More Roster Cuts

The Cubs cut four more from their spring training roster including uber-prospect Felix Pie. The other three were all non-roster invitees - Tomas Perez, Les Walrond and Koyie Hill. 31 players remain in camp with six more cuts needed to be made. I would guess.... To the DL: Kerry Wood (pesky shoulder) Mark Prior (they'll invent something so he can hang back in Arizona and get some work in) To the Minors: Rocky Cherry Buck Coats (has a knee injury as is) Angel Pagan Juan Mateo Prior might just get sent down to the minors as well.

Comments

They cut Pie?? I AM SHOCKED!!!#@^%#(*% /sarcasm Clearly they read my comment last night that Pie needed to go over to the minor league camp where he could "play every day" instead of sit on the bench. It will be interesting to see (1) where PIE PLAYS, CF or RF. RF being consistent with the conventional wisdom that he will replace Jones in right one of these days. (2) his spot in the batting order----leadoff or 2nd or somewhere else. Leadoff being consistent with nothing and 2nd being consistent with Piniella.

The last few cuts will be really interesting. I'm still not convinced we know who the 25th man will be. Any more news on trade action? Is Ronny really the guy? And man, that Iowa outfield is lookin' pretty crowded. How do you give ABs to Pie, Pagan, Coats, and possibly Moore, Patterson, Walker, Hoffpauir? Can they do like in softball and put a Short Fielder in?

When did Moore or Patterson become outfielders? I wouldn't be surprised if Pagan gets traded before Opening Day as is... if they all are around starting April 5th, I'd imagine an OF of Pagan in LF, Walker in CF, Pie in RF just because Walker has no business in RF. Whoever the Iowa manager is (I can't remember...is it Listach?) will have his work cut out for him getting AB's for these guys. Coats, Mcgehee, Hoffpauir are going to get moved around a lot.

And man, that Iowa outfield is lookin’ pretty crowded. And remember, PIE gets to play EVERY DAY or else. So that leaves only two outfield spots available.

When did Moore or Patterson become outfielders? They haven't, but being that they are both blocked in their positions, and especially considering Patterson's defensive struggles at second, it would make sense to get both of them some reps in the outfield.

Well E-pat's going to be even more blocked in the outfield and there's more innings at 2b for him right now. Versatility is good and Fox, E-Pat and Moore would do themselves some good working on other positions but they all need work on their own defensive positions as is. I don't think Derosa will be that big of an obstacle if E-Pat kicks the door down, but he wasn't all that great in AA last year and has to work on his defense. All nice guys to have in AAA though...

Fonz is on-pace to K more than 150 times this season. An interesting choice for a leadoff bat...

K's aren't much of an issue for a leadoff man since the only reason they're any different than a regular out is with people on base. I hope Soriano sees 3.9 pitches again this year.

If he stikes out that many times in a spot where he "feels comfortable", I would hate to see what he does lower in the order...

That pop-foul out is exactly why i would rather see Murton in the 2-hole instead of Jones....

I thought the part where strikeouts mean much for a hitter was put down years ago? Dunn, Howard, Bill Hall, Jason Bay, Grady Sizemore were all in the top 10 last year.

"SERGIO MITRE today, 5.0 IP 3 H 0 Runs Hasn’t allowed a run yet in ST." Boy oh Boy! So where do the Marlins sit in the Spring Training standings? Can they win it all? Last I am aware, ST stats are meaningless in the regular season.

Ryan Theriot with a butcher day in the field. TWO errors in the same inning. Leads to 3 fucking runs! Lou gives him shit in the dugout for not giving up a run in lieu of an out.

ROB G: You have Rocky Cherry Garcia getting sent down, but he is on the mound now (and doing a nice job). Are you sure? We could use him.

Ryan Theriot with a butcher day in the field. TWO errors in the same inning. Leads to 3 fucking runs! Wait a minute, didn't you just say ST numbers were meaningless?

Does it make more sense to keep Cherry in the bigs and send Guzman to the rotation at Iowa?

"Wait a minute, didn’t you just say ST numbers were meaningless?" Did I state his fielding percentage? Did I state the number of errors he has made in the spring? No. Did I infer, one way or the other that I thought he would be sent down, or win a gold glove (in Spring Training!) No. You, on the other hand, want to infer what a shithead Jim Hendry is/was for trading players to the Marlins and become All Stars - er - I mean really key team members like Nolasco, Mitre and Willis (whom this blog has adressed already several times when compared with the trade at the time that SHOULD HAVE gotten the Cubs to the World Series). THIS is the reason why you state Sergio Mitre's spring training era.

Isn't Prior scheduled to start on Wednesday? Will they still put him on the DL if he has a decent outing then?

Crunch -- thanks for the news. I also found this tidbit from an ESPN article. Emphasis added by me. "Walker said he accepted arbitration for the first time in his career because he wanted to stay with the Padres, the two-time NL West champions. He said he settled on his asking price so the Padres would have a tougher time trading him."

Lee has 11 2B in 55 AB in ST. That's .200 BA for doubles. Add his 2 HR to that and he's got a .236 avg for XBH. Not bad, ST or not. Why do you think they didn't pitch Dempster today in the bottom of the 9th in a 1-run game?

padres gonna pay him 1m to walk without playing than 4m to actually play him. evidently no one wanted to give up anything worth mentioning and/or take on 3-4m to pay walker. looks like he could be having a lesser payday than years past unless he signs an incentive deal or someone out there give him 1-2m to play 1st/2nd for them. he's getting older and his D isnt getting any smoother. had a rough spring with the bat, too.

How can they cut him (Todd Walker) without paying his full salary? This isn't the NFL - salaries are guaranteed. Am I missing something here?

Lee has 11 2B in 55 AB in ST. That’s .200 BA for doubles. Add his 2 HR to that and he’s got a .236 avg for XBH. Hey, can't you read?! ST stats are meaningless.

crunch: "evidently no one wanted to give up anything worth mentioning and/or take on 3-4m to pay walker." Jim Hendry could of told SD that. I would love to know what this guy does that makes him treated like the plague.

CWTP: I can read, and I did read the posts above. Thanks for your concern, though. That's why I wrote ( I can do that, too btw), "Not bad, ST or not". He is, after all, getting doubles in 20% of his AB's, and that's better than most. While you can continue to wonder about the literacy of TCR "readers", I'll take this as a promising sign that Lee's swing from 2005, with which he hit 50 doubles, is back. That's good news for all Cubs fans, whether they can read or not.

Who said anything was official about Prior being injured? You certainly didn't get that from my post if you read it. as far as I understand it, the Padres have to show that Walker is unfit to play to get away with only paying him a million. This should get interesting...

dave — March 26, 2007 @ 5:22 pm How can they cut him (Todd Walker) without paying his full salary? This isn’t the NFL - salaries are guaranteed. Am I missing something here? ========================= DAVE: For auto-renewal players and any player who receives a one-year contract as the result of an actual salary arbitration hearing and decision, if the player's club releases the player by the second Wednesday of March (March 14th in 2007), the club owes the player 1/6 of his salary (30 days pay). If the player's club releases the player by the Wednesday prior to Opening Day (March 28th this year), the player's club owes the player 1/4 of his salary (45 days pay). This is for auto-renewal (pre-arbitration) and players who received contracts via arbitration ONLY.

Rob G. — March 26, 2007 @ 6:30 pm as far as I understand it, the Padres have to show that Walker is unfit to play to get away with only paying him a million. This should get interesting… ============================= ROB G: The Padres just need to be able to show that another player or players are better fits for their particular team. The way the clause would be relevant is if some front-line pitcher or position player received a big arbitration award and then got released prior to Opening Day when it was obvious that the player was an integral part of the club. Also, you can't release an injured player. Neither of which applies to Todd Walker, who is hitting only .225 with one RBI in 42 PA this Spring. He clearly has failed to outplay his competition. So this one is a slam-dunk for SD.

Todd Walker wears out his welcome, yet again. That makes Minnesota, Colorado, Cincinnati, Boston, Chicago and now San Diego. His glove sucks, and apparently so too does his clubhouse ways. He should have known better than to take the Padres to arbitration. You watch. No other major league team will touch him. Ryan Theriot generally sucks defensively. He is on the Cub roster because of his offense. And Ronny Cedeno has made this ballclub because Sweet Lou justfiably doesn't like Theriot at shortstop or 3rd base. Still, Theriot has made a believer out of me. Hopefully he can play tolerable defense at 2nd and help in the outfield.

"Ryan Theriot generally sucks defensively. He is on the Cub roster because of his offense." wow. seriously, just wow. legend.

"And Ronny Cedeno has made this ballclub because Sweet Lou justfiably doesn’t like Theriot at shortstop or 3rd base." YOU dont like theriot at SS. YOU are not "Sweet Lou". i seriously question how you reach these conclusions.

Sounds like Kerry Wood will need major arm surgery. As in rotator cuff surgery. As in he tried to defer having surgery only for his arm to bite him in the ass once more. As in he is likely looking at an 18-24 month recovery period. AS IN, HIS CUB CAREER IS FINALLY AND MERCIFULLY FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES OVER. A very sad end to the most disappointing major league career I can ever recall in my 31 years of following Cub baseball.

I was right about Theriot's defense. Hence why the Cubs are going to carry another spare infielder. Theriot is not an option at shortstop, it is as simple as that. But don't fret, I have grown to like Theriot. He can and will help this ballclub, playing some 2nd base and some outfield and coming into games midstream.

"I was right about Theriot’s defense. Hence why the Cubs are going to carry another spare infielder. " again...this team has carried...and most every other team carries...more than 1 backup middle IF'r. this was not a mystery to most, its just not brought up constantly.

I was right about Theriot’s defense. Hence why the Cubs are going to carry another spare infielder. ------- again…this team has carried…and most every other team carries…more than 1 backup middle IF’r. ------ compare last yr's bench to this yr regarding middle infield: 06 starting SS: Cedeno 06 starting 2B: Walker (also backup 1B, ugh!) 06 backup SS: N Perez (also backup 2B, 3B) 06 backup 2B: F Bynum (also backup OF) 07 starting SS: Izturis 07 starting 2B: DeRosa (also backup 3B, OF) 07 backup SS: Cedeno (also backup 2B) 07 backup 2B: Theriot (also backup OF, 3B) Cedeno/Theriot (07) vs Neifi/Bynum (06)...don't say they needed more than one backup SS since Bynum at SS wasn't a consideration (unless you wanted to get a good bellylaugh). I'd say Cedeno is replacing Neifi's role and Theriot is replacing Bynum. It's a simple comparison and a solid upgrade for both roster spots.

theriot can also very adequately play SS, though some insist he wont be played there.

"theriot can also very adequately play SS" No he can't. Not unless we are talking about a local beer league team. Now stop yourself.

"Jim Hendry could of told SD that. I would love to know what this guy does that makes him treated like the plague." Manny, I doubt teams want a guy who is who isnt the best clubhouse guy in the world who is limited with the glove to 1st and 2nd and whose power potential maxes out at 20 HR.

ROB G: Where did you see the four you have stated under "To the Minors". The link you have supplied says nothing of the sort, and as I stated earlier, I saw Pagan and Cherry playing TODAY. Another link? I think you are mistaken.

read the post a little closer E-man.... those are my guesses on what the final 6 roster cuts will be.

Rob G, How the F is this Cubs team supposed to make the playoffs without Juan Mateo?!?!!!!

SILENT TOWEL: "But don’t fret, I have grown to like Theriot. He can and will help this ballclub, playing some 2nd base and some outfield and coming into games midstream." Oh, phew. I was really worried that ST didn't like Theriot for a minute. Thanks for putting my mind at ease.

CWTP: "SERGIO MITRE today, 5.0 IP 3 H 0 Runs Hasn’t allowed a run yet in ST." E-MAN: "You, on the other hand, want to infer what a shithead Jim Hendry is/was for trading players to the Marlins and become All Stars - er - I mean really key team members like Nolasco, Mitre and Willis...THIS is the reason why you state Sergio Mitre’s spring training era. " You know what, E-Man, CWTP said nothing that you accuse him of doing. I actually find it interesting to know that Mitre is pitching 5 scoreless innings of ST ball and not rotting through injuries or toiling at minor league camp, and I don't have time to peruse every box score or Marlins blog to find out this information. It doesn't mean I think Hendry is a shithead, or that I think it was wrong to trade him - it's simply interesting.

THIS statement is what my MITRE comments are based on - in case you did not read it. Perhaps you are in agreement with it as well, which I (and others) found limited in view based on the circumstances precluding: CWTP: "Last year with a staff that featured familiar names like Nolasco, Mitre, Wellemeyer, Pinto, Borowski and Willis, the Marlins posted the 5th best ERA in the NL while the Cubs were down at the bottom — 14th. I don’t care who the individual names are, the fact remains that this year the Marlins are going to start with a 5 man rotation featuring three young pitchers the Cubs developed. It’s almost like Hendry was the vice-president in charge of player development for the Marlins all those years he was being paid to do it for the Cubs."

i don't see that from CWTP anywhere on this thread, and even so, I still find it interesting to at least know what Mitre might be up to in Marlins camp.

The Cub Reporter (Rob G.):
To the DL... Mark Prior (they’ll invent something so he can hang back in Arizona and get some work in)
Rynox:
Fine, Pie isn’t all that good yet, imo. And it’s official Prior is injured?
Rob G.:
Who said anything was official about Prior being injured? You certainly didn’t get that from my post if you read it.
1. WTF? 2. Who pissed in your Wheaties? 3. DL stands for disabled list. I could be wrong, but it usually coincides with injuries. If your bit in the post were a jab at Prior or sarcasm, fine whatever, but don't get shitty when I ask "oh, Prior is injured?" Geesh.

yeah what Indiana JJ said Rynox, try to read the posts in their entirety, especially when they're about a paragraph long. Let's recap... 31 players remain in camp with six more cuts needed to be made. I would guess…. and that would of course be followed by 6 players and where I guess they'll end up before Opening Day. and if that wasn't enough of a hint, right after I mentioned Prior to the DL: (they’ll invent something so he can hang back in Arizona and get some work in) so yeah, it takes quite a bit of an effort to get Prior is injured from that post.

So, sometimes they use the DL for players who are not injured, and that's what you have predicted and what is now being reported. Gotcha. Sorry for being a jackass.

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

  • crunch (view)

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

  • Eric S (view)

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

  • crunch (view)

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.
