Thank you, Jake!

Jake Arrieta has reportedly reached a 3 year, $75m deal (with all sorts of opt-outs and opt-ins) with the Philadelphia Phillies. Jake Arrieta is officially no longer a Cub.

On this occasion, I would therefore like thank Mr. Arrieta for everything he did in a Cubs uniform. Thank you for four and a half years of memories. Thank you for two no-hitters, a Cy-young award, and the greatest half-season of pitching ever produced by a Cub. Thank you for snapping a nine game post-season losing streak extending over a decade, with a 5 hit shut-out in the 2015 Wild-card game. Perhaps most of all, thank you for the 2014 season. Your emergence as an ace on a team with few pitching prospects, jump started the Cubs rebuild by at least a full year. You will be missed.

Amen.

I just thought of these personal memories that I got to see Jake's first start as a Cub, and his last, in-person. Both W's and well-pitched. Last years' Playoff W was a gutsy performance staving off the Dodgers for one more game in spite of some control problems, he had 9K's and 5BB. The Standing O was heartfelt and most everyone felt it was his real curtain call with the team. I wished he had retired as a Cub, but those days are over. I wish him luck, except not against us.

Arrieta was such a big part of this team getting to and winning in the playoffs. I'm so glad this isn't a situation where I have to root against him 3-5 times a year.

yanks snag n.walker for 1/5m...great deal.

that might keep g.torres in AAA a while longer, though...probably needs it...his spring hasn't been that good.

Hear, hear. Thanks, Jake. What a joy to watch. For me, the silver lining is that I'm now just a SEPTA ride away from being able to see him pitch...

jake arrieta kicked my dog and it up n' died.  true story.  i hope his arm falls off.

that said, the cy young season and 3 post-seasons of 3.08era/1.08whip was pretty cool if you're into that sort of thing.

fwiw..

"Jake Arrieta said at his introductory press conference with the Phillies on Tuesday that he intends to be ready for the season.

Arrieta obviously signed a lot later than he would he would have liked, but he's been throwing 50-65 pitch bullpen sessions every two or three days in an anticipation of latching on with a team."

Father's Day 2015 @ Target Field w/ the family when Jake's Jag began v Twins...WC game v. Bucs that same year @ Principal Park in Des Moines for a big screen game-watch w/ my sons; beautiful evening, beautiful game...Jake is gone but the swagger he brought to the Cubs remains...

For me, Jake's rise will always be equated with the Cubs'.  More than anyone else.  When he got great in the second half of 2015, the Cubs got real good.  More than any Cub pitcher I can remember -- when he pitched, you expected the Cubs to win.  CG shutout win (11K, 0 BB) in the WC game at Pittsburgh -- in an era where nobody throws CGs, particularly in the post-season.  His attitude and performance made others follow.  It is time to say goodbye, but, to me, he is one of the main guys who changed the culture.

I was at Jake's no-hitter in LA.  I watched his no hitter in Cincy from the hospital the night my daughter was born.

Needless to say, he and his time with the Cubs will be something I never forget.

    AZ Phil:
Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.
