Game Previews

The Cubs activated Kerry Wood before the game and put Carlos Zambrano on the disabled list. With the All-Star Break looming, Z may only miss one start. In the meantime, Wood sat on the bench while Wells gave up the game tying home run in the 7th and then the lead.

Oh Q-Ball, you're nothing if not consistently wrong...

Join the fun in Parachat if you're going to be tuned in to watch Stephen Strasburg's debut and stay for the Cubs game that starts an hour later or if you want to talk about the Blackhawks game(which doesn't happen until tomorrow).

Aramis is out of the lineup and is getting his hand checked out again according to Wittenmyer who hints a DL trip could be looming. With Chad Tracy having another 4-hit day down in Iowa, might not be a bad time for a couple weeks off.

The original lineup had Tyler Colvin sitting against Gallardo but Lou had a change of heart and is sitting Soriano instead. I give up trying to make sense of it.

Theriot, Fukudome, Lee, Colvin, Byrd, Fontenot, Hill, Castro, Lilly

vs.

Weeks, Gomez, Fielder, Braun, McGehee, Hart, Escobar, Kottaras, Gallardo

Theriot, 2B #Victorino, CF
Castro, SS Polanco, 3B
Lee, 1B *Utley, 2B
Ramirez, 3B *Howard, 1B
Byrd, CF Werth, RF
Soriano, LF #Rollins, SS
Baker, RF *Ibanez, LF
Soto, C Ruiz, C
*Gorzelanny, P *Moyer, P

Jeff Baker gets an odd start in right field against the lefty Jamie Moyer. No word yet if Xavier Nady is injured or Lou just wanted to get Baker a start, albeit it with the current 5 outfielders already fighting for at-bats, worrying about Jeff Baker getting his hacks would be the least of my worries. For what it's worth, which is absolutely nothing, Baker is 2/7 against Moyer including 1/3 with a double last year.

Jeff Stevens has been called up and will take the bullpen spot of Esmailin Caridad who is back to the disabled list with a right elbow strain. Sean Marshall will get the bulk of the 8th-inning set-up duty until Lou and Larry change their mind again. Marshall's new job probably won't start until tomorrow though as Marshall has pitched three days in a row.

The Phillies are tops in the league in runs scored and tops in the league in OPS against lefties at .846. Good luck to you, Sloth (hat tip to Jacos for the find).

Cubs try to even up their series with the Bucs after losing the first four matchups of the season series. It's the first time the Cubs have dropped their first four games against Pittsburgh since...well, I refuse to look it up because it would depress the crap out of me.

The lefty Paul Maholm (2-3, 4.91) starts this afternoon against Ryan Dempster (2-3, 3.44). This was the pitching matchup back on 5/4 at PNC when the Cubs clung to a 2-1 lead with two out in home 6th. Dempster then told Lou Piniella that he had enough left in the tank to retire Ryan Church with the tying run aboard, at which point Church crushed a pitch into the rightfield bleachers, and all of everybody's premonitions about how Lou should have yanked Dempster in favor of Sean Marshall were proven right.

Cubbie memories—there's nothin' like 'em.

Saturday's starting lineups:

The first in-season roster move was annouced as Esmailin Caridad will go to the disabled list for sucking, a forearm strain with Jeff Gray getting called up. I updated the bullpen chart on the right with the green indicating Gray's appearances in the minors. Derrek Lee takes the day off with the sore right thumb, conveniently on day when Dave Bush is pitching, whom Lee is 5/31 against in his career against with a .413 OPS.

Lineups after the jump...

A battle of two of the better rookie pitchers from 2009 as the Cubs try to avoid the sweep.

Someone post the lineups in the comments!
Yesterday my computer's power supply unit ground to a halt. As did the Cubs' winning streak, which at seven games was their longest under Dusty Baker. I'm back up and running now though (with a brand new flat screen LCD monitor too, even if right now it's calibrated such that reds in particular are horrendously garish!). And it's the job of Greg Maddux to get this team back up and running tonight (in the final game of the first third of our season) before we watch these offences attempt the thankless task of scorings runs off Carlos Zambrano and Jake Peavy in a pitching haven of a ballpark tomorrow. Go Cubs!
