Duffy over Vargas. Hmmmm.

matt duffy is breaking with the team...alright, then.

that's unexpected...  righty hitter that's done very little vs late-inning minor league and AAAA talent this spring...didn't play last year (or this winter)...another 3rd/SS option.

maybin signs a minor league deal...i.vargas DFA'd....r.brothers + e.sogard joins the big league club, as expected.

More weird Cubbery this season. Cutting Vargas, who has multiple years of control left, current value, hits switch, can play SS, cut for one year of Sogard who is decidedly meh and Duffy who plays fewer positions and has likely already injured himself in the last 3 minutes. They each have one year of control left too. In a year where we're "contending" no less

joc pederson does home runs.

maples also breaks with the mlb team.  let the adventures continue.

last spring game for the cubs tomorrow...

the real thing starts on thursday, early afternoon home game vs PIT (3 game series day games).  first cubs night game is monday 5th vs MIL.

Opening day should be a national holiday.  Like most years, I'm taking a half day off work to celebrate the greatest day of the year. My favorite local sports bar has a nice outdoor patio and it looks to be a beautiful weather day here in Texas.  I apologize in advance for any 3pm beer and wing induced rantings.  Opening day is my self indulgent yes day.

i get my 2nd covid shot the day before and i'm off for holiday on friday, so i'm doing a 4-day weekend.

hopefully i'll be part of that pool of people with little to no symptoms by the time 1st pitch rolls around.

I'll be there opening day and have only missed one home opener since college days when I was in Stl. 8200 fans. Tribune weather forcast for Thursday is pretty cold (high 43, low 29) but clear. Wrigley Covid protocols include masks, cash no longer taken at the food stations (some sort of Cubs debit card will be used) and assigned bathrooms based on seat location. Even the "classic"  troughs will have plexiglass dividers. Reminded myself that the last homestand with fans  was that awful 4 loss weekend against the Cardinals, ugly, ugly, ugly. So I'm (as always )hopeful for improvement in the 2021 team. Per Ernie: The Cubs will make a run in twenty-21.

The Cubs have released minor league LHRP Jerry Vasto. He had an NRI to MLB Spring Training.

The White Sox released C Jonathan Lucroy from his minor league contract, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs sign him as a temp replacement for Austin Romine.

Here are the pitcher reports from today's Cubs - D'backs game at Sloan Park for anyone who might have missed it:

ZACH DAVIES:
FB: 87-89
CT: 83-86
CH: 78-79
CV: 72-74
COMMENT: Another efficient outing from Davies, as he continues to refine his most excellent Greg Maddux impersonation...

DAN WINKLER:
FB: 92-93
CT: 89-90
SL: 83
COMMENT: Finished Davies' 4th inning... threw mostly FB & CT.. looked much better than he did last time...

CRAIG KIMBREL:
FB: 94-95, T-96
SL: 83-86
COMMENT: FB velo down a couple of ticks from last time and command was spotty...

ANDREW CHAFIN:
FB: 90-93
SL: 83-84
COMMENT: Chafin wins the highly-prized but little-known "Cubs Cactus League Spring Training Consistency Award" (that I just made-up) for 2021... Very relaxing to watch because he has solid command and throws strikes...

BRANDON WORKMAN:
FB: 88-90
SL/CT: 86-87
CV: 77-78
COMMENT: Uses smoke & mirrors to get through his outings... I doubt that he will be able to get away with that once the regular season begins...

REX BROTHERS:
FB: 92-95
SL: 85-88
COMMENT: As I said way back after his first outing about a month ago, no question Brothers is the #2 lefty reliever in Cubs Camp...

RYAN MEISINGER:
FB: 91-94
CH: 84
COMMENT: Veteran MLB RHRP will likely be assigned to the Cubs Alternate Training Site in South Bend...

PEDRO STROP:
FB: 93-95
CT: 87-89
SL: 83-85
COMMENT: FB & SL velo up significantly from last time... he looked "locked-in" like he did in the best days of the old Strop...

strop looked like he was having fun out there today.

it's really cool how playing vs DET in 2021 counts toward the MLB win/loss totals of a team.  it's like using a cheat code.

there has been a ton of fringe signings the past 48 hours by many teams...guys that were not playing organized ball or playing indie ball for the past 1-2+ seasons.

The Cubs have apparently signed Tyler Suellentrop, a pitcher drafted by Seattle in 2018 from Indian River Community College in Florida. He's been assigned to Myrtle Beach. I expect he'll pitch on Friday.

    wrigley going 60% capactity may 28th.  hopefully we'll be 100% by july/august.

we're getting closer to "normal."  i hope we can get things stable for those that can't get a vax, and those that are still refusing or on the fence will cross over and join the rest of functioning society.

as someone who was on strong chemo with a wide open immune system a decade ago, i'm thinking about them and others in similar health conditions.

VIDEO: Zach Davis and Rochest Cruz are (were) probably the two fastest players (sprint-speed on the bases) in the Cubs system (though not Cruz anymore, obviously).

Cubs minor league RHRP Ben Hecht (Cubs 2017 12th round pick - Wichita State) had TJS a couple of days ago.

Rochest Cruz had some success in the DSL a couple of years ago.  Too bad he didn't pan out.  Carlos Pacheco showed power numbers in the DSL two or three years ago along with a high K rate.

it screws up stats.  i know you play for wins/losses, but real money is on the line for players and makes agent/player homework selling their client a bit harder.

it also makes historical comparisons difficult.

the amount of time i've seen a fresh inning starting out...bunt guy to 3rd for an out, IBB, IBB is too high.  what would amount to a leadoff single following that can easily turn into 2 runs (1 earned) with guys on the corner...which usually leads to another IBB.

Jay Jaffe has a timely argument against the runner on second rule over at fangraphs: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-runner-on-second-i...

I still don't know why we don't just have ties. Obviously, the Cubs could have dodged most of these situations by simply hitting a little bit during the regulation innings.

The Cubs have signed free-agent RHSP Adrian Sampson to a minor league contract and he has been assigned to AAA Iowa, and RHP Michael McAvene, LHP Jack Patterson, and OF Donnie Dewees have been placed on the 60-day IL to open up slots for Sampson, Trayce Thompson, and Kyle Ryan on the Cubs minor league 180-man Domestic Reserve List.

Someone on social media was floating Yoelqui Cespedes to the Cubs in a Bryant trade.

I was clueless if it was permitted. It is.
