Monday Funnies: How many numbers are the Yanks gonna retire, anyway?

Hi.
Just, you know... waiting for baseball to start.
Didn't I draw some thumbs twiddling last year?
It's killin' me, this wait.

wow...he plays "better" at a heavier weight than when he slimmed down, but this is stupid. even b.colon thinks that's overkill of non-conditioning...well, maybe not...but pitchers aren't ballplayers...what?

I have some suggestions for the new commish that would make baseball more exciting! Let's switch to 9 offensive specialists and 9 defensive specialists. To improve the speed of the game, we could have a pinch runner leave from a designated line after the ball is hit. However, the defense would get one guy to tackle him. Let's add an offensive and defensive blocker. There we go, 11 men on each side, everyone a specialist, way more exciting. Well rounded athletes are so old fashioned anyways. Also, this playing everyday thing is boring. Day in, day out effort is so old fashioned. Wow, what if we only played one game a week, I bet that would really boost TV ratings! Who really wants to see anybody but true aces pitch anyway. Now let's add some attractive women on the sidelines, bada bing, bada boom, and transforming robot graphics in and out of commercials, yeah! Still, today's youth don't have an attention span for 6 month season, let's condense it down to 17 weeks. Now we can get those high dollar Ford truck commercials that sound really tough and shows a pick up towing a really bulky but relatively light object in a trailer up a rocky trail. Yep, that's the ticket.

In reply to by Ryno

Brilliant! How about this. After a 6 runs are scored, another specialist could put a ball on a tee at home plate and then see if he could hit it through what we could call a plate-post in center field. There would be a net behind it, maybe we could even sell adverting on the net. Bet All State might be in on that idea.

Prepare and execute playing of pre-game, in-game, situational and post game music selections. ugg...in-game...really...meh. hopefully this is just between inning time killing stuff for the in-game part. as someone who goes to a lot of minor league games, the constant stimulation thing can get a bit overbearing.

[ ]

In reply to by Rob G.

As a Recovering Cutler defender, that seems pretty reasonable to me. He's won, what? One playoff game in ten years? Something like that. Cutler is the poster child for those who argue that QBs with big arms can't match up with QBs with brains and who can see what's going on on the football field. I'm beginning to think Cutler is the Corey Patterson of football. No instincts for the game, just some great tools.

[ ]

In reply to by Old and Blue

no worries if they can rid themselves of Cutler, just no idea what the answer is. They can always go back to putitng together a great D and just get a no turnover QB and stale offense, but that's gonna have to be one helluva great D to beat the Packers or the NFC West the next few years. And John Fox didn't sign on to rebuild over 2-3 years.

"Cubs signed INF Ryan Dent to a minor league contract." you'll never guess who's farm system he used to play for...yeah. anyway, 25 year old flame-out who's got an outside shot at even being a MLB bench call-up.

looks like they spoiler'd this year's #1 pick

19. 2013: Jurickson Profar: We’re still waiting for his breakthrough, but he’s younger than 2015 No. 1 prospect Kris Bryant.

be the first Cub ever at #1

I counted 3 Cubs at #100, Nic Jackson, Christian Villanueva and Alcantara, well 2 and a half, Villanueva was a Ranger to start 2012.

[ ]

In reply to by Rob G.

Yeah saw that too. I think the Alcantara inclusion is a nice reality check for us Cubs fans. We like to think of these guys as monsters but Alcantara at #100 reminds you that just because he's intriguing doesn't mean he's gonna excel at MLB level. Though of course I hope he does.

Check out the italic white type on the top right hand corner: http://skyboxonsheffield.com/ For even more fun, check out the prices. I have zero sympathy for these businesses. Their entire reason for being was to be scavengers off another business. Parasites. They took the risk when they started this fiasco of a business that Wrigley could change, or the Cubs could change their minds about letting them do what they do. My apologies to those who foolishly invested in such a scheme. Next time I recommend going to another business school other than The Walter White School of Business and its curriculum of ponzi schemes, Nigerian email scams, and stadium neighborhood rooftop real estate.

[ ]

In reply to by Rob G.

There isn't a lot of ambiguity here:
6.6 The Cubs shall not erect windscreens or other barriers to obstruct the views of the Rooftops, provided however that temporary items such as banners, flags and decorations for special occasions, shall not be considered as having been erected to obstruct views of the Rooftops. Any expansion of Wrigley Field approved by governmental authorities shall not be a violation of this agreement, including this section.

[ ]

In reply to by Old and Blue

the lawyers in that article seem to think there's quite a bit ambiguity in that statement actually...

regardless, it'll get built, the rooftop owners may win their lawsuit after the fact and see a bunch of money, they may not. The Cubs buddied up to all of them pre-Ricketts and offered them all kinds of perks for a share of revenue. Then Ricketts came in and decided, nah, I can make more with jumbotrons and a few extra rows of bleachers. The richest cat in the room gets his way eventually.

'Merica!!!!

In reply to by Rob G.

Bernstein on WSCR reported yesterday that he had a source close to one of the Cubs attorneys who was in the judge's chambers during the TRO ruling. Supposedly she told the Rooftop's attorneys that they've had ample time to prepare for the reality of what is happening at Wrigley Field. There is no mystery here and not to expect and injunction to be issued. In othèr words, expect to lose this case.

[ ]

In reply to by Rob Richardson

yeah, pretty much...never thought they'd get their injunction, although that doesn't mean much about winning or losing the case. Judge would only rule injunction if there was overwhelming evidence. Rooftop owners just hope to get some money out of it at the end. It does seem the Cubs have offered to buy the buildings from all of them numerous times, not sure if they are fair offers and be a shame if they get demolished for parking.

Do miss the days when you'd see a few folks lug up some lawn chairs and a beer cooler...was part of the charm of Wrigley, now they're just extra luxury boxes essentially, with a shitty view of the game.

"pace of play" rules... http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12351883/major-league-baseball-announ… "The rules include mandating that managers stay in the dugout during replay challenges, hitters keep at least one foot in the batter's box during at-bats and a prompt return to play after TV commercial breaks, Fox Sports reported, citing unnamed sources." #1 is welcome if they want to have the challenge rule taken more seriously...well, a start. i don't have much of an option of #2 or #3, but it seems to be a minimal impact on players and gameplay...or at least a very small amount of players if they feel impacted.

Amazingly, the end of Profar's season may also be the end of his Rangers career. http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/texas-rangers/headlines/20150219-grant… If they really are going to non-tender him, it seems like someone would take a chance on his arbitration years as he's still so young and only getting ready to enter his typical major league years. I know Texas would like to obtain rotation depth and another catcher. The Cubs don't really need another might-be young middle infielder, but a lot of teams would pay a fair bounty to get Profar. I wonder if there could be a deal with Welington Castillo, Edwin Jackson, and cash going to Texas, Profar going to a third team, the third team sending a good-not-great prospect back to Texas, and a decent player or prospect going from the third team to the Cubs. It would seem to make sense for all three depending on the third team and the quality of the unnamed players.

[ ]

In reply to by John Beasley

Wow. Profar that is amazing! What a bummer. As far as Cubs Rangers, either they are tired of dealing with the Cubs, or they do well dealing with each other because they've done so quite a bit. My money is on the former. I think they've had it with us. But the 3rd team scenario could make it work!

In reply to by jacos

4.1 WAR for Wood since trade, 1.7 for Marshall...so sure.

The goal for Cubs in that trade was a longer term asset though they could flip or have for what is coming up the next 3-5 years. For Reds, was a lefty bullpen arm to get them in playoffs...which they did for two seasons, albeit only one in which Marshall really contributed. The key really is if Cubs can turn Wood into something useful for the next 3-5 years or if Wood himself is useful to Cubs.

Torreyes was given away to Astros, although I guess you can say it helped get Jimenez or Torres or even Montero since Mejia was signed with some of that international pool money they got in trade, but that takes a lot of conclusion and logic leaps to get there.

Say what we will about Edwin Jackson's performance the last two years, I really love his approach and attitude toward everything. He seems like a great teammate and human. Now, time to pitch well, please.

[ ]

In reply to by John Beasley

That's interesting - I'm rooting for him, too, but thought I was the only one. His attitude is pretty amazing - I think I read somewhere he even went on the Cubs Caravan and handled the hecklers with grace. It's so strange - he seems like he has good stuff and just gets clobbered. Maybe a little pitching framing will help. I do think, though, he'll have to impress early and often to have much of a chance. Cubs have about 20 starters.

[ ]

In reply to by Charlie

I can only say I had the misfortune to have my games always come up when EJax was pitching. Like 5 out of the 11 games I was at last year. Ask me if he won one? [don't ask - NONE] Same story in 2013. He is TOAST!. Time to move on, imo. There are better options even in the minors.

"I was batting about .350 after 150 at-bats," Woods told the Chicago Tribune in the September 11, 1986 article. "But they decided to put Keith (Moreland) in the outfield and they wanted to play Steve Henderson to see if they could trade him. I sat down and never got a chance to get back in." doh.

[ ]

In reply to by crunch

He exaggerated a little -- he was batting .338 with a .831 OPS on May 5, 1982 after 19 games played, with 68 at-bats (72 PA), playing complete games for about 3 weeks. Then he started entering games in the later innings for the most part for the rest of the year. He ended up getting into 117 games that year with 245 ABs (270 PA) and a .269 avg. Can't say he "never got a chance to get back in" but he really didn't get to have a regular spot in the lineup, day-in, day-out after that.

dodgers land b.beachy they gave him a 1yr deal (? money) and he's expected back in may at the earliest.

via rotowurld, via mark gonzalez on twitter... "Cubs manager Joe Maddon indicated Saturday that Hector Rondon would begin the season as the Cubs closer."

Oh, Jeff http://chicago.suntimes.com/commentary/7/71/387513/war-white-sox-samard… "Samardzija had a very good and very classical 2.99 earned-run average last season with the Cubs and Athletics. 'Listen, I can get (hitters) out without even throwing a pitch,’’ he said. “If I can intimidate them or maybe I’ve had success against them in the past, then sometimes these guys are out before they even get to the plate.'" Classical? Jeff, I agree you shouldn't throw a pitch at all.

[ ]

In reply to by jacos

I know we're suppose to dislike most ex-Cubs not named Mark DeRosa, but file me under someone who thinks Samardzija is going to have a great year.

His FIP numbers have been in low 3's the last 3 years and easily pops 200+ innings, gets any kind of run support and he'll be racking up wins, not that most front offices even seem to care about that anymore. He's been gunning for his big contract the last few seasons, I'll be very surprised if he doesn't have a great season.

just glad Dodgers didn't get him...

H. Olivera still out there.

MLB Trade Rumors round-up claims Dodgers are going in heavy on all July 2nd eligible prospects.

Wonder what Eloy Jimenez and G. Torres would get now. Seems all teams have decided this is their last few chances to be able to outspend for amateur talent. And kudos once again to TheJedi for realizing this before most other teams did.

it begins... "Tsuyoshi Wada (hamstring) will resume throwing bullpen sessions later this week." speaking of potential bad trade news...this time re: welly... "Dioner Navarro acknowledged Monday that he asked for a trade "right away" after the Blue Jays signed catcher Russell Martin to a five-year, $82.5 million contract."

Maddon: "The best teacher in this game is nine innings of baseball." Renteria: "The best teacher in this game is 6.1 innings of baseball every third day except for holidays and bat mitzvahs."

And just like that baseball season started Jay Zawaski ‏@JayZawaski670 9m9 minutes ago Kane and Rose hurt on the same night. God hates Chicago. Official.

In reply to by jacos

I'd love to hear the good doctor's take on this because the trib report says the recuperation time from just cutting out the bad stuff is way shorter, and that's what they'll do here. Sounds like their gamble on not doing that first didn't pay off, but I can see why they took it. I don't see Rose throwing in the towel on his career, and the Bulls? Well, they're stuck with two $20million+ years so they're kind of hosed.

[ ]

In reply to by Old and Blue

baseball players come back from torn meniscus's in like a month, but obviously a lot diffferent for a basketball player. I think I recall Todd Walker in 2005 had that happen to him, but don't know the difference of the severity of the injuries.

Bad knees for a basketball players is pretty much a death sentence...truly unfortunate. Bulls had a legit chance at making Finals if Rose was Rose.

[ ]

In reply to by Rob G.

Not that at it matters, because I think Rose is done, and it is most definitely a bummer, but I think Westbrook recently had a similar surgery. But D Rose has been fighting bad knees pretty much now his entire Bulls career. Just makes me appreciate the wonder that was MJ even more, playing above so many others (no pun intended) and avoiding injury pretty much, too.

[ ]

In reply to by Old and Blue

Sorry, was in the OR all day. Not sure what the latest word is on DRose (haven't heard sports talk since this am) but if he tore his medial meniscus again it's unlikely that it's a peripheral rim bucket handle tear which is what they repaired in the first surgery. If the arthroscopy is just to clean out a segment of torn meniscus, then the recovery should be not more than 6 weeks and could be 2+ weeks sooner. If there is articular cartilage damage (focal arthritis) then it might be a bit longer or more complicated recovery. Ted Lilly as I recall had a shoulder problem and they scoped his knee while he was out for his shoulder issues. The knee was better in a month. http://www.thecubreporter.com/2009/07/25/ted-lilly-chronicles-knee-bone…

D-Rose can buy plenty of Aleeve...Celebrex....etc with the money he'll have made. Get the meniscus partially removed, and get healthy sir.

In reply to by Dusty Baylor

Derrick Rose is like a bad round of golf. You double-bogey the first, and you think "That's OK, it's not a disaster." Then, you play OK for a few holes, then dump two in the water and make a triple bogey. "Aw, hell...well, if I can keep it together the rest of the way...". Then, after a few OK holes, you hit one OB make make another big number. "That's it -- this thing is over."

[ ]

In reply to by billybucks

I have not seen an analogy like this before. Certainly unique. In DRose's case, he started out like Tiger in his prime, and ending like John Daly, minus the alcoholism. Just a trainwreck. I personally like him and feel really bad for him. Listening to ESPN radio today they had former NFL player - and now ortho surgeon (ever meet him CUBSTER?) - Mark Adickes on. Very interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Adickes He was certainly much more optimistic on the recovery options (making some assumptions) should Rose decide on shorter-term "clean-out" of stitches/tissue yielding a return of possibly "3 to 4 weeks...". Even still - this team as constructed now with no point guard - is done and will need a re-build.

[ ]

In reply to by The E-Man

What kind of got on my nerves was D Rose getting criticized for taking it "slow". For one thing, at that level, these guys never take it slow. All it takes is trying to imagine competing at the NBA level - or any major sports league, and that kind of thinking is just ludicrous. So I hope he somehow finds a way to come back strong for the playoffs just to shut those people up.

Cubs 2012 6th round draft pick RHP Trey Lang has retired.

Lang set HR records as a slugging OF at Skyline HS in Mesa, before enrolling at Northern Illinois University. But he returned home to Mesa after his freshman season at NIU,

Now 22, the 6'3 225+ Lang was drafted by the Cubs out of Gateway CC in Phoenix, where he had been a "two-way" player (RHRP-OF). He was used as a closer at GCC, and was planning to transfer to the U,. of New Mexico if he had not signed with the Cubs.

No question Lang threw hard (mid-90's fastball), but he was unable to develop his secondary stuff, and he also had major command issues. He was held-back at Extended Spring Training in both 2013 and 2014, and he probably would have had a tough time making the South Bend staff in 2015.

2012-14 (AZL Cubs & Boise) - 5.65 ERA - 1.56 WHIP - .257 OppBA
76.1 IP, 74 H, 56 R (48 ER), 45 BB, 71 K, 4 HR, 5 HBP, 32 WP - 44 GAMES (7 GS)

2013 EXST: 5.51 ERA - 1.71 WHIP - .253 OppBA
32.2 IP, 33 H, 21 R (20 ER), 23 BB, 25 K, 4 HBP, 9 WP, 1 GIDP, 2 PO, 56% strikes, 38/23 GO/FO - 11 GAMES (7 GS) - ERRORS: 1

2014 EXST: 7.91 ERA - 2.43 WHIP - .304 OppBA
19.1 IP, 24 H, 18 R (17 ER), 23 BB, 20 K, 2 HBP, 8 WP, 4 GIDP, 21/14 GO/FO, 51% strikes, 18.4 PITCHES-PER-INNING - 13 GAMES).

I always thought that if he was unable to make it as a pitcher that he might try outfield again, but apparently he decided to just change careers instead.

Lang is the second 2012 Cubs draft pick to retire, following INF Tim Saunders last year. The speedy & athletic Saunders retired after failing to come back 100% from 2013 TJS, but he has expresed a desire to return to baseball in 2015, so if he does, he'll have to hope he can win a "super-sub" utility job at either South Bend, Myrtle Beach, or Tennessee.

J. Hamilton meeting with MLB, facing disclipinary action...Rosenthal: Asked executive if Hamilton’s discipline was for PEDs. His response: “Worse.” The executive declined to elaborate.

Real shame if it's a relapse

in the sidebar, but Olt/LaStella took grounders at 3B today, Alcantara/Baez at 2B...I'm sure it'll be different tomorrow.

Fowler hit a HR of Edwin in live batting practice, think Edwin K'd Rizzo though. Arrieta, Motte, Grimm, Doubront and Turner also threw.

Kane out 12 weeks most likely...see you next year!

They're hoping Rose's surgery is actually pretty minor and could be back for playoffs, if not sooner.

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/28791/cubs-notes-some-pi…

“If you have a pitcher that you believe is going to go deep into the game you normally want him ninth to delay the decision to pinch hit for him,” Maddon said Saturday at spring training. “If you have a pitcher that has a history of going five, possibly six innings, you may want to hit him eighth, possibly to pinch hit for him sooner rather than later.” There are other factors that go into the decision as well, like if there is a “really attractive No. 9 hitter” that can bleed into the top of the lineup. “Then your No. 4 hitter might move up to No. 3,” Maddon said. “These are the things I think about.” Maddon indicated it’s a safe bet that a pitcher like Jon Lester will bat ninth.

Also Lester being Opening Day starter a mere formality at this point...

yup, I'm favoriting Jesse Rogers horribly-angled-from-3-miles-away BP footage in the twitter sidebar....enjoy.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.
