The game was pre-planned as a seven-inning affair.

In EXST Cubs roster news, RHP Bailey Reid has been moved up to Hi-A South Bend.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Pimental Throws Goose Eggs at Cubs

SP Yoscar Pimental fired five innings of shutout ball, SS Jose Fernandez singled twice, scored a run, drove-in another, and collected eight assists including two "highlight-reel" defensive plays to help turn two double plays, Gary Mattis Jr belted an opposite-field solo HR, and Marco Pernalete drilled a two-run single, as the Diamondbacks Black squad defeated the Cubs 5-1 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Friday afternoon on Field #6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Cubs Edge Giants in Extended Spring Training Opener at Papago Park

Ezequiel Pagan laced an opposite-field RBI double off the LF fence in the 1st inning and an RBI single in the 3rd, Geuri Lubo drilled three singles, scored two runs, and drove-in another, Adan Sanchez singled twice and drove-in a run, and Jefferson Rojas ripped an RBI double and drew a walk, as the Cubs edged the Giants 7-6 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training Opening Day action Monday afternoon at the San Francisco Giants Papago Park Complex in Phoenix, AZ.

Adan Sanchez and Raino Coran Rock & Roll at Riverview

Adan Sanchez drilled a two-run double in the 1st inning, singled in the 3rd, and ripped a game tying two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the 5th, and then Raino Coran followed the Sanchez game-tying two-run double with a game-winning walk-off two run HR onto the south bank of the Loop 202 freeway, as the EXST Cubs Red squad blew a 4-1 lead in the top of the 5th only to rally for four runs in the bottom of the 5th and defeat the EXST Cubs Blue squad 8-6 in Extended Spring Training intrasquad game action Saturday morning on Field #6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.&nbs

Kyle Hendricks Goes "Live" at Extended Spring Training

It wasn't a conventional game or even a "sim" game, but Kyle Hendricks faced hitters for the first time since last July.

The "live" BP took place Friday morning on Field #6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

As is usually the case with "live" BP, an actual umpire was hired by the Cubs to call balls & strikes.

Hendricks faced three batters -- Raino Coran, Wally Soto, and Brayan Altuve -- and each of them batted twice. They did not run the bases and there were no fielders.

Seiya Suzuki Thrashes a Brandon Hughes Offering at Sloan Park

Seiya Suzuki blasted a solo HR (off Brandon Hughes) over the LF bullpen and onto the berm, Ismael Mena drilled an RBI triple (also off Brandon Hughes), Yidel Diaz belted a two-run double, and SP Jackson Ferris hurled three innings of no run / no hit ball with four strikeouts (three swinging), in an Extended Spring Training intrasquad game played at Sloan Park Wednesday morning.

The game ended in a 3-3 tie.

Seiya is the DH, but Raino Brings the Lumber

Raino Coran slugged a two-run HR in the 1st inning, doubled in the 4th, and singled and scored in the 6th, Ismael Mena smacked a two-run triple and scored a run in the 6th, and SP Daniel Palencia hurled three innings of shutout ball, leading the EXST Cubs Blue Squad to a 7-5 victory over the EXST Cubs Red Squad, in Extended Spring Training intrasquad game action Tuesday morning on Field #6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

per Tribune: Suzuki MRI results pending from yesterday so we should get a timetable for return later today.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.
