So .481 in rural Missouri is better than .771 in Jacksonville Florida? Every scouting report you read on him says that his hitting needs work... every single one. Why would you spend $6 million on a hitter when you're not sure he's going to be able to hit? Because he can cover a lot of ground in the outfield? You did find me out though, I do create the Baseball America draft issue, and when I put that Baez was the best high school hitter in the draft, I did that wearing my rose colored Cubs glasses, knowing that the Cubs were going to take him 4 weeks later. Starling can't hit...maybe he learns to, maybe he doesn't. That's a helluva a maybe to go after when it costs you that much money and another player. http://sbb.scout.com/2/1077285.html "his hit tool needs refining at the professional level" http://orioles-nation.com/2011/06/05/derek-bubba-starling-scouting-repo… "...he has little refined baseball skills...will have to be completely tutored with proper professional coaching" http://www.prodraftcentral.com/scouting-report-bubba-starling-gardner-e… " ...his hitting ability still needs some work and his swing could use some cleaning up"

    Bryce Harper still a jack-ass http://deadspin.com/5809414/bryce-harper-does-another-jerkass-bryce-har…

Doubt they would include League. No doubt they want to upgrade the bullpen for a playoff run though? Marmol would be a HUGE upgrade. Pena is probably a more productive offensive player down the stretch as well. Just depends on how much that regime wants to WIN NOW? Ichiro, King Felix and Erik Bedard aren't signed on out there forever? And that GM is surely feeling some pressure to win? Just logically seems like a team that would maybe overpay for deadline pieces? Especially after spending heavy last year and ending up in last place.

You mean late October with the Yankees? Sounds like he and Taylor Scott should switch seats at the training table.

Hmm...so League and Justin Smoak, vs. Marmol and Carlos Pena..... Would Seattle make that trade?

he was the big piece in Cliff Lee deal, doubt they care to move him.

I think Babe Ruth is the most credible and direct comparison for Vogelbach - he should be up to Wrigley by September

He was the key piece in the Cliff Lee deal and is the best hitter on their team. Maybe a three-way trade for Yadier Alonzo would make more sense.

5th rounder RHP Tayler Scott out of Notre Dame Prep in Arizona originally from South Africa http://rise.espn.go.com/baseball/articles/2011/05/09-tayler-scott.aspx

Doubt Smoak is held in that kind of regard? Figured a Marmol+Pena package could get it done?

BA's description of him is as a pitcher as well...I think the listing is incorrect. He played some IF as a freshman, but was drafted due to his performance as a relief pitcher this year.
  • The Real Neal 12 years 10 months ago (view)

Maybe instead of Smoak we should ask for Felix Hernandez?
  • Dr. aaron b 12 years 10 months ago (view)

And to expound on that: If we are indeed pairing payroll. Maybe see if we can use some of our bullpen assets to fill the corner infield voids? Ian Stewart would be a nice little buy low target in Colorado? Justin Smoak might be pried from Seattle? Especially if they stay in the race.
  • Dr. aaron b 12 years 10 months ago (view)

I think we should before that extension kicks in.
  • The Real Neal 12 years 10 months ago (view)

BA is listing him as 2nd basemen... I am assuming based on Phil's report that he got anounced as a pitcher?
  • SheffieldCornelia 12 years 10 months ago (view)

Hopefully they don't ruin his arm first by trying to convert him to starter. You'd think they'd learn a lesson from the Cashner debacle.
  • springs 12 years 10 months ago (view)

Maybe an indication we would be willing to trade Marmol at the right price?
  • The Real Neal 12 years 10 months ago (view)

http://mlbdraftguide.com/1/2011/05/30/tony-zych-draft-profile/ Sounds like a poor man's Cashner... it will be interesting to see how quickly the Cubs admit he's a reliever.
