Gameday Open Thread / Diamondbacks @ Cubs

The last game at Hohokam Park for the year and Arizona Phil tells us that they're cutting it off after nine innings even if it's tied so everyone can pack up and head to Vegas for the weekend series versus the Mariners. Wade Miller goes for the Cubs against a split-squad DBacks crew led by Doug Davis on the mound.

Comments

I think I recognized 1 of the names among the D-Back starters today, other than the pitcher.

yeah, I'm stuck on Donnie Sadler and Montero their catcher who I never heard of until my last fantasy draft. Cubs lineup... Theriot, Jones, Murton, Ward, Derosa, Cedeno, Colvin, Reed, Miller Jones in CF, Ward at 1b, Colvin in RF, Derosa at 3b

Well, someone needs to back up Soriano if Theriot and DeRosa start against a left hander.

Rynox — March 29, 2007 @ 1:15 pm Little late for the Jones-in-CF experiments, isn’t it? ........................................................................... not after yesterday's display

I see it's still in beta-testing...Dbacks scored 2 and then jumped to JJ hitting.

CWTP: MLB.COM unveiled their 2007 version of GAMEDAY Thanks - it is a better interface and improved! Unfortunately the fielding is not for our Blue men. Says a throwing error on a sac bunt by DeRosa - leading runners to 2nd and 3rd - they came in to score on a double off Miller.

Yeah, it wouldn't have been an error probably if Lee was playing. DeRosa through it behind Sadler, and it came up with a nice hop, but Ward waved at it. Probably tougher than it looked because of the runner blocking his view. Should have been scored a hit and an error on the two runners advancing. 1 ER for the inning. Miller looks pretty bad today against the Tuscon Sidewinders.

Murton grounded into a double play?? Did they bench him for Cliff Floyd yet?

Thanks Real Neal for the "Eyewitness" rpt. I was just looking at the streaming feed at Gameday... No pic.

"everyone can pack up and head to Vegas for the weekend series " Yeah its a killer 35 minute flight to Vegas. Did the female ump screw up yet? ;-)

did the Cubs really swing at the first pitch the first four hitters as gameday says? and then derosa took 3 straight strikes?

No DeRosa went 0-2 then took 3 straight balls and tried to act like strike 3 was ball 4- though it was right across the middle of the plate at the top of the knees. Cedeno really looks good. Took a strike, missed a cutter, then took to pitches he would have swung at last year then drove a line drive double into the LF corner. Colvin fists a line drive to center to knock in Cedeno. I would advise Mr. Izturis to avoid the DL this year.

seriously, though...how do you find the gameday access point on mlb.com? ive seen separate games cut/paste to direct link, but i cant find a page for the feature on mlb.com

Here's something I didn't know. Musket updates the depthchart on the web page. She just compared TheRiot to Freel.

crunch, On the scoreboard page there is a gameday link over the Washihgton/Baltimore score.

female ump just moved from 1st base to 3rd base apparently she goes both ways. (i can't say i'm not ashamed of that)

I think the Gameday is just listing the number of pitches necessary for the at bat, so a K looks like three straight strikes, a BB looks like four straight balls, and a hit looks like first ball swinging.

Here’s something I didn’t know. Musket updates the depthchart on the web page. She just compared TheRiot to Freel. Yeah, one of her mailbags she mentioned updating the depth charts, explains why they're wrong so often. Theriot similar to Freel....what an original thought? Man, I've never seen that mentioned anywhere....sharp dame. Freel's got a bit more pop and patience though, imho....

Jones had a fairly tough at bat for his strikeout. Ward looked like he wondered what he was doing facing a left hander.

yeah, i was looking more of a cohesive link to the gameday. thought they used to have a homepage. now all i see is a blog and links beside selective game (not this one).

oh yeah, and i did find the link to today's game...just wondering if there's a central location and kinda wondering why this game is being gamecast, but not available to pick..

#25 Green Lantern No joke...I spit my water all over the frigging keyboard. EXCELLENT!!!!!

Little snip of a interview with Prior. He didn't seem too upset about getting set to Iowa. Not happy about it, but not irate. I wonder if they have one of those stair-steppers to get his calves back in shape.

Rammy's hot streak will die in the cold chicago air. I can't wait to see him wearing his hoody under his uniform

Hey, Murton finally got a real Game Day picture instead of that random side angle shot they used for two years!

They need to rub some icy-hot into his bat handles. He sure does bundle up, if it's 60 he dresses like an Eskimo on a seal hunt. Ward K's again. I guess Piniella wants to be really, really, really, really sure he can't hit lefties.

"Ward K’s again. I guess Piniella wants to be really, really, really, really sure he can’t hit lefties." ---- If he feels the Dusty Baker need to see things for himself, at least he is taking care of business BEFORE the seasons starts. Here's hoping he's seen enough and doesn't try this crap in the regular season.

"They need to rub some icy-hot into his bat handles. He sure does bundle up, if it’s 60 he dresses like an Eskimo on a seal hunt." ---- I can think of another place to rub icy hot if they really want to warm him all over... ...but I'm NOT volunteering for that job.

Let's hope that Soriano doesn't suffer from the same affliction as Ramirez... I don't want to see the same kind of production as last April/May...

Real Neal, No thanks! But I thought the "Eskimo on a seal hunt" description was not only vivid, but also hilarious. Guess some people just aren't built for the cold (just like some aren't built for the heat, right Dusty?). I was skiing last weekend in a t-shirt. My son came across a chick skiing in a bikini two weeks ago. Here's hopin' for a warm spring in Chicago so A-Ram can bloom early.

sweet, 77 degrees and sunny is the forecast for Monday in Cincy... W/Thurs drops to 52 though and then we're in Milwaukee

I don't need such a vivid description of what your son did to a woman skiing in a bikini. Thank you very much...

Soriano's career #'s don't really suggest a cold start as a problem, does taper off in Sept/Oct though. He does have a little better night numbers and said he's not much of a morning person...something to watch for in day games.

Jace, My son is 10...not quite at the age where that would do anything for him. I, on the other hand, was jealous. My wife saw the bikini skier as well and said she was cute. I love my wife!

Yeah, Rob, I saw the same thing about Soriano not being a morning person... Get the guy some greenies... achem... coffee!

Cowboy - Having two little kids, I can sympathize with not wanting to think about your kids having those kind of thoughts... Having a wife also makes your comment about loving your wife all the more funny... Thanks for that.

Prior makes a funny... "I'm not going to compete any less just because of where I'm at," he said. "I'll go down and help that team win, and try to make the Triple-A All-Star team and maybe I'll get invited to the Futures Game or something. I'm still 26." cubs.com story..

I was seriously planning to do a ramirez in eskimo gear photoshop for cubsfun. now i guess i need to credit you guys... :)

Cliff Floyd first player in ML history to watch his singles at the plate. Plesac just gave Cedeno his 'Most improved player of the Spring' award.

Rapada sighting! Gave up a bloop single to right vs some righthander he'll face in the PCL this year, then struck the next right hander out. Then he got a Dee Brown to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play on a 1-2 curvy thing.

Is lou even trying to get his 25-man roster out of there BEFORE the end of the game? Not many left at this point in the game...

I’ll get invited to the Futures Game ------- more likely he'll get invited to the Seniors game...

Anyone hear Leving reporting in this PM on the Z deal? He was supposed to be on after 4 CST.

cwtp:
I wish Lou would think long about maybe bringing CHERRY with him to Chicago.
Earlier in ST I just thought that was a knee-jerk reaction, because Cherry pitched well, but those sliders he was throwing today are just plain filthy. No doubt about it, it's a big-league slider. Maybe he'll have a middle-relief role before the year's over.

nothing other than Z was offered a 5 year deal...not really groundbreaking news though...that was expected.

Is Theriot officially our starting 2b? it appears so, with him getting the majority of ab's as of late. I'm guessing he splits time with De Rosa, while both get some starts at other positons......

De Rosa's value with Texas was as a swingman, I still don't see why the Cubs can't use him the same way. Platoon him with Jock in RF, that will give Theriot 40 starts right there at 2B. Add in the 10 games or so De Rosa can give Aramis a breather at 3B, and then the 20 games you sit De Rosa himself for a rest, and that adds up to Theriot starting nearly half the games; I like. Of course, considering Theriot is a natural SS, De Rosa can play it too, and Cedeno has been fantastic all spring, the REAL solution is to get rid of Izturis, but that ain't gonna happen, at least for now. Maybe some other team's SS will get hurt and we can trade them Izzy later.

77 - eric, ....i agree. i like the fact that Cedeno is making everyone think twice. the kid has a lot of pop and could really bring the thunder when he is seeing the ball well - notoriously, he's been very streaky. That being said, Izturis is a hell of a fielder - our staff will enjoy the 6-3 putouts, from all directions. i like your plan on Theriot and Derosa platoon / utility possibilities.

Hey look everybody !! Mark Prior mouths off and claims he is only an EMPLOYEE and is upset he isn't on the big league roster. As if I needed further reason to hate this selfish pussy of a douche bag. I hope Triple A hitters hit the living shit out of his 87 MPH heat and send his career back to the stone age. How dare this asshole lay into the Cub organization and Lou Piniella this way. Prior has stolen money from the Cubs since 2003. I'm livid.

Read tomorrow's edition of the Chicago Tribune. For a sneak peak, log onto chicagosports.com.

I know what story you're talking about, but as usual have no idea what your actually talking about. Is Prior supposed to be happy that he's being demoted? I sure hope not. He didn't lay into anybody. I'm glad he's pissed and I hope he goes out and strikes out 15 hitters every game to show the Cubs how pissed he is and then comes back up and wins 16 straight games for us. You prefer he sucks and the Cubs be worse off for it. I see you have those fan priorities lined up perfectly.

Call me a bum, but I hope like heck that Prior falls flat on his face while the Cub starting pitching staff performs admirably.

ST, why? So you can be right? You hope he does bad just so you can say you were right? That is so F'ed up.

Well Theriot has no chance defensive wise vs Freel, Freel has him beat at every position by a mile but Theriot might be a better hitter but Freel has him beat on the bases. Damm last June you could have hung Colvin, now it looks like alot of fair weathered people are starting to back him, how ironic!

I think that ST is that dollar store owner who sued Prior for not showing up to sign autographs. Slamdog, my memory is a little hazy, but weren't you one of those people slamming the Covlin pick, dawg?

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?

Pro teams have to play their "big money" guys if they are healthy and not "locker room" issues.
The Cubs wanted to deal JHey off well before they bought him out. They just didn't want to pay him to play for someone else for that long. Jed did give him 20+mil to play for LAD last yr.
Jed might also let Kyle walk at some point this year. Similar scenario to JHey, except Jed thought Kyle was going to be good/solid in '24!!
You'd think Smyly is in the same book as well. Same with Neris (he's a 1yr vet RP, so he's not really in this convo too much).
That's ~35mil between those three and those three are going to get opportunities until at least late June) over younger guys even if their performance is "iffy".
But, Jed is going to play Taillon a lot. They have to try and justify that contract and hope a veteran works out.
So, Taillon, Imanaga, and Hendricks are locks for the rest of April and probably May.
Assad, Brown and Wicks handle the last spots until Steele is ready.
Now, you're question has real merit when Steele comes back. That will interesting if Brown is still good and Hendricks is still bad. But Taillon is entirely safe as long as he's healthy.

And the bullpen moves were "money" based as well. Smyly has actually been okay. But he hasn't been clearly better than Little. Little had one bad outing. But Smyly makes 9mil. If they needed another RHRP and one of Little and Smyly had to go, it was going to Little. But that doesn't mean Smyly is one of the best 13 arms for the team.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Childersb3: I think there was an issue with Luke Little coming into a game with men on base. He seems to need a "clean" inning to be dominant. So he is a future closer and needs to be used in that role at AAA. Same goes for Michael Arias. He needs to come into a "clean" inning, and is a future closer and needs to be used in that role at AA. Porter Hodge is a more versatile pitcher, a better version of Keegan Thompson (multi-inning RP). But Little, Arias, and Hodge (probably in that order) are the Cubs top three RP prospects (all three are Cubs Top 15 prospects).

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

So, let’s do a little war gaming. Taillon is back for tonight’s game. He pitched two rehab games, just a few innings each, and not especially sharp. Let’s face it, he hasn’t been lights out since the Cubs gave him the big contract. In other words, as flat out bad as Hendricks has been, the chances of Taillon being the savior don’t look exactly promising.

If Taillon is equally ineffective or perhaps even worse, what’s the next move? Winning teams can often find a way to work around a dud fifth starter - kinda. Two dud starters make things much more difficult.

I believe the biggest reason for the recent bullpen moves was dissatisfaction with the recent blowing of big leads and the recognition that the bullpen wasn’t all it was thought to be. In other words, they are exploring alternate options and configurations. If similar juggling becomes necessary (even more so than it already is), what kind of reasonable maneuvering do we think could be explored?
