The Cubs seek consecutive win number nine tonight versus the generally punchless Padres. While the Giants offense gets mocked for their futility, it's the Padres(3.66 R/G) and Nationals(3.74 R/G) currently battling for the bottom rung of the NL offensive ladder.

For the Cubs, not only does a win tonight extend their winning streak, it would also secure their first road series win since they swept the Pirates...their first road series of the year back in early April. And while their 11-13 road record is certainly unspectacular, there's only 3 NL teams with a .500 or better mark on the road (Marlins, Phillies and Cardinals). Another series sweep and the Cubs will join that group...

Marquis vs Ledezma tonight...I imagine good seat are still available.

Update: Reader Little Nate Lewis flagged this official Cubs press release announcing the demotion of Micah Hoffpauir, who went 8-for-19, .421 in 11 games, and the promotion of pitcher Kevin Hart from Iowa. Hart appeared in six games for the I-Cubs, all as a starter, going 1-1, 3.81, 33 K, 9 BB.

In 18 appearances with the Cubs dating back to last September, all in relief, Hart is 2-1, 3.33 .

I must admit that I am a bit embarrassed to be asking this, but what is the exact history and definition of "3/44?" I was working more than I would like and was not checking this glorious site as much as I should have been over the past 8 months or so.

Sorry if this is 3/44, but back when Schmidt was a free agent, there was interest at TCR in the offers he was getting. The Cubs' offer of 3 years, $44 million was repeated many times here by several individuals, to the point that a day or two would pass by and someone else would report it as news. Thus, "3/44" became synonymous with reporting info that was already known by most people here.

It's denotes a comment that has been made before (usually numerous times). The origin was back in November/December 2006 when Jason Schmidt was a free agent. There were rumors that Hendry had made an offer of "3/44" that about 10 different commenters posted. The first reference I can find to the contract offer was from commenter WPZ on 11/27/2006: "Here’s the quote Brian got from that SF article: “All has been quiet on Jason Schmidt’s potential return to San Francisco, and this might be why: According to one source, the Cubs have offered Schmidt a three-year deal worth $44 million.” For me that’s a no-brainer. I’d prefer two with a mutual option but in this market forget it … we’d have to go to $20 a year." The first repeat of this information came from Jacos on 11/28/2006: "George Offman on WSCR reports Cubs offer Jason Schmidt 3/44." I believe the first reference to 3/44 as a joke came on 11/28/2006 from Little Nate Lewis: "My sources are telling me we have made a 3 year offer to Schmidt…. somewhere around $44-$45 million dollars. This is very solid information….. if it comes true I will repost this to rub it in your faces." However, some others who re-posted the contract details may have been doing so as a joke as well.

I love that Cedeno is hitting better this year, but man the guy is an idiot on the basepaths. At least this time he slid through the base on an actual SB attempt instead of a walk.

That was one of the worst-pitched innings I have ever seen. The other team has one dangerous hitter, and Marquis walks 3 guys (including the pitcher and the leadoff man) to get to him. Bad, stupid or some combination -- Marquis continues to be a very over-priced #5-quality starter. Love to trade him, but who would want him? Come on, bats -- time to get going.

i am absolutely stunned that lou did not pinch hit for marquis there in the 5th. 1 out, 2nd and 3rd, looking for contact and hopefully more. why have a million pitchers on the roster if you're not going to pinch hit in that situation/?!?!?! marquis looks 100% awful. tying run at second and you've got marquis hitting lefty against a lefty (i realize that the bench guys are all lefties tonight other than blanco, but still....marquis against a righty maybe i could see) i'm stunned with lou....thought that was a fontenot spot for sure.

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
