Former Cubs Players

Ol' Times with Ronny Cedeno / Game #78 Preview

I watched the game intermittently last night, and one of my tune-ins happened in the top of the 7th. The Cubs were leading 3-1 but Pedro Alvarez had connected for a one-out single and then Ryan Doumit ripped a 3-1 pitch into the leftfield corner for a double that moved Alvarez to third. The visitors had the tying runs on base with just one out and roughly 100 pitches into the evening, Ted Lilly looked like he might be out of gas. Len Kasper surmised that this was probably the game's defining moment.

Then Ronny Cedeno stepped into the batter's box.

Ex-Cub Watch

A quick tour of some of the Cubs that have been recently vanquished by Jim Hendry and the Hendry-nots

Michael Wuertz -  He entered today with 7 scoreless innings, no walks and 9 K's plus a win and a hold. He was called upon today in a tie game with a runner on versus the Yanks and the runner got caught stealing but Wuertz's scoreless streak came to an end with back-to-back doubles followed by back-to-back singles to give the Yanks a two-run lead which the A's subsequently erased to get Wuertz off the hook for the loss.

Felix Pie - Playing left fied mostly for the Orioles with a few stints in center...he's sporting a 135/220/216 line so far with a a home run and 11 K's versus 4 BB's in 42 PA's.

Rich Hill -  Expected to begin a rehab assignment later this week that should last the full 30 days.

Luis Montanez - Just got called up by the Orioles to replace the DL'd Ryan Freel. Montanez had a 29-game streak of reaching base in the minors dating back to last year and an OPS at 1.000 so far this season. He went 1-for-5 with a double and a strikeout in his first game back.

Looking In On Corey Patterson

Former Cub Corey Patterson has come a long way, and not in the direction any player wants to see his career go.

Since the Cubs traded Patterson to Baltimore in January, 2006, he's had seasons of .276 and .269, with OPS+ numbers of 94 and 80, OBPs of .314 and .304, and a combined 159 strikeouts and 42 walks.

  • Yeah, she's a good egg. The whole superdelegate thing is shady as fuck though.

  • the perks of being a big fundraiser model representative citizen.

honestly, though...the dnc could do worse and she's involved in all kinds of dem party stuff.

  • I didn't realize Laura Ricketts is a superdelegate.

  • pretty much...also agree that it wouldn't surprise me to see him land with the cubs, too.

the trade to free up room for him would be interesting.

it would help if he didn't play such a mixed-bag CF. he's anything but sure out there with his wacky routes.

the O's are favored because of links for weeks and they're about to land y.gallardo (giving up that draft pick).

  • holy crap...j.mejia got busted AGAIN for PEDs.

    3rd time...lifetime ban.

at one point he was the "closer of the future" (and the actual closer) for the mets. 26 years old. unreal.

  • I agree with what you said, but isn't it so weird that the White Sox are not linked to Fowler? They seem like an ideal fit.

  • oddly...or not...fowler's been strongly linked to the O's lately.

  • Olmos takes another 40 man roster Roulette bullet. The new lefty will be gone when Fowler comes back.

  • seen him in the minors...rather boring lefty. really slow secondary stuff (very slow slider) and a fastball that barely hits 90 on a good day.

  • The Cubs have claimed C.J. Riefenhauser LHP on waivers from the Orioles. Edgar Olmos was again DFA.

  • They should have someone standing behind him to take the ball out of his glove when he's looking for a sign from the catcher, and throw to first. I vote for Baez. That way he can cover the rest of the infield, too.

  • but then d.ross wouldn't have someone to pitch around him or IBB him to put him on base...it's almost moot...almost...not really...but almost...kinda...

just checked...7 IBB last year...hard to tell how many times he was pitched around, but even assuming it's 0 that brings his ob% to below .230 with a sub-.500 OPS.

  • the intro to the all-star game would take an hour longer just to announce the team...awesome.

  • Think how much more valuable Lester contract looks if he doesn't ever have to do that mockery of hitting thing he does!

  • TV schedule is out:

It's irritating that it's so difficult to watch Cub games.

  • The NL should just go ahead and out-DH the AL.
