Gameday Open Thread / Giants @ Cubs

The Cubs stay home in Mesa to play the first of back-to-back games versus the Giants, Zambrano vs. Lowry today.

FWIW, thecubreporter.com does not redirect to here anymore. It seems to hang up at all-baseball.com .... I thought this site was down until I got wise and came to mvn.com directly.

Nice to see: With the Giants' shading their outfield toward right, Matt Murton doubling down the left field line. Troubling: Were those all-or-nothing tries by Soriano and Jones? the ones that led to a man standing on third..Or just inept outfielding? Troubling: The "wildpitch" by Z that led to a run. It was described as outside and low. Was this yet another case of Michael Barrett's inability to stop low and away pitches from getting past him or was it really a wildpitch?

yes, meaning really all-or-nothing hard plays...according to the radio guys, anyway.

FWIW, thecubreporter.com does not redirect to here anymore. It seems to hang up at all-baseball.com …. yeah, best not to use a 2-way redirect trying to get here... I think Ruz still owns the domain and I doubt he's updated it to go here.

Z...4 IP. 5 K's, 0 BB's....Bonds-less lineup that it may be

Has it become common place on this site for people to toss out predictions based on nothing? I'm not talking about things such as somebody saying "I think Murton may break out and hit 25 home runs this year." I'm talking about predicting major arm surgery in the next 6 weeks for Mark Prior. Or over the winter, a respected contributor writing that Cliff Floyd would sign with Baltimore. One of the best things about this sight has been thought-provoking questions and comments about the Cubs. There are too many other places where people who know very little about the game throw something against the wall without any source hoping it sticks. I hope this is just a very minority of people we shouldn't really pay any attention to.

I hope this is just a very minority of people we shouldn’t really pay any attention to. yeah pretty much...... in other news, Prior to start Wed. versus the Rockies in his final Cactus League game, should be fun telling him he's going to Iowa afterwards. "Dad" Prior is going to be pissed....

Boy, we're really gettin to Noah Lowry, eh? Ronny's earning that final roster spot. No complaints about Z, either.

all the starters (sans Z) has a hit now...bet pinella will take them out to chucky cheese's this weekend for sure now!

howry in...and a lotta changes in the field for the cub going into the top 8th. blanco catching, ward 1st..

'The “wildpitch” by Z that led to a run. It was described as outside and low. Was this yet another case of Michael Barrett’s inability to stop low and away pitches from getting past him or was it really a wildpitch? ' If it gets to him in the air within arm's reach it's a passed ball. Unless the announcers say something like 'Barrett really should have gotten that one', you probably shouldn't read too much into it.

It was scored as a wild pitch. They typically don't get those wrong. While a passed ball isn't technically an error, if the run scores on a passed ball, and the run would not have scored as the inning played out, it's an unearned run to the pitcher. They make sure they get those right since it affects ERA and stuff.

WES: The pitch in question was a slider that hit the dirt right at home plate, and Barrett tried to catch it on a short hop backhanded (he didn't move his body to try and block it), but it bounced off his glove and landed just a few feet behind home plate. Barrett retrieved the ball quickly as Zambrano covered home, but Barrett's throwed sailed over Z's head and the run scored. With a runner on third, Barrett MUST do a better job of blocking pitches like that. It was scored a Wild Pitch because it hit the dirt, but most MLB catchers would have shifted their feet, moved their bodies, fallen to their knees, and blocked the pitch, keeping it in front of them. But Barrett didn't do that.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
