Anybody have a preference who the Reds pick to start the third game against the Cubs? Eric Milton and Kyle Lohse are both supposed to pitch tomorrow and then one of them will pitch next against the Cubs.

Levine said that Z and his agent met with Hendry both before and after the game yesterday in Vegas. While he didn't say a deal was "nearly sealed" he figures IF the deal does get done it will be tonight or tomorrow morning as the Cubs won't want Z having to hold a presser before the early start in Cincy on Mon. Looks for 5yr/$80-85 with a 6th year option with $3-5m buyout.

Cubs were also lowest in ERA in Cactus League and the best base stealing team at 30 out of 34. Looks like the Cubs will finish 7 in MLB this spring in walks and 3rd in BA. For a team that loves to strike out over the years they will finish as the 4 hardest team to strikeout. We also finished 2nd in HR's, and 3rd in RBI. What does it all mean? Not a whole lot, its spring training.

Buster Olney says 5/85 for Z. He speculates the Cubs "could announce a Zambrano extension on Opening Day (Monday) to create some positive vibes to start the season." That's from his Insider blog.

If we get Z in the fold that means we have, under contract for at least 4 seasons: DLee Z Aram Soriano I think this is an excellent core. If Prior can recapture what once was, this can be a dominant team.

This past winter I ask my brother-in-law, a die-hard Giants fan, if he was upset about losing Jason Schmidt. "Nope, I think he's done," was the answer I got. "He's losing his fastball." Turns out that's exactly right, according to the LA Times. "The Dodgers spent $47 million to lure Jason Schmidt to be their ace, a certified power arm. If you believe the Dodger Stadium radar gun -- and the reports from several National League teams that scouted Schmidt in Florida this spring -- they bought a pitcher with a below-average fastball. IS the Giants-Dodgers rivalry as heated as Cubs-Cards? Having lived in LA for a year of college, I just don't recall the City getting too excited about many things, except the Lakers.

Who replaces Soriano, in my list? Before 2004, Z is not on that list. You would really pin your hopes on a 38 year old Moises Alou? You would be looking forward to all the things that Sammy was going to do? We have Soriano at the peak of his career, ARam still on the up swing and DLee, still in his prime. Not even close to the same thing.

apparently they were and in that park, it's not like I don't think he'll be effective, but I doubt he'll be the ace they think they're getting... LA sports scene is pathetic, the Lakers and maybe USC football are the only things really followed with any sort of passion. It's just not part of the culture here like it is in Chicago or New York or Boston. When they're doing well, they get good crowds and all and even when they're doing poorly, but no one really cares if the teams are losing. Of course you wouldn't care either if you could go to the beach 200 days of the year.

Other than Kobe, what other sports "story" is there? There is no NFL football. Oh..wait...I forgot David Beckham is there. That is football, too. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim? As you know - they're in Orange freakin' County! I hope they lose the rights in Federal Court. That's like a team in Rockford Illinois calling themselves the Chicago Cubs. That is pathetic considering that Los Angeles has two of the most stories franchises in their respective league. And by that, I mean, the Clippers and The Avengers. Kidding.     Childersb3: I think there was an issue with Luke Little coming into a game with men on base. He seems to need a "clean" inning to be dominant. So he is a future closer and needs to be used in that role at AAA. Same goes for Michael Arias. He needs to come into a "clean" inning, and is a future closer and needs to be used in that role at AA. Porter Hodge is a more versatile pitcher, a better version of Keegan Thompson (multi-inning RP). But Little, Arias, and Hodge are the Cubs top three RP prospects (all three are Cubs Top 15 prospects).

    So, let’s do a little war gaming. Taillon is back for tonight’s game. He pitched two rehab games, just a few innings each, and not especially sharp. Let’s face it, he hasn’t been lights out since the Cubs gave him the big contract. In other words, as flat out bad as Hendricks has been, the chances of Taillon being the savior don’t look exactly promising.

    If Taillon is equally ineffective or perhaps even worse, what’s the next move? Winning teams can often find a way to work around a dud fifth starter - kinda. Two dud starters make things much more difficult.

    I believe the biggest reason for the recent bullpen moves was dissatisfaction with the recent blowing of big leads and the recognition that the bullpen wasn’t all it was thought to be. In other words, they are exploring alternate options and configurations. If similar juggling becomes necessary (even more so than it already is), what kind of reasonable maneuvering do we think could be explored?

    Cubdom needs to prepare themselves for Wicks to be sent to Iowa for Taillon to come up.
    Ben Brown has 4 appearances. Wicks has 4 appearances.
    Ben has 16.1 IP.  Wicks has 17 IP
    Ben was a 1.1 WHIP.  Wicks has a 1.7 WHIP. Wicks does have significantly more SOs. 
    Ben has been better, though.
    I love Wicks. I think he's a fighter and his stuff has improved.
    But, Jed isn't ditching Hendricks just yet. He should. But he won't.
    Hendricks should go to the IL and Taillon-Imanaga-Assad-Wicks-Brown should be the rotation.
    Wont' happen though.

    Did you agree with the demotion of Luke Little? He'd been pretty good up until the AZ/wild pitch appearance. I know that can't jettison Smyly (just yet) so they didn't need another LHRP. Especially with Leiter effectively being a LHRP. I still thought he deserved to stay. It's not permanent. He'll be back. Lots of moves to come with Taillon, Steele and other guys coming and going.

    Also, do you see Hodge being able to "control/command" his stuff to get a chance this year?
    Is Arias better than Hodge?   Thanks

    he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

    2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

    he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

    Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.
