How do you top a 7-1 homestand and an 8-2 homestand? What about a 7-0 homestand? And let's not even think about that the Cubs would be going for the tenth straight win if it wasn't for those two unfortunate blown ninth-inning losses in Pittsburgh.
All this home-cooking might be needed, as the Cubs head out for a West Coast trip that will see them on the road for 23 of their next 32 games.
Today's lineup features Micah Hoffpauir in the three spot. I wonder what Lou had to do to get Derrek to take a game off?
Game notes fun after the jump...
- This is the first time since 1908 (see the parallel?) that the Cubs have entered June with the best record in baseabll.
- A win today and the Cubs would have their first back-to-back homestands with seven or more wins since 1984.
- The last time the Cubs started as well as 25-8 at home was 1977, the 1918 team was the last to go 26-8.
- The Cubs followed their 17-win April, with an 18-win May.
Sweep, Sweep, Sweep!!!

derrek lee is probably tied up in the clubhouse drugged and gagged.

Eh, the historically dreaded West Coast swing; what a crazy schedule the powers - that - be cooked up for the club this year, it's almost as if Wrigley was undergoing renovations this year. Oh well - sooner or later they've got to prove they can win consistently on the road, might as well be now.

Soriano displaying his solid defense again. Hope DeRosa is not hurt because of it.

he's also still hitting 1st even though there's better team options and his legs are hobbled, but what's new there?
hehe...

Dude, what does that even mean first of all? Second, he dropped a flyball that I could have caught - I have the right to comment on it. That play sucked balls, you know it, I know it, and Soriano knows it. I also don't think I've made enough similar comments to have to "give it a rest."

Dude i am saying SAVE IT. He's playing great and the Cubs are winning. When those two things stop happening the you can complain. But as long as the cubs keep winning, i don't care how many fly balls he drops.
get it?

he's hitting great...well, soriano-style great...
he's taken a step back with everything in the field but his throwing arm, though.
you gotta consider the full package, esp. if him being a DH isn't the issue being addressed.
btw, how about howry since may...think he's given up runs once and only had 1-2 "rough" outings. sweetness.

Then complain away you ingrate. I don't know what more you want. This team has the best record in baseball. Soriano is tied for the team lead in homers and is one behind in rbis. At this point who cares? So whine all you want. Some people will never be happy no matter what happens.

Christ dude. I did not say that I am not happy with the Cubs. I am quite happy. I am just not all that happy with an easy dropped flyball that almost resulted in an injury. I did nothing to deserve the attack. If it makes you feel like a bigger man or something then fine.
When I can't watch the game I often check in via Cub Reporter to see what is happening in the game. I like being able to do that. So when I am watching a game I try to do the same thing for others who might be checking. So I commented on the Soriano play. I don't really think it's a big deal. And I'm glad DeRosa is not hurt. If he had broken a finger on the play - whether the Cubs won or not - it would have been something to complain about.

Playing great? Not so sure about that.
He is hitting very well, and that is much appreciated. But he has looked bad on the base paths, and even worse defensively.
So overall I am not sure that you can say he is playing great.

I agree. He also got his contract for his legs and base stealing ability and because he looked as though he might improve in left field or even play center.
It's great that he's hitting, but I think most people are disappointed when he drops routine fly balls. It's not that hard to catch fly balls when you have access to a baseball field and someone to hit you fungoes every day.
I don't believe anyone said to release him or bench him, they just voiced their disappointment in the play. We'd like to see him get better and make the routine plays. I for one would also like to see his legs get healthy so he can go back to being a fairly effective base stealer. Of course, while he's hitting over .300 and knocking the ball out of the park, I'll still hope to see him in the game (especially since the bottom of our order is getting on base this year and Soriano has driven in over 30 runs). Then again, it was also nice to see Reed Johnson come in in the top of the 9th to play defense.

Before the season began, I was of the opinion that the Cubs should re-sign Prior for $1 million. I was wrong.

I'm right their with you. It's been hard to let go of 2003, and I held onto hope for Prior. This sort of injury/surgery history looks pretty bleak, though. Too bad. I never bought all the negative things said about his personality, though I suppose I had little reason to believe or disbelieve those rumors.

As much as I loathe Edmonds, if he can continue to contribute as he has this series, that'd fill the Cubs' only remaining hole, unless you count Marquis' shitty pitching as a "hole". Doubt the Cubs will be able to move him, though.

Gotta' love the Marquis hate.
You do know that Marquis has been better than Lilly this year, right?
Once again - Marquis is a very serviceable 5th starter. The Cubs could do a lot worse.
Re: Game 57 Thread / Rockies @ Cubs (4 of 4)
on Sun, 06/01/2008 - 9:08pm Permalink
I agree, but I can also see why people might look at Marquis's spot as a place where the Cubs could improve the ball club. If Gallagher pitches well, maybe Hill or Marshall come back from injury and can pitch better than Marquis, then the Cubs would have an improved rotation. Lilly seems to be improving, if you don't take his last start to heart. Then again, Gallagher could lose it and who knows what will happen with Hill and Marshall? As of right now, Marquis is helping the Cubs. Who would take his place, Hart, Veal, or Wells? None of those guys are gonna outpitch Marquis as of right now.

I wouldn't say we're lucky to have the grotesquely overpaid (Cubs owe him $10 mil next year) Jason Marquis. We're just stuck with him.
Lucky, is Sean Gallagher actually doing a fine job filling in for Super Flop, Rich Hill.

Who said anything about being lucky to have Marquis?
Re: Who said anything about being lucky to have Marquis?

Like I said, I wouldn't say that. No one in his right mind would.
Re: Who said anything about being lucky to have Marquis?
on Mon, 06/02/2008 - 1:59pm Permalink
And like I said... no one IS saying it, so I am not sure what the point it?
Marquis is what he is - a serviceable #5 starter who is going to take the ball every 5th game and pitch 5-6 innings. Sometimes those innings will be good, sometime they will be bad, and most of the time those innings will be mediocre.
And once again, I need to point out that Lilly continues to pitch worse than Marquis, or, at "best," just as badly.
Marquis really isn't a problem on this team.

Don't act so surprised. It is our sword duty to kvetch about the #5.
They could get the same kind of production
on Mon, 06/02/2008 - 12:09am Permalink
from Hart or Marshall at 400 K a year and have 6.6 mil to spend elsewhere.
Re: They could get the same kind of production
on Mon, 06/02/2008 - 9:07am Permalink
Marshall's hurt, Hart may or may not be as good as Marquis in a starting role. Hart has better stuff, but he's thrown a lot of pitches per inning in AAA and we have yet to see him start in the majors, which is always a different ballgame. That said, if they found a way to trade Marquis away without paying much of his 6.6 and Hill, Marshal, and Hart were all healthy and considered part of our available pitching depth, I'd be in favor of it (especially if there is some team out there that would like to give us a reliever or a prospect in return--but that would just be bonus).

"Soriano is tied for the team lead in homers and is one behind in rbis."
Pretty amazing considering the early season DL stint....
Lets just hope he is on one of his hot streaks come October.
