Sun Funnies. Baez gets sent down.

I know.
He's not ready.
He needs more at bats and more seasoning and to get better in the field.
But that was as exciting a Spring Training performance as I've ever seen, and I cannot wait for the day Javier Baez comes up to play at Wrigley Field.
If it's 400' to the center field fence, you think a 452 footer at least gets to the concession stands under the scoreboard?

ha...nice. also, chc/oak 4pm (ET) WGN...boni CF, olt 3rd, barney SS, valbuena 2nd...hammel pitching.

wada released...rusin/mr. carlos manuel paulino villanueva now left battling for the 5th rotation spot til j.arrieta returns. muskat (in the booth at the game) mentioned castro might start the season on rehab in the minors.

lake/valbuena back to back HRs... lake with another homer...and m.olt gets in on the homer hitting, too (5th). ...and lake makes it a 3HR day (all off different pitchers)...and valbuena goes back to back for a 2HR game. valbuena leads the team in spring HR (6)...baez/olt both with 5.

well it's spring training for WGN, too...evidently they're not going to show OAK batting in the bottom of the 9th and they're going directly to their 7pm "funny video" program. -edit- ah, they left the game to show blackhawks hockey (only available locally...rest of nation gets "getting hit in the nuts" family video show.

Bolt's got some power. I really, really don't want to see a journeyman like Valbuena or Murphy or anyone else playing third to start the season knowing there's a kid they should be giving a shot to. This isn't just a bring him up thing. It's time to see what the kid can do for 162 games. Baez, Bolt, Rizzo, and soon enough Bryant. My eyes are watering.

The throw was right at the bag but a little high. A taller more experienced firstbaseman than Ryan Roberts probably can stay on the bag and make the catch. Replay showed Roberts came down on the bag before the runner got there. The second was a high bounder where he kind of got caught in between hops and tried to backhand it. I thought he played it a little too casually. Should have been more aggressive. But wtf do I know.

I worry that Morel will lose starts at 3B as long as this roster lacks a compelling DH.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.
