Cubs Extinguish Blaze at Riverview

Catcher Michael Cruz belted a two-run home run and singled, drove-in another run with a sacrifice fly, picked two runners off base (one at 2nd and one at 3rd), and threw out another baserunner attempting to steal, speedy lead-off man Zach Davis (learning to switch-hit after being a RH hitter-only previously) singled, walked, stole three bases, and scored three runs, DH Ruben Reyes tripled and singled and scored two runs, CF Jose Gonzalez belted an inside-the-park HR (thanks to an ill-advised attempted diving catch by the left-fielder), and six pitchers combined to toss a four-hitter, helping the Eugene/Mesa Cubs to a 10-3 victory over the Langley Blaze in Minor League Camp game action Monday morning on Field #4 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ, and then Monday afternoon, Aramis Ademan tripled and singled and scored a run and LHSP Manny Rondon hurled four innings of shutout ball, as the South Bend Cubs (Lo-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) and the Beloit Snappers (Lo-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics) played to a 3-3 tie on Field #3, and Sandber Pimentel drilled an RBI single, doubled, reached base on an HBP, and scored two runs, and RHSP Evan Manarino fired four innings of two-hit shutout ball with four strikeouts, leading the Stockton Ports (A's Hi-A affiliate) to a 6-2 victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Hi-A affiliate), in a Cactus League Minor League doubleheader played at the Lew Wolff Training Center at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

A member of the British Columbia Premier Baseball League (BCPBL), the Langley Blaze are one of the top amateur baseball clubs in Canada. Notable alumni include Brett Lawrie and Scott Mathieson, as well as ex-Cub minor leaguer Wes Darvill.

The Blaze are on a ten-day Arizona Spring Training Trip, where they are playing minor league teams, and college and high school teams. The Blaze are scheduled to play one or two (and sometimes even three!) games per day, including morning games, afternoon games, night games, doubleheaders, and split squad games, so the Canadian lads (age 15-18) are playing a LOT of baseball in the Valley of the Sun.

Nice to see Michael Cruz getting it done with both the bat and the arm. Had a feeling he could hit based on what he did in college, but I seem to recall your report on him last summer was that his arm was pretty weak. Has his arm strength noticeably improved? Or is it more a case of picking on HS age kids (I didn't notice who they were playing when I first posted)?

BRADSBEARD: When Michael Cruz arrived in Mesa last year it was pretty obvious to everybody that he was raw behind the plate and had a long ways to go. He looked like a bat-first power-hitting catcher who probably would end up playing a lot more 1B than catcher. But he has worked hard to improve both his throwing and receiving skills (though they still need work), and Monday's game was a nice surprise. I don't how much of it was because of the competition, but hopefully he will be able to build on it going forward.

Dillon Maples looked very good Monday at Fitch Park (he struck out the side 1-2-3). I was sittng around some of the A's pitchers, and they were impressed ("who is THAT guy?").

Maples just got moved down to the Myrtle Beach squad from the Tennessee squad, and I would say he will very likely be a mainstay in the Pelican bullpen in 2017.

The PR-Netherlands game was unbelievable. I've definitely enjoyed WBC way more this year than in previous iterations. Rooting for Javy takes away a little sting from rooting for Yadi.

Walker was a complimentary piece who was well past his prime. Edmonds, Holliday, Ozzie Smith and a few others were good trades. Notably, they have almost always been quiet in the free agent market. But the fundamental workings of the organization were always based primarily upon the constant output of a well oiled minor league organization. That organization has ground to a halt. And when did that hard stop start to happen? Right at the beginning of the Goldschmidt/Arenado era, perpetuated by the Contreras signing, followed by the rotation purchases during the last offseason. The timing is undeniable and, in my mind, not coincidental.

Again, we are all saying that player development became deemphasized. I’m just linking it directly to the recent trades and involvement in the free agent market. I don’t see how the two concepts can be decoupled.

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.
