Game 66 Thread/Padres @ Cubs (#1 of 3)

Game Chat Ted Lilly (4-4, 3.96) v. David Wells (3-3, 4.76) After taking the Mariners two out of three, the Cubs have climbed to within five games of .500. It’s hardly the sort of accomplishment Cub fans dreamed of this past off-season, but still, it’s the first time the team has been this close to breakeven since May 28th. This will be Lilly's first start since umpire Jim Wolf read his mind, saw dark intentions and tossed him, just two outs into the bottom of the first inning in Atlanta. The Padres, who ended a season-high, four-game losing streak on Wednesday, lead the season series 3-2. The teams split a pair at Wrigley back in mid-April. On a personal note, I will attending today’s game in lower deck seats along the third-base line. I’ll be the middle-aged white guy seated with three other middle-aged white guys. See if you can spot me.

Hey..there he is!!!! Right next to the drunk guy in the "Cuck the Fardinals" shirt.

Did Barrett get doubled off? Game day showing Soriano flied out to center.

was lee's ball a homer? what happened? were there two different bleacher interference's today??

two bleacher interferences both hurting the cubs... I swear Len and Bob must be wondering what is it with the Cubs... because it's always something. We must have more interesting things happen than any other team in the major leagues.

Didn't somebody tell Fontenot about the new steroids policy?

One guy looked to deflect a possible home run from Lee giving him only a double the 2nd reached over the fence and prevented Floyd from catching the ball and letting the runner at 2nd from scoring. Floyd very easily couldve caught the ball

A statue is not enough- Wrigley PA announcer- "Welcome your 2007 Fontenot Cubs!!"

and a non-interference event (finally) letting the Fontenot HR land in the basket...and a nice one hop glove catch by the bleacherite. The problem is the other two boobs couldn't catch. Soriano's had no chance for the fans to screw it up.

Accoring to GameDay, Soriano's HR must have crashed clear through one building across Waveland and in through a window of the next building...

the first was near the indent of the wall and its pretty easy to reach there he got up on top of the bench and reached over for the floyd screw up

the DLee double had the fan reach quite a long way as the ball was right at the spot where the basket curves into the well area. One replay clearly showed his glove reaching over the basket when the ball made contact so it would have been a double...but it he had caught the ball it might have looked like a HR. the Floyd/A. Gonzalez play was more like the Bartman interference as the ball wasn't a HR but might have hit high off the wall if the fan didn't reach over the basket and deflect it. It was hard to see what the deflection did to the balls real course and quite possibly Floyd might have caught it. Fortunately, Gonzalez didn't score from 3rd. Still I think it might have been considered fan interference...interestingly that it looked like the security person took the fan away. He's probably been taken to the storage area from the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Packed in Box 422346.

"Theriot to Fontenot to Lee"... not quite as catchy as "Tinkers to Evers to Chance", but I'm enjoying it.

Re: Marcus Giles, from Yahoo! Box Score notes: SAN DIEGO SECOND BASEMAN MARCUS GILES WAS SCRATCHED FROM TODAY'S LINEUP WITH FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS.

On The Score the other day they kept callin Theriot and Fontenot "The French Connection"

the Floyd/A. Gonzalez play was more like the Bartman interference as the ball wasn’t a HR but might have hit high off the wall if the fan didn’t reach over the basket and deflect it. Bartman didn't interfere.

Players on the 40 can be recalled and be placed on the MLB Taxi Squad for one day, like for example if a club is unsure if a player might or might not be placed on the IL ("game time decision"). Like maybe Happ, for example.

Also, a player on the MLB Taxi Squad must be returned to his optional assignment the next day if he is not officially recalled to the 26-man roster.

The player is NOT paid at the MLB split rate and does NOT accrue MLB Service Time while he is on the Taxi Squad. Also, it is not considered to be an official recall / option back if he is not added to the 26-man roster.

Wesneski has not spent 15 days on optional assignment since he was optioned so he cannot be recalled unless he is replacing a player being placed on the IL or other MLB inactive list (Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical, et al), a player who is traded, or a player who is claimed off waivers.

excited to see more power in the lineup.

HOU going with 3 righty starters vs the cubs and their only lefty pen arm is hader.

unless busch has a mystery injury, we should see busch+mervis working all 3 games.

More than 50 years ago (I'm old), I was in the audience when my HS choir performed the whole thing. (It was a really elite choir and director.) That was my first exposure to the piece. You're right, Sonicwind75, there is a lot more to it than "O Fortuna," just like there's a lot more to Beethoven's Ninth than the Ode to Joy, etc. Much if it, as you say, is bawdy: "O! O! Totus florio! Iam amori virginali, totus ardeo!" Basically, "I'm really horny for these virgins!" And the guys in the choir adopted the "Skoal"- type greeting from the tavern scene: "Wafna!"

i would have pause if the cubs had a pitching squeeze.   as it is, they have more guys than they have roster.

    Maybe Brewer

He'd be able to leave the Cubs. He's out of options. That would open up a 40man spot.

I don't think Jed would do that.

  • crunch (view)

brewer has done nothing to keep him on the big league roster...imagine that's 1 guy gone.

yeah, it's only 2 appearances, but they were both unimpressive.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Yeah it is.....sorry......closers don't throw 89mph

It would be unique for sure.

But CP can't be HR susceptible

That's what Alzolay has right now and that's what Kyle has no matter the situation.

Supposedly Happ said on a radio show he's good to go

I hadn't read that anywhere from the usual accounts, so this could be off.

    If true, Canario goes down.

Hmmm. Maybe my idea of transitioning Hendricks into a closer role isn’t so crazy.
