Trainer Olympics & Good Pitching Featured at Riverview Park

Zack Short collected three hits (two singles and a triple) and scored two runs, Chris Pieters singled twice and walked and drove-in a run, and RHSP Duncan Robinson (Cubs 2016 9th round draft pick - Dartmouth) hurled four innings of shutout ball (groundball machine with a 7/1 GO/AO) and RHP Matt Swarmer (Cubs 2016 19th round draft pick - Kutztown U.) followed with four innings of one-run ball (with six strikeouts), leading the South Bend Cubs (Lo-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) to a 4-2 victory over the Beloit Snappers (Lo-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics) on Field #5, and RHSP Casey Meisner tossed four innings of one-run ball as the Stockton Ports (A's Hi-A affiliate) edged the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Hi-affiliate) 3-2 on Field #6, in Cactus League Minor League Camp doubleheader action Friday afternoon at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

The game on Field #5 was pre-planned as a ten-inning affair.

RHSP Thomas Hatch (Cubs 2016 3rd round draft pick - Oklahoma State) was the starting pitcher for Myrtle Beach on Field #6, working 4.2 IP (90 pitches) and allowing two runs on five hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts. He also threw a WP, and committed a two-base throwing error on an attempted pick-off at 1st base. Hatch is a very advanced pitcher and could move very quickly through the Cubs system. In fact he could see MLB as early as next season - IF - he can improve his command (he threw only 49% strikes in the game).

Prior to the games, the Cubs Player Develpment Department held their annual "Trainers Olympics" on Field #6. Cubs minor league trainers, strength & conditioning coaches, equipment managers, clubhouse personnel, and video & IT techs participated. Events included a Home Run Derby (from 2nd base), catching pop-ups at home plate while wearing catchers gear, and throwing BP. 150 or so players gathered around the field to provide encouragement to the contestants as they gamely tried to show-off their baseball skills.

Here are the abridged box scores from the games (Cubs players only):

EUGENE/MESA (EXTENDED SPRING TRAINING): 43+16

NOTE: The Eugene/Mesa squad will be formed once Cactus League minor league games start in mid-March, and that squad becomes the EXTENDED SPRING TRAINING group on Opening Day. Meanwhile, at the start of Minor League Camp the South Bend squad will be "heavier" than the other three (almost twice as many players will initially be assigned to the South Bend group as will be assigned to the Iowa, Tennessee, and Myrtle Beach squads).

Players who spent the 2016 season in the DSL and then attended post-season AZ Instructs are projected to be assigned to the South Bend squad at Minor League Camp, but it is possible that some (even most) of them will remain at the Cubs Dominican Academy and not report to Mesa until the very end of Spring Training

AZ PHIL-In your organization depth you list SP and RP of the relief pitchers who do you think will close for each level. I'd assume Pena at Iowa, then maybe guys like David Berg, James Norwood or so in the lower levels.

In reply to by cubbies.4ever

CUBBIES-4-EVER: Jared Cheek (South Bend), Dillon Maples (Myrtle Beach), and Ryan McNeil (Tennessee) have been used in the closer role for their respective squads in Minor League Spring Training games and are probably the best bet to be in that role once the regular season starts.

But Dave Berg was used as a closer once he was dropped from Iowa to Tennessee and he could share the job with McNeil, Craig Brooks or James Norwood could be the primary closer at Myrtle Beach now that they have been moved-down from Tennessee, and Dakota Mekkes could be the closer at South Bend or share the job with Cheek now that Mekkes has been assigned to that level.

The closer for Iowa is still TBD. Daniel Corcino was used as closer this week for the I-Cubs, and Pierce Johnson has been used as the Iowa closer, too. Since it's not yet clear which reliever will be the primary closer for Iowa, I have Felix Pena, Pierce Johnson, and Jose Rosario as the first three listed on the Depth Chart only because they are on the 40-man roster and the others aren't, but I suspect either Corcino or P. Johnson will probably get the majority of save opportunities at Iowa once the regular season starts.

Thanks for the closer insight. It's always disappointing to see the SP Cubs draft with such potential end up getting relegated to a RP. Given most pitchers were starters originally, exceptions like Strop etc. I doubt that when the Cubs drafted McNeil (given he had TJS, though now-a-days doesn't really matter i.e. Lackey) in the 3rd rd and giving Maples $2.5 million in the 14th rd to skip going to UNC they thought they'd end up being in the bullpen. Both were high school draftees so they're future is tougher to see, but still.

Now is the time (end of Minor League Camp) where you might see one or more reverse minor league roster tweaks (that is, a promotion rather than a demotion), as players are actually moved up a level rather than down a level, either to replace an injured player, or because of second thoughts by the organization.

For instance, you might see some last-minute minor league roster adjustments involving the infielders (2B-3B-SS).

HAGSAG: Jon Fierro (one of the Iowa trainers) was outstanding in all phases of the event. Myrtle Beach Coach Ty Wright was on the P A and he kept everybody in stitches with his running commentary. He always does the Home Run Derby at Instructs, too. He has a future in broadcasting, and I'm not kidding. He is better than 90% of the guys at MLB Network and ESPN.

Phil, which squad is Balaguert assigned to? I don't see him on any team roster

DJL: Balaguert is assigned to Tennessee. I failed to add him to the Tennessee list when he was moved-down from Iowa. Thanks for catching that.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

  • hellfrozeover (view)

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

  • crunch (view)

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

  • Eric S (view)

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

  • crunch (view)

    boo.

  • crunch (view)

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

  • crunch (view)

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
