Cubs 40-Man Roster

Roster Rules & Procedures

LAST UPDATED: 6-27-2016

Cubs MLB Reserve List ("40-Man Roster")

40 players (roster is full), plus four players are on 60-day DL

MLB Service Time goes by the format of Years+Days, meaning 2+155 is equal to 2 years plus 155 days.

Although an MLB regular season ("championship season") is actually 183 days in length, 172 days constitutes a full MLB regular season when calculating MLB Service Time, and a player cannot get credit for more than 172 days of MLB Service Time in any one season.

NOTE 1 - The Cubs have no players with Rule 5 restrictions on their MLB Reserve List (40-man roster).

NOTE 2 - The Cubs have no players with Draft Excluded Status on their MLB Reserve List (40-man roster).

NOTE 3 - Any player who has minor league options left and who has accrued at least five years of MLB Service Time (Trevor Cahill, Chris Coghlan, Dexter Fowler, Jason Heyward, John Lackey, Jon Lester, Miguel Montero, Clayton Richard, and Ben Zobrist, plus Jake Arrieta beginning on 4/29) and any international player with Article XIX-A contractual rights (Munenori Kawasaki? - TBD) has the right to refuse an Optional Assignment or elect free-agencv if optioned. Also, Optional Assignment Waivers must be secured before Jake Arrieta, Trevor Cahill, Chris Coghlan, Dexter Fowler, Justin Grimm, Jason Heyward, John Lackey, Jon Lester, Miguel Montero, Clayton Richard, Anthony Rizzo, Adam Warren, and Ben Zobrist can be optioned to the minors.
NOTE: Optional Assignment Waivers are revocable and so therefore the waiver request can be withdrawn if the player is claimed, so players are almost never claimed off Optional Assignment Waivers.

NOTE 4 - Munenori Kawasaki and Jorge Soler have each used three minor league options through the 2015 season, but both are eligible for a 4th minor league option in 2016.
NOTE: It is NOT necessary to secure Optional Assignment Waivers prior to sending a player to the minors using a 4th minor league option.

NOTE 5 - Any player who has accrued at least five years of MLB Service Time (Trevor Cahill, Chris Coghlan, Dexter Fowler, Jason Hammel, Jason Heyward, John Lackey, Jon Lester, Miguel Montero, Joe Nathan, Joel Peralta, Clayton Richard, David Ross, Travis Wood, and Ben Zobrist, plus Pedro Strop beginning on 4/18 and Jake Arrieta beginning on 4/29) and any international player with Article XIX-A contractual rights (Munenori Kawasaki? - TBD) has the right to refuse an Outright Assignment or elect free-agency if outrighted. Also, any player who has accrued at least three years of MLB Service Time (Anthony Rizzo, Hector Rondon, and Adam Warren, plus Justin Grimm beginning on 4/5), or who qualified as a "Super Two" player after the 2015 season has the right to elect free-agency if outrighted. In addition, any player who has been outrighted previously in his career (Gerardo Concepcion) has the right to elect free-agency if outrighted.

NOTE 6 - Starting at 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series, an unsigned MLB Rule 55-eligible player who is not a Rule 5 Player, does not have Draft Excluded Status, and/or is not eligible to elect free-agency if outrighted cannot be sent outright to the minors until Outright Assignment Waivers are secured and the player has either signed a Major League contract for the next season, had his previous season's contract unilaterally renewed by the club, or agrees (in advance) to sign a minor league contract for the next season (if the Outright Assignment is contemplated prior to a Major League contract being tendered).
NOTE: For any MLB player not eligible for salary arbitration, an MLB club can unilaterally renew the player's contract from the previous season (subject to the MLB minimum salary rule and the MLB maximum salary-reduction rule) if the player has not signed a contract by March 1st.

NOTE 7 - Most injured players can be sent outright to the minors only during a period of time beginning on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season up until reserve lists are filed in November. (An injured Rule 5 Player can be outrighted during this period only if Rule 5 restrictions have been removed, and an injured Draft Excluded Player can be outrighted during this period only if Outright Assignment Waivers are requested no later than 2 PM Eastern on the 4th day after the final game of the World Series). However, a player on an MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) who is not MLB Rule 55-eligible, who has accrued less than three years of MLB Service Time in his career, and who did not accrue any MLB Service Time during the previous season, was not selected in the immediately-preceding Rule 5 Draft, and has not previously been outrighted to the minors can be outrighted to the minors even if he is injured beginning on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season up until the 15th day prior to the start of the next MLB regular season, and an MLB Rule 55-eligible player who has accrued less than three years of MLB Service Time in his career, and who did not accrue any MLB Service Time during the previous season, was not selected in the immediately-preceding Rule 5 Draft, and has not previously been outrighted to the minors can be outrighted to the minors even if he is injured during this period only after the player has either signed a Major League contract for the next season, had his previous season's contract unilaterally renewed by the club, or agrees (in advance) to sign a minor league contract for the next season (if the Outright Assignment is contemplated prior to a Major League contract being tendered). Also, a Draft Excluded Player can be outrighted even if injured only during a five-day window beginning on the 20th day prior to the start of the MLB regular season and extending up until the 15th day prior to the start of the MLB regular season.

NOTE 8 - An Article XX-B MLB free-agent who signs a major league contract after 11:59 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the 2016 World Series will have an automatic "no trade" restriction through June 15, 2016. An Article XX-B MLB Free-Agent who receives a "no trade" right this way can waive the right, but if he does, his club can trade the player only for player contracts and/or cash with a maximum aggregate value of $50,000. Also, a player with an automatic ("10/5") or contractual "no trade" restriction (Jason Heyward, Jon Lester, and Ben Zobrist ) cannot be traded or placed on any type of irrevocable assignment waiver unless he agrees to waive his "no trade" right in advance.

  • Baez had Maddon's ass last night. I didn't hear the reason for taking Contreras out last night but whatever game management thingy it was, you don't take out your second hottest hitter. Or is he third? Anyway, you don't take him out. The guy can probably play anywhere in the field, anyway. Did anybody see that nice catch in left he made? I don't think he got a late start on that, just tracked it damn well for a catcher.

  • Per Fangraphs...

Bryant took over NL lead in WAR after yesterday's effort. 3.9. Rizzo's at 2.8 and 8th in the league. Rizzo actually with better offensive numbers (161 wRC+ versus 146 for Bryant), but Bryant gets a good bump because of defense and position(s) played.

    Fowler with a 2.8 WAR as well (9th), Zobrist with a 2.7 (14th).

    M. Carpenter leads NL with 163 wRC+ just ahead of Rizzo who is 2nd.

  • yes. I was at the Sean Marshall game in LF. Lou Piniella was managing. StL won 4-2, so I guess it didn't help but it was zany. Soriano/Reed Johnson and Marshall were the LF's.

On a 6 degrees of separation note: Cubs got Travis Wood in the trade that sent Sean Marshall to Cincy.

  • Can a pitcher get more than one hold in a game? Or a Win and a save?

  • Didn't they do this sort of thing with Sean Marshall years back? Sticking him in LF to save him to face others, but without a pitcher replacing him in LF.

i was a bit more confused why the guy who gave up a HR to votto last night was facing him with 2 men on.

...now that wood is coming in to pitch the following inning, the whole thing gets weirder. so like, okay.
