Minor League Rosters
Rule 5 Draft
Minor League Free-Agents

Your 2008 Boise Hawks!

A few more of the recently drafted players arrived at Fitch Park today, including catcher Luis Flores (7th round pick out of Oklahoma State) and OF Tony Campana (13th round pick out of U. of Cincinnati). Both were immediately assigned to Boise.

And speaking of Boise, the Boise Hawks roster was posted in the Fitch Park clubhouse today, with 27 players assigned.

The 27-man roster includes 13 players who were selected in last week's Rule 4 Draft, plus one non-drafted free-agent (NDFA) signed after the conclusion of the draft. The other 13 players on the roster played in the Cubs organization last year.

The Northwest League has a 30-man roster limit, so as many as three more players could be assigned to Boise before Opening Day next Tuesday (or anytime, actually).

The Hawks will be departing Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport for Boise tomorrow mornng at 7 AM, so the boys should be in fine shape for the Host Family Banquet in Boise, where each player will be paired with a "host family."

Here is the 2008 Boise Hawks roster (as of Friday 6/13):

While the Hawks are in Boise preparing for NWL Opening Day, 14 members of the AZL Cubs will be traveling to Cooperstown, NY, on Sunday, and the 14 will be available to play in the Cubs-Padres "Hall of Fame" Game at Abner Doubleday Field in Coooperstown on Monday.

The crew will then get a "VIP Tour" of the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum on Tuesday, before returning to Arizona on Wednesday to prepare for the AZL season that will commence next weekend.

Nice field trip for the kids, some of whom are only 17 years old.

Jim Hendry and Oneri Fleita could have plucked players from the Iowa, Tennessee, Daytona, and/or Peoria rosters for the HoF game, but they apparently decided they didn't want to cause any undo disruption to the clubs that are already in the midst of their regular season schedule (and Opening Day for the Boise Hawks is Tuesday, so diverting Boise players to Cooperstown would be inconvenient, too).

So for those of you who might watch the game on Monday, don't be too surprised if Junior (not Steve) Lake, Alvaro (not Sammy) Sosa, Kevin (not Geovany) Soto, Nelson (not Neifi) Perez, and Starlin (not Fidel) Castro get some PT in the later innings.

It's also POSSIBLE that 1B-OF Daryle Ward (rehabbing at Fitch Park while on the DL with a back injury) and/or RHP Angel Guzman (rehabbing at Fitch Park from 2007 TJS) could make the trip to Cooperstown, too, but that is still TBD.

Here is the current AZL Cubs roster (must be down to 35 players by AZL Opening Day):

AZL CUBS

* bats or throws left
# bats both

PITCHERS (18):
Francisco Acosta
* Jeffrey Antigua
Eric Allen
Israel Camacaro
Rogelio Carmona
Manolin DeLeon
Yohan Gonzalez
Chris Huseby
* Leon Johnson
Tarlandus Mitchell
Dionis Nunez

Julio Pena
Mike Perconte
Andres Quezada
Carlos Rojas
Jose Severino
Miguel Sierra
* Luke Sommer

CATCHERS (5):
* Matt Cerda
Robinson Chirinos
Jose Guevara (REHAB - broken hand)
Roberto Sabates
# Alvaro Sosa

INFIELDERS (9):
* Bryan Jost (1B)
Starlin Castro (2B-SS)
John Contreras (3B-1B)
Sean Hoorelbeke (1B)
Dwayne Kemp (2B-LF)
Junior Lake (SS-3B)
Jose Made (2B-SS)
George Matheus (SS)
* Jeffrey Rea (REHAB - quad strain)

OUTFIELDERS (6):
* Kurt Calvert
# David Macias
* Nelson Perez
# Cesar Salazar
Kevin Soto
TeWayne Willis

And there are several others who are spending their Spring (and possibly their Summer, too) rehabbing at Fitch Park....

FITCH PARK INFIRMARY (11):
Ryan Acosta, RHP (UNKNOWN)
Alberto Alburquerque, RHP (2008 shoulder surgery rehab)
* Jeff Culpepper, OF (shoulder surgery rehab)
Rafael Dolis, RHP (2007 TJS surgery rehab)
* Clark Hardman, OF (UNKNOWN)
Jim Henderson, RHP (sore arm)
Kitt Kopach, RHP (2007 shoulder surgery rehab)
Oswaldo Martinez, RHP (2007 TJS rehab)
Jon Nagel, RHP  (2008 draft pick - TJS rehab)
Cedric Redmond, RHP (torn labrum rehab - no surgery so far)
Larry Suarez, RHP (2008 TJS rehab)

Daryle Ward once again took batting practice this morning at Fitch Park, and he put on quite a power display,slamming several moon shots (or maybe I should say sun shots) onto 8th Street.

He said he feels a lot better than he did after yesterday's BP session (he felt some "jet lag" yesterday), and it certainly looks like he should be ready for a minor league rehab assignment very soon (that's if he doesn't go to Cooperstown as a chaperone with the AZL Cubs kids).

In Fitch Park roster news, RHP Jon Mueller has been promoted to Peoria, and the two Dominican RHPs who were demoted to the DSL Cubs in April after they got into an off-the-field fight (with each other) at EXST (the two being Francisco Acosta and Jose Severino) have been allowed to return to Fitch Park, and both pitched in today's intrasquad game.

Yes, believe it or not there actually was still ANOTHER intrasquad game today. The two squads were the Boise Hawks and the AZL Cubs, but mixed together.

Hers the abridged box score...

Great report, Phil!! Couple of loose ends. Where did Eric Allen, Manolin DeLeon and Mike Perconte come from? I don't recognize those names. Also, what happened to Dionis Nunez, Ryan Searle, Jeff Culpepper and Clark Hardman? I'm not spotting them anywhere. Did they join the lost socks?

Love all your reports, Phil! I know Eric Allen and Mike Perconte were signed as NDFAs. Think Ryan Searle went back to Australia for their Baseball Academy. Don't know about the others. I'll throw out a few other MIA names: Michael Christi, Brett Summers, Donny Walters, Bill Moss and Mark Sawyer. I think they all were released, but maybe Phil could confirm that.

ALEX & HOOK: The Cubs sent Ryan Searle back to the Australian Baseball Academy with LHP Cody Hams on May 22nd.

I neglected to list OFs Jeff Culpepper and Clark Hardman at the Fitch Park Infirmary, although I have fixed that.

I omitted RHP Dionis Nunez from the AZL Cubs roster (I fixed that, too).

RHP Manolin DeLeon (the co-closer for the DSL Cubs in 2007) got promoted from the Cubs Dominican Baseball Academy to EXST at Fitch Park just prior to the start of the DSL season.

Eric Allen (King College), Mike Perconte (Murray State), and Tommy Mejia (Dominican College) are the three NDFA RHPs signed by the Cubs (so far) after the Rule 4 Draft last week.

As far as the other players mentioned, Yale grad Marc Sawyer retired (he probably found he could make more than $5,000 per year working in the private sector), and the others were released.

Az PHIL - You made mention of your mid year top 10 cub prospects.....any chance you can point me in the right direction of that post or repost it for me as I'm always interested in your insights. It seems as though the top prospects (per BA) have struggled a bit this year.

AZ Phil - Would love for you to join us on the Boise Hawks preseason special on Monday to talk about what you have seen in extended spring training...if you are interested, email me at [email protected]... BTW - Mike Perconte's dad, Jack, is a former MLBer...I think he choked up on the bat (left-handed hitting second baseman) more than anyone in big league history

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

    ...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

    hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

    Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

    wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

    CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

    You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

    Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
