Gameday Open Thread / Mariners @ Cubs

Fun game if you're watching today's game, see who's napping at the game or didn't even bother to show up from too much partying in Vegas. Marquis vs. Horacio Ramirez and then down with the NL starting on Monday.

Our opening day opponent, Cincinnati, is playing the Marlins today and the guy they were going to make their closer, Dustin Hermannson came into a 1-run game and gave up a 2B 2B 2B 1B BB 3 runs scored, nobody out Trip to the mound FC 1B Trip to the mound/ he's outathere!

Well this ought to be interesting.... Good luck Daryle. Soriano DH Theriot 4 Lee 3 Ramirez 5 Murton 7 Cedeno 6 Ward 9 Blanco 2 Chris Walker 8

Oh, and for them if you care... Ichiro 8 Beltre 5 Vidro DH Ibanez 7 Sexson 3 Broussard 9 Johjima 2 Betancourt 6 Jose Lopez 4

thanks cwtp, you made me feel that much better about me missing out on him in my fantasty league. :)

Who is the one individual on the 2007 Cubs that most concerns you? For me, it's Ryan Dempster. Maybe he won't have 9 losses, 9 blown saves and a 5 ERA again, but I don't necessarily think last year was a fluke. If he fails early, I'd hate to see relievers get taken out of their role or a mix-and-match 9th inning situation. I like Rocky Cherry but don't see the Cubs calling him up to close. I think a lot of this team's success depends on Dempster and that worries me.

Not sure oif this has been posted, but I just got my newest issue of Baseball America here at the ballpark and they have their 2007 minor league organizational rankings just released. According to BA, the Cubs continue their slide in minor league talent and are now in the bottom half of MLB at a 18 ranking. Their previous rankings: 2002 - 1 2003 - 3 2004 - 7 2005 -10 2006 - 15 2007 - 18 The only good news is that only CINC and MIL are ahead of us. BA did an analysis of how well each organization has done since 1995 getting players to the bigs. The Cubs ranked 4th worst in getting hitters to MLB and racking up PA's, but was #1 in getting pitchers up to big and getting innings. I don't think those stats will be any surprise to any Cubs fans.

This is funny, I am flipping through the channels and what movie is on? "Little Big League" And of course its the big game at the end. Who is managing the Mariners? LouPa. And the Unit comes in in relief in a one game playoff. Did this movie predict 95 or what?

Stop the predictions! The facts are in. The person who blew the most in the Vegas casinos and "gentelemen's clubs"...... Pat Hughes!! Congrats, Pat, on a job well done.

Those of you who watched the Bulls lose in O.T.: Ben Gordon is no LeBraun James He's a nice little player - but still ain't "The Man". I like their energy of the team (note use of "their"), but they still need a player. One and done in the playoffs, imo.

"Those of you who watched the Bulls lose in O.T.: Ben Gordon is no LeBraun James" And LeBraun James is no LeBron James. Not for nothing.

"didn’t even bother to show up from too much partying in Vegas." I would be interested in hearing the rationale how skipping a pre-season game would be worse than skipping the majority of the last game of the season, after your team has been eliminated. LeBron James is no LeBron James. Wake me up when he drops 63 on the champions to be, or makes the finals.

No walks, 10 K's for the Cubs staff in the ST finale, can't complain about that. Rapada finally woke up, hopefully he'll be dominate enough in AAA so that we can release Cotts or trade him for an A baller shortly.

actually Jeff Weaver wasn't traded. He just wasn't re-signed (by StL) as a free agent, in fact, he was one of the last free agent pitchers signed this offseason (until injuries lead the Orioles to sign Traschel)

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
