Game Chat Rich Hill vs. Javier Vazquez

Comments

Good deals on tickets for todays game at the Sux website, "TicketExchange" I got mine for $41.

lol. If I didn't have to work today I would consider it even in spite of the rain!

If this game gets rained out, the only common off days both teams is August 13th and September 24 th. The game if not made up on a Sunday doubleheader (and MLB seems to be allergic to doubleheaders now of days) the most likely date is the 24th. It is a Monday and we will be coming off a weekend series Vs. Pit with a night game the next in Miami. They will coming back from Minnesota and play KC the next day. The 14th is unlikely because the Sux start a west coast swing the next day.

Couldn't help but notice that Tyler Colvin is now in AA with the Smokies. So far, that looks like a pretty good pick... I agree w/ VA Phil from the last thread on Epat. Not sure I see Fontenot as a major league shortstop, however. Would you trade big Z for Saltamachia? I would, but not sure the Braves would.

How about Izturis for Wily Mo Pena? Lugo is really struggling and I've read where (can't remember the source) Wily wants out.

Jones of Pagan today? Do we need to play jones to get him traded or do we hide him on the bench and hope someone sends us a reliever and a bag of baseballs while Pagan grows as a hitter?

Who (besides me) would have believed when the season began that MIKE FONTENOT would make IZTURIS expendable? But he's the reason (according to the Cubs) Izzy is on the block along with JJ right now. Fontenot's first 50 major league AB's vs his I-Cubs stats this year: I-Cubs .340 .385 .545 strikeout rate 14% Cubs .340 .358 .620 strikeout rate 16% Those minor league numbers sure translated purely to his major league debut.

Fontenot looks great up there and holding his own in the field as well. Between him and Pagan things are looking on the up and up no need for trading away talent for some washed up former talent. Someone mentioned earlier to trade Big Z for Salt. How do you replace a pitcher of Z's caliber and for the past couple years if it hasn't been for Z what do we have. You are crazy I believe in the comments of Stoney where he breaks the season into 3 parts and that is exactly what Pinella is got going on. HAVE FAITH YOUNG LADS!!!

We only trade Z if we think we're out of the race. I'd say the next two weeks will tell us alot, especially with Ramirez back.

Jerome- Very overcast, steady light rain right now. Would not be surprised if this turns into a night game.

Carmen- You will be missing lee for 5 games too. I wish he would start today, and come back against Brewers next week end.

In case you missed it, Michael Barrett's debut with the Padres: ...struck out three times, had a passed ball and let a wild pitch on a strikeout get by him that set up two Orioles runs in the eighth inning

colvin in AA? neat. that project is coming along nicely. ah...college hitters. good stuff. =p

Per yahoo stattracker: Soriano Fontenot Lee Ramirez Floyd DeRosa Bowen Pie Izturis

Oops, I mean Derosa....I guess I was trying to make him sound like a Ferrari! He was a late scratch from the lineup, Theriot is playing 3B today.

looks like the link for the Chat room got entered incorrectly, but I've fixed it, now. And remember, can always get into chat by using any one of the "Chat" links undernead the names of "The Authors" on the right of the screen.

Anyone have any idea what the "ugliness in the bleachers" was that the Trib was making reference to?

re:25 Maybe they were referring to the fisticuffs that broke out between the fans yesterday?

Yeah, Hill does look shaky. His FB is coming in at 89, according to the CSN gun. The Sox are whacking away pretty good.

Sure-handed Izzy with another spectacular play. That could end up wiping out his unusually good day at the plate (he has half of the team's hits to this point).

Excellent bunt by Theriot. Didn't square till the last second, to the right, bounced a couple steps then went dead. Exactly what you want to see there.

For being so overrated, that sure was an excellent bunt. Anyone know why Dempster didn't pitch the 9th?

Excellent bunt by Theriot I'd be interested to read Eli18's take on it.

"Anyone know why Dempster didn’t pitch the 9th?" According to Lou, "he tweaked his side (oblique)." "He'll be out a few days, and we knew this..." On CSN Post GAme

Dempster "tweaked" oblique. According to Lou at post game- "Howry will be closer for next couple of games." Derosa was "out of it" due to medicine he was taking. Ozzie"Put in papers tomorrow that Lou outmanaged Ozzie." No problem. Is there a more pompous non star ex-player in Chicago than "Felchin' " Bill Melton? Get the brooms out!!!

Ah! Found the Baker/Baylor stuff just now in the Gallagher/Ramirez thread. Nevermind.

This has been a very strange year all around. 0/2 Andruw Jones just broke through the .200 barrier. .198

Excellent bunt by Theriot I’d be interested to read Eli18’s take on it. >>i think it was a good bunt. hopefully he bats with men on 3rd and less than 2 outs every AB for the rest of the season...

Kerry Wood joined the Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field and was going to play catch, but that's it. Wood, rehabbing from tendinitis in his right shoulder, is on a conservative rehab program. "This kid is trying," Piniella said of Wood. "He's doing everything that's humanely possible to get him back on the playing field. Let's hope it works out for him. He's a good kid, he really is."

I just noticed that MLB.com's "XWL" (Expected won-loss record) "based on runs scored and runs allowed, using this formula: RS^1.82/((RS^1.82)+(RA^1.82))" has Milwaukee and Chicago tied for first in the NLC at 39-34. The next best is STL with 29-42. We're 8 or so games back but we 'should' be tied for first. Don't know if that makes me feel better or not, though... http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standings/index.jsp

*Correction* The next best is Cincinatti 34-40, Houston 33-41, Pittsburgh 30-43, THEN St. Louis 29-42.

...we also have the worst record in baseball in extra innings at 1-6. Maybe those are linked? We score a lot of runs, but not when the count?

I'm sure somewhere out there unknown to all of us is an X-dimension where the X-Cubs are actually tied for first in the XL-Central and the X-Cub Fans are posting happily on the X-Cub Reporter.

when is the the last time your lead off hitter has 14 homeruns and i think if i heard right 12 are solo blasts. then he doesnt do much for power rest of game. no wonder he wants to bat 1st he gets a bunch of fastballs later in the game he needs to adjust and has a hard time . i would like to subtract stats from first at bats in one hole then what are fonzies numbers?

"Theriovermatched" is the worst nickname for a player ever; sorry, Eli18. It's awful.

we also have the worst record in baseball in extra innings at 1-6. No doubt due to the fact (I posted the numbers earlier) that our offense disappears after the 8th inning.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?

Pro teams have to play their "big money" guys if they are healthy and not "locker room" issues.
The Cubs wanted to deal JHey off well before they bought him out. They just didn't want to pay him to play for someone else for that long. Jed did give him 20+mil to play for LAD last yr.
Jed might also let Kyle walk at some point this year. Similar scenario to JHey, except Jed thought Kyle was going to be good/solid in '24!!
You'd think Smyly is in the same book as well. Same with Neris (he's a 1yr vet RP, so he's not really in this convo too much).
That's ~35mil between those three and those three are going to get opportunities until at least late June) over younger guys even if their performance is "iffy".
But, Jed is going to play Taillon a lot. They have to try and justify that contract and hope a veteran works out.
So, Taillon, Imanaga, and Hendricks are locks for the rest of April and probably May.
Assad, Brown and Wicks handle the last spots until Steele is ready.
Now, you're question has real merit when Steele comes back. That will interesting if Brown is still good and Hendricks is still bad. But Taillon is entirely safe as long as he's healthy.

And the bullpen moves were "money" based as well. Smyly has actually been okay. But he hasn't been clearly better than Little. Little had one bad outing. But Smyly makes 9mil. If they needed another RHRP and one of Little and Smyly had to go, it was going to Little. But that doesn't mean Smyly is one of the best 13 arms for the team.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Childersb3: I think there was an issue with Luke Little coming into a game with men on base. He seems to need a "clean" inning to be dominant. So he is a future closer and needs to be used in that role at AAA. Same goes for Michael Arias. He needs to come into a "clean" inning, and is a future closer and needs to be used in that role at AA. Porter Hodge is a more versatile pitcher, a better version of Keegan Thompson (multi-inning RP). But Little, Arias, and Hodge (probably in that order) are the Cubs top three RP prospects (all three are Cubs Top 15 prospects).

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

So, let’s do a little war gaming. Taillon is back for tonight’s game. He pitched two rehab games, just a few innings each, and not especially sharp. Let’s face it, he hasn’t been lights out since the Cubs gave him the big contract. In other words, as flat out bad as Hendricks has been, the chances of Taillon being the savior don’t look exactly promising.

If Taillon is equally ineffective or perhaps even worse, what’s the next move? Winning teams can often find a way to work around a dud fifth starter - kinda. Two dud starters make things much more difficult.

I believe the biggest reason for the recent bullpen moves was dissatisfaction with the recent blowing of big leads and the recognition that the bullpen wasn’t all it was thought to be. In other words, they are exploring alternate options and configurations. If similar juggling becomes necessary (even more so than it already is), what kind of reasonable maneuvering do we think could be explored?

  • Childersb3 (view)

Cubdom needs to prepare themselves for Wicks to be sent to Iowa for Taillon to come up.
Ben Brown has 4 appearances. Wicks has 4 appearances.
Ben has 16.1 IP.  Wicks has 17 IP
Ben was a 1.1 WHIP.  Wicks has a 1.7 WHIP. Wicks does have significantly more SOs.
    Ben has been better, though.
I love Wicks. I think he's a fighter and his stuff has improved.
But, Jed isn't ditching Hendricks just yet. He should. But he won't.
Hendricks should go to the IL and Taillon-Imanaga-Assad-Wicks-Brown should be the rotation.
    Wont' happen though.
