Rotoworld also said the Cubs were going with 12 pitchers, last evening. In any case, good for both of them, I hope they'll do well.

For what its worth, I think the handling of Prior is the single biggest difference in the Piniella era over Baker. The Cubs have forced Prior to be motivated. The first step in changing the culture. I have a friend here in Indianapolis that worked for Sam Zell. If he bought the Cubs, the news would be non-stop about this guy. This friend of mine is a chick and she has a picture of him grabbing her boob. According to her he's a horney little dude and doesn't care what he says to anyone... In my humble opinion, its a matter of time before the Cubs discard either Floyd or Ward. They just can't afford to have two guys who can't run or play defense on their bench. Too bad for Buck Coats. If he didn't get hurt he might have made the team. If Pagan hadn't hit .180 in ST he might have forced Lou's hand.

Can someone comment on all of the errors during yesterdays game in AZ? I know you can't take too much away from spring training as far as pitching and offense goes...but what about defense. I am extremely worried about our defense is the outfield this year

Ozzie and Sisco will go together like water and oil. That will be interesting to watch.

Cubs might not be satisfied with Cedeno- From today's Denver Post- "The Cubs are scouting Clint Barmes, but the Rockies want him to play every day in Colorado Springs for a while before re-evaluating his situation"

Barmes...that's hilarious. Last year: .220/.264/.335 Spring Training: .229/.282/.314 Career splits: Home:.284/.326/.427 Away:.223/.265/.338 Gee...he's an upgrade...I'll take the devil we know, thank you veery much.

Interesting news on Blanco, from the Sun-Times.
The Cubs are preparing for the likelihood of playing without a backup catcher for at least one game during the opening week of the season because of Henry Blanco's involvement in a federal trial in Key West, Fla.
{snip}
Blanco is not under suspicion for any illegal activity, but money used in the smuggling operation was laundered through Blanco's U.S. bank account, according to the indictment.
{snip} Click here for the full story.

Since testimony at a trial could extend beyond one day, the Cubs might feel the need to recall Geovany Soto from Iowa to temporarily replace Henry Blanco, and they also should be able to make room on the 25-man roster by placing Blanco on the Restricted List (used when a player leaves a club for "personal reasons" that aren't covered by FMLA) for the duration of his absence, however many days that might be.

christ...why does he have to be a witness anyway...cant they have his lawyer represent his interests? is he a possible witness in need of cross examination?

Did that second quote strike anyone else as odd? I have little to no faith in the media anyways, but it just didn't make sense to say that Blanco's not under any suspicion, but his bank account was used to launder money.

RYNOX: It could have been identity theft or a fraudulent use of his bank account number or credit card or SSN or something like that. The prosecutor probably would need him to testify to establish that it's his bank account, and that the account was used without his permission. The defense attorney would then probably try and implicate Blanco and put him on trial instead of his/her client, and then the prosecutor would have some redirect, etc, which is why it might take more than a day for Blanco to complete his testimony (there also could be some unexpected delays during his testimony).

"rocky point prostitution " If I had known about that I would have brought more money on my spring breaks 20 years ago.

AaronB- That is sarcasm...right? lol...

Just wanted to point out that the part Rynox skipped in the article mentioned that the case is against one of Blanco's agents, Gus Dominguez and says that Blanco's bank account was used in Dominguez's smuggling operations. It makes sense to say that Blanco wouldn't be under suspicion, as Dominguez would've had easy access to Blanco's bank account information as his agent. Not saying you reported wrong,. Rynox, just trying to clarify for people who haven't read the article.

Freudian slip: while reading the Blanco article, I accidentally misread "smuggling Cubfans into the United States."

"hatian culture and how they deal with pain" It's very possible that whoever ended up on TCR after googling this phrase suffered a quick death by head explosion. Which reminds me, where the heck did the Hatian Pain Threshold section of this website go? Was it moved?

"It could have been identity theft or a fraudulent use of his bank account number or credit card or SSN or something like that." AZPHIL: See #18 above. The case is a federal matter as Blanco's agent is accused of smuggling Cuban players into the U.S. It is hard enough to get cigars let alone a good pitcher.

THe Eman- Wasn't that a Seinfeld episode? Kramer asked Jerry to pick up a couple of Cubans?

I know some people yesterday were linking to some FireJoeMorgan.com tidbits but did anyone see the Dusty one? I caught some of the Mets-Braves game this afternoon which I believe was the ESPN debut of FJM favorite Dusty Baker along with Ric Sutcliffe and Dave Ryan. In the bottom of the first the three were discussing the Mets batting David Wright second in their batting order. Dusty says, "He (Wright) stole 20 bases last year so you don't have to worry about him clogging up the bases at the top of the order." For reference, first game, bottom of the first inning, first "clogging up the bases" quote from Dusty Baker. Hehe, ohh god I am glad this mental midget is gone from our team.

Sorry if this is a repost. ESPN has something called the Ultimate Standings: Fan Satisfaction Ranking. http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/sportsnation/franchiseRanks?sport=mlb&yea… It basically measures fan satisfaction with the team and how management treats the fans. Of the 30 MLB teams, the Cubs rank 29, ahead of only the Orioles. In other words, apparently Royals, DRays, Pirates, Marlins, Nats and other fans are more satisfied with their teams than Cubs fans. The survey includes all four N. American sports. The Cubs are 98 of 122. Amazingly, there's four franchises behind the Blackhawks - Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, New York Knicks and Minnesota Vikings.

"Weber is responsible for all the sculptures outside the stadium, and also has cast Thomas Jefferson and a few notable hunting dogs." Yeah, that's pretty much St Louis in a nutshell.

Actually the McGuire statue started out being small but then it ran into a Jose Canseco statue...

10 Man- LOL. If they did put it up, how many thousands of pictures would be taken of fans standing behind the statue pretending to inject it in the rear?

JACOS: "Wasn’t that a Seinfeld episode? Kramer asked Jerry to pick up a couple of Cubans?" One of the best ones. And, Kramer indeed shows up with them!

Dr. Transmission, love the urban cowboy/Jonny Lee reference in the title. Makes me want to beat my girlfriend and ride a mechanical bull.

* By reading this website, you agree that TCR and its authors hold no liability for any actions you might take afterwards. Actually, I think I just ripped of the title from one used at TCR from years ago.

#31...no I think they were actually Dominicans... they wound up rolling the cigars too tight.

Z told Levine today that the Cubs made him an official offer (no $/years divulged) and that "negotiations will continue through the weekend in Vegas" but "will cease when the season starts".

Except, as I pointed out by email to the author over at THT, Einstein's "miracle year" was 1905. It's unquestionably the greatest scientific year of his life, and only Newton in 1666 can match Einstein for "peak value" or career year. The Cubs still had TWO world series victories left in them, at that point! We don't suck QUITE as much as he suggests! ~grin~ (RTFA if this doesn't make sense.)

jacos:
From today’s Denver Post-
“The Cubs are scouting Clint Barmes, but the Rockies want him to play every day in Colorado Springs for a while before re-evaluating his situation”
*If* this is true, the only thing I can figure is he's being scouted as a possible future catcher. The middle infield is pretty well covered.

Barmes fits right in with our punch and judy Ss options. Aparently Dusty Baker still lives on in spirit in Jim Hendry's heart.

BOGEY: Z told Levine today that the Cubs made him an official offer (no $/years divulged) and that “negotiations will continue through the weekend in Vegas” but “will cease when the season starts”. Other details?

As Bruce Miles pointed out today, it's very possible that the sides agree on a deal before Monday's deadline but nothing is announced for a few days as they hammer out a few details. Just keep that in mind...

I really don't think there is much to worry about with Z's extension. Hendry has a great track record of bringing back the guys he has to and it seems like Z wants to come back. I don't have much confidence in Hendry, but I do in getting Z signed at some point.

"As Bruce Miles pointed out today, it’s very possible that the sides agree on a deal before Monday’s deadline but nothing is announced for a few days as they hammer out a few details. Just keep that in mind…" And let us not forget that nothing really happens the day the season starts. It's not like he becomes a free agent. It's a Zambrano imposed deadline, that's all. I'm sure if they are very close to terms, he not going to stop a deal just cause it turned midnight on Sunday. "I don’t have much confidence in Hendry, but I do in getting Z signed at some point." Manny, why? You may not like some of his moves, but in this situation, when has he let us down? We locked up DLee, then kept ARam then signed the biggest free agent this off season.

I am having heart palpitations over this. Maybe not as bad a A-Ram, b/c I knew Hendry would never spend the money. It shows just how much (lack of) faith I have in JH.

Clint Barmes sucks. He'd actually make me pine for Jose Macias or Freddy Bynum.

Chad: "Manny, why? You may not like some of his moves, but in this situation, when has he let us down? We locked up DLee, then kept ARam then signed the biggest free agent this off season." I don't think i was overly clear in my statement. I do have confidence in him to getting Z signed. I have little confidence in Hendry overall, but I do have confidence that the deal will get done with Z. In fact, I am really not worried at all. Sorry Chad for the confusion...

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?

  • Childersb3 (view)

Pro teams have to play their "big money" guys if they are healthy and not "locker room" issues.
The Cubs wanted to deal JHey off well before they bought him out. They just didn't want to pay him to play for someone else for that long. Jed did give him 20+mil to play for LAD last yr.
Jed might also let Kyle walk at some point this year. Similar scenario to JHey, except Jed thought Kyle was going to be good/solid in '24!!
You'd think Smyly is in the same book as well. Same with Neris (he's a 1yr vet RP, so he's not really in this convo too much).
That's ~35mil between those three and those three are going to get opportunities until at least late June) over younger guys even if their performance is "iffy".
But, Jed is going to play Taillon a lot. They have to try and justify that contract and hope a veteran works out.
So, Taillon, Imanaga, and Hendricks are locks for the rest of April and probably May.
Assad, Brown and Wicks handle the last spots until Steele is ready.
Now, you're question has real merit when Steele comes back. That will interesting if Brown is still good and Hendricks is still bad. But Taillon is entirely safe as long as he's healthy.

And the bullpen moves were "money" based as well. Smyly has actually been okay. But he hasn't been clearly better than Little. Little had one bad outing. But Smyly makes 9mil. If they needed another RHRP and one of Little and Smyly had to go, it was going to Little. But that doesn't mean Smyly is one of the best 13 arms for the team.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Childersb3: I think there was an issue with Luke Little coming into a game with men on base. He seems to need a "clean" inning to be dominant. So he is a future closer and needs to be used in that role at AAA. Same goes for Michael Arias. He needs to come into a "clean" inning, and is a future closer and needs to be used in that role at AA. Porter Hodge is a more versatile pitcher, a better version of Keegan Thompson (multi-inning RP). But Little, Arias, and Hodge (probably in that order) are the Cubs top three RP prospects (all three are Cubs Top 15 prospects).
