Best Cubs Rookie Start Ever?

by CubsfaninCA

To say that Kris Bryant was highly hyped when he came up is an understatement. I can’t remember any Cubs prospect that fans were more excited to see get to the majors in all my years as a fan. He’s through 70 games now and after his big 4th of July padded his stats a bit, I was curious to see how his start compares to other notable Cubs in their rookie year.

So here’s Bryant compared to 14 others in their first full season. I threw out any “cups of coffee” partial seasons and focused on their first 70 games when they went full-time.  Leaders in each category are highlighted and Bryant’s rank out of the 15 is at the very bottom:

Beeler Be the 26th Man?

With Donn Roach getting the start for the Iowa Cubs today, it would appear likely that Dallas Beeler will get the call-up to be the "26th man" and start one of the games of the day-night doubleheader for the Cubs versus the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Beeler last started for Iowa against Round Rock in Des Moines last Tuesday and Roach last pitched a week ago yesterday for the Cubs in St. Louis, so unless the Cubs intend to start Edwin Jackson or Travis Wood on Tuesday, the choice was probably between Beeler and Roach.

Here is the how the "26th Man" rule works....

Rondon Makes Cub Debut & Cease Fires No Hit Stuff for AZL Cubs

RHP Luis Jimenez hurled five innings of shutout ball with nine strikeouts and combined with two relievers to toss a two-hit shutout, as the AZL Indians whitewashed the AZL Cubs 5-0 in Arizona League game action Saturday (5:30 PM local start time) at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

AZL Cubs Relentless Attack too Much for A's

Robert Garcia (two singles, a double, and a home run) reached base four times, scored three runs, and drove-in three more, Wladimir Galindo and Joey Martarano collected three hits a piece and drove-in three runs between them (Martarano with a sharply-hit opposite-field RBI ground single to right through the 3.5 hole in the top of the 1st inning to get things started, and Galindo with a line-drive two-run single drilled to center to cap a five-run 3rd), and 13 of the first 15 Cubs batters reached base (although two were thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double and another was CS), helping the AZL Cubs take an 8-4 lead through three innings en route to a 10-4 victory over the AZL Athletics in Arizona League action last night at Fitch Park Field #4 in Mesa, AZ.

Trey McNutt Takes Mound in Game for First Time in Two Years

Miguel Mercedes slugged a two-run triple in the top of the 1st inning and Robert Mullen smacked a two-run triple in the 6th, Rangel Ravelo singled, doubled, reached base on an HBP, and scored two runs, and Brett Siddall drilled a two-run double to cap a five-run 8th, as the AZL Athletics rallied to defeat the AZL Cubs 9-6 in Arizona League action Thursday night at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

  • 8 in a row to end the year...let's do this playoffs thing.

  • shelby miller (ATL) finishes the season with a win, snapping his 24-game winless streak...because ATL bats are non-existent.

    3.02 era, 1.25 whip, 205.1ip, 171K

    6-17 w/l...ugg.

  • Totally independent of the Cubs winning or losing today, Dan Haren came into today's game having earned $2M of his potential $3M in performance bonuses for 2015.

By making the start (his 32nd start of the season) he picked up $500K, and he'll get the remaining $500K if he can throw at least 8.2 IP in the game (he was at 181.1 IP coming into the game, and he needs to reach 190 IP to get the remaining $500K),

It's a bit like the old "Bowling for Dollars" TV show, but of course Haren is actually "Pitching for Dollars."

  • holy crap, MIL is just...awful.

  • i think he's currently playing for the Santo Domingo Meths. he's an Adderall-Star player there.

  • I'm longing for a Neifi sighting.

  • if you have stable/fast internet you can stream with and you don't mind giving up $20 a month check out "sling tv".

TBS, TNT, ESPN 1+2, etc...100% legal.

  • 68 pitches (50 strikes)

love seeing that...especially with the batters doing very little with it.

  • Yeah, keep him off the playoff roster.

  • Or, he's looked exactly like Ted Williams.

  • Lately he hasn't looked like Ted Williams...

  • Reading between the lines on some of his comments he seems to know his longish swing doesn't play well with a man on third and two outs, and two strikes on him. I doubt a playoff adjustment is happening, just something he'll need to figure out next year. I have this odd feeling he will.

Bryant leads NL rookies in HRs (26), RBIs (99), 2B (31) and runs (86). Last rookie to reach 26 HR, 99 RBI, 31 2bs, 86 runs and 74 BBs?

    Boston’s Ted Williams in 1939

  • Surprised and bummed that Mark Buehrle is retiring. One of my all-time favorite pitchers. I think he could pitch for 5 more years.

  • Probably going to a bar/restaurant with TBS. Cord-cutting is so over-rated.
