Game 37 Thread / Cubs @ Mets (2 of 4)

Game Chat Carlos Zambrano vs. John Maine Lineups:
Theriot 2B Reyes SS
Floyd RF Chavez LF
Soriano LF Beltran CF
Ramirez 3B Delgado 1B
Ward 1B Wright 3B
Barrett C Green RF
Jones CF Lo Duca C
Izturis SS Easley 2B
Zambrano P Maine P
No official word on DeRosa, Lee or Fontenot yet. In other news, I was right on both of my lineup guesses for tonight. The Mets made it easy by going with the same lineup from last night. UPDATENear the bottom of this thread, you'll see a note from Bruce Miles saying that Rocky Cherry has been demoted and Mike Fontenot has been called up. This seems to jive with my theory that DeRosa and Lee will both miss a few games but not enough to put them on the disabled list.

Comments

hmmm... I am not sure that this job sitting in front of a computer all day is going to too productive if I always comment this often... BUT... When Lee and DeRosa gets back, this is the lineup that I would LOVE to see: Theriot - SS Lee - 1b Soriano - LF A-Ram - 3b Jones - CF (against RHP) Floyd/Murton - RF Barrett - C DeRosa - 2b Pitcher Against LHP Pagan plays Center and bats 8th, moving everyone else up. Until Lee re-develops his homerun power, he is currently an ideal #2 hitter - high average, high OBP, doubles power, speed, etc. The only thing you wouldn't have him to that a typical #2 hitter does is bunt, but bunting is overrated anyway, and LouPa doesn't seem to bunt too often, at least early on.

Man. There's some lard on the right side of the field, that's for sure. So Floyd whines about playing time and then gets some. Fine with me as long as he puts up some numbers. I'd make a crack about his defense but I just keep replaying Murton's "close the glove before the ball arrives" trick. Jones waaaaaaay down in the line up.

Game doesn't start for an hour, but I'm going to go all Coach Wes here for a minute because I already know what I'll be saying in the home half of the third: Z, GET YOUR CONFARNED ELBOW UP, DAWG GONE IT. QUIT SCREWING AROUND WITH THAT SIDEARMING LOLLYGAG CRAP AND THROW LIKE A MAN.

I would have won the pot 7-5 odds that Floyd gets the start tonight. Squeaky wheel gets the greasin and Floyd aint afraid to squeak to Lou. I honestly think this is who Lou was refering to when he told Girardi that playing vets keeps the clubhouse happy.

Floyd's started one game in the last week.... and Maine's been a little walk happy vs the lefties the last 2 years.

I don't think Lou was referring to anybody specifically. That's just the status quo on most teams. Vets expect to play at every level from indy ball all the way up to the bigs. Rookies don't get to complain about not playing because they are rookies. Veterans earn the right to ask for more AB's because they're veterans. Not saying that's the right way or the wrong way to go about it. That's just how it works.

Looking forward to how Zambrano has accepted Lou's comments on his mechanics. I know they tryed to correct him back in 2001 in Iowa.

Oh, and I don't know if this was mentioned in the fontenot thread or not (that really escalated quickly, too much to sift through), but here's this blurb from cubs.com: "With Mark DeRosa undergoing an MRI on his hand, infield prospect Mike Fontenot is being called up to join the big-league club."

Wes -- yep. I believe it's his ring finger what's been bothering him. Thanks for the copy/paste, though.

the mouthpiece on Josh Hamilton... The Cubs had no intention of drafting anyone in the Rule 5 Draft, and they didn't trade Hamilton, they traded their pick to the Reds. The Cubs didn't know who the Reds would select until they handed a Chicago official a slip of paper with his name. The Reds took a gamble on Hamilton; they've even hired someone full-time to keep an eye on him. that doesn't jive with any other story I read about it....

Still pissed me off Rob. I don't care if we picked him with express interest of trading him or not, we DIRECTLY and PURPOSEFULLY helped out a division rival. I would have told them to stick it. Maybe another team would have selected him and the Red would never had gotten the chance. I don't understand why we would do this.

well first I don't buy that story from Carrie one bit... Second, you don't piss of other GM's unless it's worth it. A sketchy Rule V pick isn't worth it. Adam Dunn is worth it.

Arm angle considerably better in the first inning for Big Z. Started to move back towards 3/4's in the second and he threw a couple in the happy zone. Seems much more compact mechanically as a whole, which is something I know he was working on.

Saw the last 6 innings of the Iowa Cubs game today. They were sloppy early on defensively. They rallied to tie in the bottom of the ninth, but left the bases loaded then when Chris Walker made a Neifi-like bunt, which the Sacramento catcher picked up and walked back to the plate for the force, with the runner still about 35 feet up the line. Felix Pie snuffed a rally in the top of the tenth with a great throw from center to the plate, turning a sacrifice fly into an inning-ending DP. Whatever his hitting problems, he sure looks good in center field. Mike Kinkade hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the tenth to send us home happy.

wheeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a hit with runners in scoring position! and hi carlos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!1!!!111one1one!

all hail the salami a laugher now at 9-1. Come on Carlos, get some decent work in.

btw, i went to the game at shea last night.....was in traffic for the first two innings which basically means i saw the cubs lose 5-0, and no lee. blech. it was also damn cold and windy. going again tomorrow.....much more excited after this evening. the brewers got a gift out at the plate call on the phils in the bottom of the 8th, better not win by one.

Marshall has looked pretty good in Iowa. 2.16 era in just 16 innings but has been wild at times.

marshall's first two starts for iowa were solid; last one was a little wobbly...what's the consensus here on wade miller's future?

Although Wade Miller could well have a future with another MLB club desperate for a veteran rotation starter. It's called the Sidney Ponson Rule.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
