Bad News, Good News, Really Good News

While I’m weighing multiple $300m+ offers, I wanted to take a moment to announce a change to the site: I will no longer be making regular daily game thread posts.

If anyone is interested in stepping up to fill that void, let me know. (Perhaps a once-a week rotation could work.)

The good news is that I will still be lurking in the background to keep the site running and making the occasional snide comment. I’ll keep the contests running, too.

The really good news is that AZ Phil is firmly committed to doing everything that he does to make the site essential reading. As long as Phil is in AZ, there will be a TCR.

In other news, which is not great but not bad, either, we have replaced the chat feature. For as much as we love our animal noises, our usage didn’t exactly warrant the cost for the Soviet-era technology called Parachat.

In its place, we have added a link to the new TCR MeWe group. Apart from being free, it's also excellent on mobile. It has a live chat feature and also the option to make more substantive posts, should the occasion arise. You’ll have to make your own animals noises.

Our man on the inside, Michael, will continue to use the best duct tape and crazy glue that we can afford to upgrade the site.

As always, go Cubs!

thanks to all of you guys.  i appreciate it.

Thx, Steve, AZP, et al. If TCR went down I'd have to start paying my way into I-Cub games again & I just got approved yesterday for renewed privileges in 2019...

Big thanks to all of you!!!

Yu caught what Chatwood's throwing? 4 walks & 4 outs...

cards extend m.mikolas 4/68m (2020-24)

they also signed m.wieters to a minor league deal.

Thanks for keeping this site being the best

bote is back, and in the lineup today.

Thanks for all the free labor, CTSteve! Free tip: Take more than one of those offers and just play for multiple teams--easy solution!

I love the idea of a once-a-week rotation and I'd be willing to step into that. 24-ish posts over 6 months would be way more manageable than 162+.

Willson with a “mammoth” (as described by Len) two run homer over left field off of Jesse Chavez.  Contreras power trending up!  Len said it was among the longest home runs he’s seen at the Rangers spring training facility.

Video of HR (and quality crack of the bat sound that’s been sorely missed)

Crunch will you be doing the daily game thread posts? Its got your name all over it.

Seconded.

i would be willing to do it if site ownership is comfortable with it and doesn't have someone else already in mind.

i wouldn't be able to do every game because of the nature of the demands of my work, though.

Crunch’s Corner?

i demand 3 corners, 2 walls, and a partially obstructed doorway.

This site is great.  Screw Twitter and the information revolution.

The decision on the amount comes later.

At the point when the team makes the initial contract tender, do they have to offer a specific salary, and if so is that the same number the team takes into arbitration? Or does the specific number the teams files at for arbitration happen at a later date?

jdrnym: A player who is signed to a contract that does not include a minor league split salary is paid his full MLB salary while optioned or after being outrighted to a minor league club.

So if a player goes to arbitration and is awarded (let's say) a $2.5M salary by the arb panel, the contract will not include a minor league split salary or performance bonuses, and if the player is sent to the minors he is paid the full $2.5M while in the minors.

Maybe Trump can give them a loan.

it's not exactly looking good when the cubs brass is complaining about "losing 100m in revenue" when a huge chunk of that seems to include Hotel Zachary.  it looks like the entire "entertainment complex" is the cubs as far as the Ricketts are concerned...and the team might have to suffer a bit because they couldn't fully realize profits last year.  they've publically stated that the big incoming tax credits from the city they're going to realize for stadium work won't help the cubs payroll.

If a player doesn't have a split salary in his contract, how much is he making when in the minors (or how is that salary determined)?

we want kyle schwarber to not be mark trumbo so badly...

either way, the NL having or not having the DH needs to be figured out pretty quickly for a lot of off-season sanity.

Waiting for Ryan Pace to be available.  He should be a week from tomorrow.

i haven't even heard a rumor...which is interesting since "virtual" winter meetings start in a couple weeks.

surprised dan kantrovitz hasn't been named "interim GM" or something...which makes me wonder how wide of a net they're casting to fill the position.  he was snagged from the A's and was an assistant GM there (and director of scouting for STL).

As Jed is promoted to President of Baseball Ops, then when will be expect a formal announcement of who the "official" GM is?

  • crunch 3 days 18 hours ago (view)

there are currently 0 signed...so it's an untapped market ripe for picking the best of the best.

well, bill 'spaceman' lee is probably out there pitching for a low-level Cuban team being paid in weed or something similar.

The "Big Three" Cubs first-time Rule 5 Draft-eligibles post-2021 will be RHSP Riley Thompson, 1B-LF Alfonso Rivas, and LHSP Jack Patterson (at least as far as things stand right now), so they will need to be scrutinized as much as possible during the course of the 2021 season (including at MLB Spring Training); That's why those three (in particular) need to get an NRI.
