame that after some incredible FAs changed teams in the past several years that the big spending came in an off-year for FAs." Our FA pitchers are doing well. The offense will get it going - but "when" it happens we're likely out of it for the Division.

*What a strange creature this Pat Burrell is. He hits home runs, with men on base, in his home ball park. The Cubs should look into acquiring such a player. * Or as he's called in my house now Pat "F*cking" Burrell. This guy sucks. I live in PA, you can trust me.

"this team just looks more and more like a .500 club." #15 I couldn't agree more. I think that's exactly what they are- .500 at best. It's obviously a vast improvement from last season but not too much to be excited about.

As a big fan of the made up stat 'NP/PA' I happen to really like Burrell. I think he'll make believers out of many of you before the series is over.

FONTENOT hit another homerun tonight leading the Iowa Cubs to their 8th win in a row. 6HR, 24 RBI .// 348 .385 1.020

he'll be up soon enough...ronnie's gotta play somewhere and they gotta keep his bat in the lineup or move him up. maybe his next stop is some time in LF/CF or the bigs.

woops...seems like he should be up soon enough...ronnie's blah blah blah...i meant to say. no talk of adding fontenot to the roster that ive heard of or a move to LF/CF...just speculation.

just got back from Dodger Stadium, Randy Wolf sure can pitch a game too. :) And Ken Griffey is as fat in person as he is on TV.

Fontenot can't be called up. He's not even on the 40 man. The only way for Fontenot to even be considered to be called up is 1) Cubs outright release Cedeno and put Fontenot on the 40 man and 2) The Cubs decide to go with 11 pitchers instead of 12. The combination of the 2 moves makes entirely too much sense for the Chicago Cubs to do, thus would never happen.

Comments by people on this blog are hilarious. Back and forth like waves tossed by a fickle wind. Win or lose let's at least be consistent of where we stand. Geez.

Cubs dig Solo Home Runs — May 12, 2007 @ 4:06 am Fontenot can’t be called up. He’s not even on the 40 man. =========================== SOLO HR: If the Cubs really wanted Fontenot, there are a whole bunch of ways he could be added to the 40-man roster. Wood or Mateo could be transferred to the 60-day DL, or Prior could be recalled from his optional assignment and placed on 60-day DL, or Wade Miller could be DFA'd. As for the 25-man roster, Lou Piniella wants to carry 12 pitchers, so Fontenot would have to replace one of the position players. Pagan just got recalled and is platooning with J. Jones in CF, so I doubt that Pagan is going anywhere. Blanco is the back-up catcher. Izturis has too much service time (5+115) to be sent to the minors without his permission, and he's making too much money for the Cubs to consider releasing him. Floyd and Murton are platooning in RF, but even if Murton was the everyday RF, Floyd is making too much money for the Cubs to consider releasing him, and as a Type XX FA, he can't be traded until June 16th. Ward has been hitting well enough that it's unlikely that he would get released, and as a Type XX FA, he can't be traded until June 16th. The more-likely scenario is that Fontenot's AAA hot streak catches gets the attention of at least one of the other 29 MLB clubs who previously had zero interest in him, and if that happens, the Cubs would probably be happy to trade Fontenot in a "Good Fella" courtesy deal, probably getting a similar-type lower-level (AA or A) position-player back in the trade.

Rosenthal opines on the Z stuff: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6798376 He says that letting him go would be a mistake and lists all of the major market teams being suitors for him. Honestly, I have my doubts whether Z could last a 5 year deal and if come July, he is still our 4th starter I wouldnt mind dealing to a AL contender if it can get us a SS, CF, and a 4th starter to replace him. This would be a 3 team trade. If were out of it come July he will be gone hopefully being LA bound because we can rake up the prospects. (of course knowing Hendry we would end up with Kelvim Escobar or Pierre)

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error?

Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.
