When home/road splits collide!!!!

The Cubs are best in the senior circuit with a 26-8 mark and the Braves are the worst at 7-21, and will also be without the services of Chipper Jones and his .400-plus hitting for at least today's game, if not more. The Cubs will also look to extend their 8-game home winning streak.

A quick 3-game home jaunt before the Cubs head right back on the road to start inter-league play.

Cubs is pretty good. Really pretty good.

Manny..... are you still alive?

Lilly seemed to be cruising, What happened? He get in a Jam and need Marmol-ade to get him through it

I would so love the Cardinals to be featured on the cover of SI right now.

Pujols leaves the game tonight with a strained calf.

Moo!

No, no, no. A strained calf would sound more like:

MOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Great game except for Lilly's 1st and Howry's 8th. Derrek Lee showed some positive steps to maybe turning it around although I think Glavine was mostly throwing BP when he wasn't getting that same call he got in the 98 playoffs. I don't see why we can't sweep this series with Dempster and Zambrano going in the next 2. The Cubs offense has just been unreal at Wrigley.

And yes Pujols going down is big but something tells me these Cardinals are just one of those teams that are going to win even in the face of adversity. The Cubs/Cardinals head to head is going to be unbelievable.

I agree that Glavine was throwing BP. He wasn't fooling anyone. I would have been more surprised if D Lee hadn't hit a home run.

your ace and your stud hitter for at least couple of weeks (assuming the Pujols injury requires a DL stint as it most likely will from reading the early reports). We need to play some good baseball this month to really put us in a place where we do not need to overuse are main guys in the 2nd half.

they said Glavine left the game with an elbow strain and will miss his next start.

...he did throw 72 pitches (38 strikes) in 3 innings, so that's not bad for a 43 yr old.

Pujols calf injury. Details from the mlb site and a video of what happened. Reminiscent of Garciaparra in April 2005 although that was a severe adductor tear and this is a calf strain. Still it's eerie seeing him lying in a heap just a few steps down the first base line from home plate. More Voodoo dolls?

http://tinyurl.com/56prxl

lets say Pujols's calf strain is the most severe case of a calf strain, how much time would he miss?

Isn't adductor an oxymoron? Just saying

lets say Pujols's calf strain is the most severe case of a calf strain, how much time would he miss?
==================
cramp: 2-3 days, rxd with Midol. (www.midol.com)
mild strain: day to day until it's reinjured
moderate strain: 2-4 weeks
severe strain: 4-6 weeks
most severe strain in the history of baseball: 6-12 weeks
Soriano's calf: remainder of contract

LOL

Thanks Dr. Nick!!

Nice to see Lilly get a warning (and not thrown out) in the 1st - inning for that message pitch. I seem to recall a certain umpire showboating last year on Lilly during a game on ESPN. What a novel idea - it's about the players, not the umps.

I don't even know if that was a message pitch. It wasn't even that far inside, McCann was just standing practically on top of the plate. It could have been but I'm not convinced one way or the other.

  • Even from an on-field perspective, Torres is a 19-year-old beating up High-A pitching who also plays a great SS. Even if he never develops a legit MLB power stroke, he's still an obvious 4-tool guy with a very high floor. Sucks to trade away his next 6-8 years for a closer, albeit a great one.

  • "Like the Chapman deal for Cubs from on-field POV, wish I didn't now have to feel lousy following an otherwise likable Cubs team." @jonahkeri

pretty much sums up my feelings

  • You mean Yankees?

  • Cards lose!

  • You do have a point. The TheoJed certainly would need to address this in a transparent way. Milton Bradley was no help to the team.

  • FWIW, the Cubs would get a compensation draft pick between the 1st & 2nd rounds (around #35) if they extend a Qualifying Offer to Chapman post-2016 (probably about $17M), Chapman declines, and then he signs with another MLB club before next year's draft.

  • This all assumes Chapman doesn't want to be a free agent and possibly sign a $20MM+/year deal. We all know free agents get overpaid, sometimes dramatically (Hello, JayHey!). Not sure why Chapman would agree to the extension. If i'm is agent, I would tell him I could get I'm a $100M deal as a FA.

  • I'll root for the uniform and imagine it's left-handed Rod Beck or Randy Myers out there I suppose.

  • Amen to this. I guess it's gonna happen and I'm gonna have to suck it up but I really despise domestic abusers with every bone in my body and cannot stand them on any team I root for.

  • I just prefer they don't  acquire players that choke their wives/girlfriends.

  • So you'd rather go with Blown Save guy, when you can trade a prospect who is blocked for one piece that could get you over the top to the Big Dance? That is pretty old thinking. This is not a move that they cannot recover from if it goes south. But the upside is potentially historic.

The E-Man 8 hours 47 min ago view
  • I'd prefer it not happen too.

  • it's a hell of a blockbuster, but it's for a guy who pitches 1/3rd of a season at an extreme premium considering the guy being traded and if the early extension $$$ rumors are true.

it's one of those things that is bringing a guy at the top his game, but something is nagging me that this trade piece could have been put to better use.

a huge part of me is all "hell yeah, top of the line producer"...another part of me is "hmm, that for that?"

  • Still don't want. Kinda hope they can't work out the extension.

Charlie 9 hours 29 min ago view
  • obviously not, and I'm sure they did their homework...just hope they have some better answers than the Yankees

  • Chapman 12+ Career WAR. Currently 4.7:1 k-BB. With Rondon/Chapman/Strop/Nathan/Montgomery/Wood...Its the best pen I can recall other than Sutter or Lee Smith handling things themselves.

Its gonna suck if he gets injured, and it appears he's not the greatest of characters.

But, he'll have another Cuban to hang out with on the team.
