Pelicans Brief South Bend on Way to Succeed in Intrasquad Business

Shawon Dunston Jr stroked an RBI double, reached base on a bunt single, and scored two runs, Trey Martin clubbed an RBI triple, stole two bases, and scored two runs, and Gioskar Amaya reached base three times on two walks and a single, helping the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to an 8-5 victory over the South Bend Cubs in Minor League Camp intrasquad action this morning on Field #6 at Mesa CubTown at Riverview Park.

Frandy de la Rosa roped a triple and an RBI single and scored a run for South Bend in a losing cause.

Four pitchers threw in the game, with two starting pitchers "piggy-backing" for each squad. Of the four, Erick Leal had the worst outing, allowing five runs on eight hits (including two doubles and a triple) and a walk (plus a throwing error and a wild pitch) in just 3.2 IP.

according to the ESPN announce crew, baez has been showing up at the park very early for a while to work on the suggested changes to his batting approach. btw...game is on ESPN. their strikezone graphic layover is annoying as hell.

Baez crappy.

Typo. Meant to say scrappy.

both work.

And he just craps scraps out a run.

guess the Astros were right (rotoworld):

Brady Aiken underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday.

Last year's No. 1 overall pick left his first outing with IMG Academy last Thursday with an arm injury, and now everyone's worst fears have been realized.

Who is this team ? What have they done with dumb, boring and slow Cubs of my youth ? /so happy

1st inning recap off J. Weaver

Baez single, SB

Russell reaches on FC, grounder to short who went to 3B to get Baez but ball was dropped, by most accounts he would have been out easily

Russell SB

Bryant K (WTF? - Iowa for you)

Soler sac Fly

Rizzo GO 4-3

Third strike on Bryant was bs Rizzo sucks he's old

I like watching Addison Russell play shortstop. He's good at that.

never felt Baez was going to knock Castro off that position, but I do think Russell can.

Dh for nl /now!

We want a pitcher, not a Jock-itcher!!!

*ducks*

KKKK Bryant?

too soon, huh?

Rizzo double, Olt 2-run HR off Weaver

Neat!

Who?

the good news...motte is throwing 96mph. the bad news...he's got no control/command over it. wow... 0.1ip 3h 1bb 1k 4r/er still, the fact he's throwing 94-96mph is at least a good sign of his pre-injury self.

I didn't get a chance to see the game but that's actually good news, even if he did get clobbered. Still would like to see a good outing before the year starts.

T. Wood in to pinch-hit

Hits HR on 1-2 count

#baseball

t.wood HR...in a pinch hit situation for some reason...woo spring.

k.bryant with an OF assist...along with the ROY/MVP he's going to win this year, he'll probably get a gold glove, too. good for him.

Triple for Cubs

curt schilling pretending to listen to theo is unnerving and amusing. props to theo for going on air to keep up his b/s "no, seriously you guys, this has nothing to do with service time" campaign. he's taking some hardball questions from schilling.

Schilling is talking "business decisions "? HAHAHAHAJAHAHhaja!!!!!!

"what happened to capitalism when i need it?" - theo, after espn continues interviewing him rather than going to commercial after a quick inning.

hey espn...thanks for the temporary blindness. that was f'n rad...thanks...

Rooftop owner under reporting attendance? ~fans self~ Dave McKinney ‏@davemckinney 18m Skybox on Sheffield owner Marc Hamid indicted in $600,000 scheme to defraud the Cubs, state, city & county, US attorney's office announces. Get ready to eat a big sh!tsandwich, roofies.

Is he one of the guys in the lawsuit against the Cubs?

yup

Unclean hands aren't a good thing if you want to enforce the terms of a contract.

Len and JD on CSN for Cubs today vs WSux Samardzija vs Hammel /bold prediction Samardzija will be on his 4th team in 13 months

Who was last pitcher to pitch opening day for Cubs and Sox in consecutive seasons?

Jaime Navarro?

Ding!

that's depressing for both teams involved...

Wasn't Navarro pretty solid for the Cubs? He sure imploded with the Sox...

Yes, and Cubs signed Tapani from Sox

decent mid-rotation pitcher...but opening day starter, damn...

Hey look! Jeff Samardzija ! Soler 2 run bomb in first

Even without Bryant in there, this might be the best Cubs lineup (or at least best 1-5) since 2008. Am I mistaken?

cog, soler, rizzo, and castro HRs...nice.

"cog"? So "CRUNCH".

Gracious. In hockey: Coggsy In Australia: Cogg-o In Quade-world: something even worse "cog" will do fine.

i'm just gonna call everyone by the first letter in their last name followed by "dawg." c-dawg, it is. this is going to get weird with castro c-dawg around...and if welly c-dawg doesn't get traded.

looks like the cubs have a bullpen problem...p.coke is making one hell of a strong showing this spring. 7ip 3h 2bb 5k 0r/er that said, he's been getting those numbers off a chunk of late-inning-quality spring bats. maddon doesn't seem to be employing any "bullpen start" days this spring, where a chunk of relievers go the first few innings vs better quality bats. heck, that practice seems to have fallen out of favor all over mlb at this point...used to be a bit more common, especially on split squad days.

CRUNCH: FWIW Coke has his fastball velocity consistently up to 92-93 now, after being in the high-80's his first couple of 2015 ST outings.

  • As long as you're one of the faster gazelles, it's probably ok!

It's better to be the cheetah in that scenario.

  • Hey Phil, I saw where the Cubs recently traded for some additional international pool money. Have they made any recent signings of note?

  • He had no trouble logging SBs last summer, per the game logs. If he can hit a little bit.........

  • TIM: If you've never seen him, Rochest Cruz is a wiry and - VERY - fast second-baseman who looks like he's about 12 years old.

He takes a lot of pitches and has a sort of slashing approach at the plate when he does swing (he pulled the 5th inning triple into the RF corner and it could have been an inside-the-park HR if the third base coach hadn't stopped him at 3rd because there was only one out).

He is a very unusual player. Kind of like Fernando Kelli on uppers.

  • SONICWIND: If you disregard the affect it would have on club payroll (slight) and the player's minor league option years (substantial) and how it might impact the Cubs MLB 40-man roster later in the season (TBD), the actual best temporary replacement for David Bote for the two or three days he's on Paternity Leave who might enhance their chances to win would probably be Trent Giambrone, but I would be surprised if the Cubs were to add Giambrone to the 25 (and the 40) right now.

He was fun to follow through the DSL last season.

  • I hope the Cubs' financial situation isn't so dire that worrying about saving $25k is going to factor on what player they can call up that would best enhance their chances to win.

  • Fair call, and educational, as usual.

    We shall see.

  • Remember that when a minor league player with no previous MLB 40-man roster time is added to the 40 during the 2019 season, his minor league split salary is fixed at $45,300 for his first season on the 40, so if a player like Machin was to get a brief ride on the 25, it would require placing him on the 40 to do that, and once he is added to the 40 -- even if he is outrighted back to the minors after three days in Chicago -- his 2019 minor league salary would jump from about $18,000 (where it is now ) to $45,300, and I doubt that the Cubs would do that if they can just recall a player (Happ
