Cub Pitchers Shine in the Arizona Sun at Riverview Park

Ryan Williams hurled 6-2/3 innings of one-hit ball (no walks) and combined with Rob Zastryzny to toss a two-hit shutout, as the Iowa Cubs blanked the Tennessee Smokies 1-0 on Field #6, and Yeiler Peguero slugged a solo HR and Dylan Cease tossed 4-2/3 innings of three-hit one-run ball with six strikeouts (81 pitches), as the South Bend Cubs edged the Eugene Emeralds 3-2 on Field #5, in Cubs Minor League Camp doubleheader intrasquad action Sunday morning at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.
Preston Morrison threw 5-2/3 innings of one-run three-hit ball (no walks) for Tennessee in a losing cause on Field #6.

Brandon Cummins (ex-Southern Illinois Miners - Frontier League) singled twice, walked twice, stole three bases, and threw out a runner on the bases for Eugene.

LHRP Brian Duensing (on Cubs MLB 10-day DL - back spasms) saw game action on Field #6, throwing an inning for Tennessee (13 pitches). After striking out Chesny Young on three pitches, Duensing surrendered a walk to Mark Zagunis before inducing Victor Caratini to roll into an inning-ending 6-4-3 DP. From the way he looked today, you would almost think Duensing had no back problem at all.

Dylan Cease was throwing his fastball at 96-97 MPH (touched 98) and he had his plus-curve working on Field #5, but command is still a bit of a concern as he walked four and threw only 56% strikes.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans start a day earlier than the other three Cubs full-season affiliates, so most of the team left town this morning. (That's why South Bend played Eugene instead of Myrtle Beach). However, Pelicans LHSP Justin Steele, RHRP Jeremy Null, and LHRP Jordan Minch were left behind at Minor League Camp to get their scheduled work in the intrasquad game on Field #5.

Opening Day rosters are just about set, but in a roster tweak made after yesterday's intrasquad games, the Cubs signed 28-year old ex-MIA SS Osvaldo Martinez to a minor league contract and he has been assigned to Iowa (although he will need a few days to get into playing shape), and so SS Carlos Penalver was moved back to AA Tennessee from AAA Iowa and SS Bryant Flete was moved back to Hi-A Myrtle Beach from Tennessee. Chesny Young is the "supersub" at Iowa, and while he can play shortstop, Martinez will probably be the primary I-Cubs SS once he is in game shape. The Cubs had hoped that they would be able to re-sign Munenori Kawasaki and have him be the #1 shotstop at Iowa after he was released by the club in a procedural move last Tuesday, but Kawasaki somewhat unexpectedly decided to return to Japan. (I-Cubs SS Elliot Soto will start the season on the 7-day DL and could miss considerable time with a foot injury).

It appears that OF Jacob Hannemann, 1B Chris Dominguez, and 1B Yasiel Balaguert will also start the season on the 7-day DL, although I don't know the nature of their injuries. With Balaguert out of action, C-1B Ian Rice makes the Tennessee Smokies Opening Day roster after an outstanding Minor League Camp. They don't actually award MVP trophies at Minor League Camp, but if they did, Ian Rice and Jeffrey Baez would probably be the co-winners for the Tennessee squad.

Also, Isaac Paredes has won the starting SS job, Luis Ayala has won the starting RF slot, and Jhonny Pereda will be one of the catchers at South Bend. All three jumped over Eugene and went directly from AZL Cubs to South Bend. (Paredes was moved-up to South Bend for the 2016 MWL playoffs, but that's only because the AZL Cubs did not qualify for the AZL playoffs, and the Cubs didn't want to disturb the Eugene Emeralds roster since the Ems were in the NWL playoffs). Each of the three (Paredes, Ayala, and Pereda) had an impressive Minor League Camp.

Here are the box scores from the two games:

It started last year and continued into today where Contreras seems afraid to go out and talk to certain pitchers like Lackey and today Lester when they are struggling. I really hope this is something he grows into.

Cubs seemed very flat tonight -- no energy, even when they got hits. Strop gives up a late inning HR to STL on an 0-2 pitch -- bad flashbacks.

Man, they seem to have a lot of walk-off losses in STL. Hopefully, Jake can no-hit 'em Tuesday.

I wonder why Joe didn't challenge the Dexter slide -- that was clearly illegal.

"Live" BP at Minor League Camp today (Monday): Iowa RHSPs Jake Buchanan and Aaron Brooks, Tennessee RHSP Duane Underwood Jr, and Myrtle Beach RHSP Oscar de la Cruz each threw five innings (75 pitches - 15 pitches each inning), in preparation for starts for their respective teams next weekend. Brooks had his third inning interrupted when he was struck on the base of his left thumb with a line-drive, but he was able to return to the mound for his fourth and fifth innings.

cubs are on pace for a record-shattering 162 loss season. should the cubs target 17-18 year old Rookie/A ball prospects or international cap space money?

yeah, if you turn the luck the other way they're on their way to the best season in the history of baseball. i guess i should wait another game or 2 before calling the season done. sample size and all that... i'm just sick of this sorry excuse for a season so far. maddon's job has to be in the hot seat and on the line.

Yeah, I'm done. Barely halfway thru that 30 pack of Old Style I bought to celebrate the start of the season and it's already over. Drank OS thru the playoffs and it made the Cubs win. It's only silly if it doesn't work. I hate my stomach and liver. My wife hated the morning after. See you in 2125 for the next World Series. Wasn't that a Zaeger and Evans song? "In the year 2125"?

"It's only silly if it doesn't work." Amen to that, brother. If I change chairs mid-game, and the Cubs rally, who's to say it didn't help? A flutter of butterfly wings, and all that. Cubs are now under .500 for the first time since April 10, 2015. It was a great run.

More "live" BP at Riverview Park today (Tuesday)L RHSP Williams Perez threw ive innings (80 pitches - 14-18 pitches per inning), and RHP Andury Acevedo, Tyler Peyton, Enrique de los Rios, Luis Aquino, and Jose Leidenz threw one inning a piece (20-25 pitches each inning). Also, recently-signed SS Osvaldo Martinez was called off Field #5 in the middle of "live" BP and was told to get to the clubhouse ASAP. He apparently will be heading to Sky Harbor Airport to catch a flight to Oklahoma City, where the Iowa Cubs open their season on Thursday.

Final roster cuts involving South Bend and Myrtle Beach, both of whom begin their season tomorrow (Wednesday): DEMOTIONS: TENNESSEE to SOUTH BEND: INF Vimael Machin MYRTLE BEACH to SOUTH BEND: RHSP Chad Hockin and RHP Michael Rucker MYRTLE BEACH to EXTENDED SPRING TRAINING: RHRP Greyfer Eregua, RHRP Tyler Peyton, and LHRP John Williamson SOUTH BEND to EXTENDED SPRING TRAINING: RHRP John Michael Knighton, RHRP Mark Malave, and LHRP Jose Paulino PROMOTIONS: EXTENDED SPRING TRAINING to MYRTLE BEACH: INF Adonis Paula EXTENDED SPRING TRAINING to SOUTH BEND: RHP Matt Swarmer

BRADSBEARD: All I know at this point is that Jose Paulino was one of several pitchers left behind at Extended Spring Training when South Bend and Myrtle Beach left town. I'll let you know when I find out additional info. BTW, the starting rotation at South Bend is Manuel Rondon, Duncan Robinson, Tyson Miller, Dylan Cease, and Erling Moreno piggy-backing with either Kyle Miller or Matt Swarmer. Duncan Robinson was the big surprise at Minor League Camp, forcing his way into the South Bend rotation with an outstanding performance in minor league Cactus League games. (Like Kyle Hendricks, Robinson is a Dartmouth grad). The rotation at Myrtle Beach should be Adbert Alzolay, Thomas Hatch, Casey Bloomquist, Justin Steele, and Oscar de la Cruz. Ryan Kellogg was expected to piggy-back with de la Cruz, but after de la Cruz threw 75 pitches in "live" BP yesterday (Monday), it might not be necessary to piggy-back de la Cruz with another pitcher.

Confirmed the Cubs have released RHRP Frank Batista, RHSP Dallas Beeler, RHSP Jonathan Martinez, RHSP Jordan Pries, and RHRP Michael Wagner. Batista was signed by the Cubs as an IFA out of the Dominican Republic in 2009, Beeler was Cubs 2010 41st round draft pick (Oral Roberts U.), pitched for Cubs in 2014-15 (8 GS - 19.1 IP), and missed most of 2016 season with shoulder issue, Martinez was acquired from Dodgers for Darwin Barney in 2013, Pries was acquired along with LHP Mike Montgomery from Seattle Mariners for 1B Dan Vogelbach and RHSP Paul Blackburn last July, and Wagner was Cubs 15th round draft pick in 2013 (U. of San Diego) and was a college teammate of Kris Bryant. There are more releases pending.

Also RHRP Greyfer Eregua and RHRP Tyler Skulina have been released. Skulina was the Cubs 4th round pick in 2013 (Kent State). He was a SP at Tennessee in 2016, but was moved to the bullpen at Minor League Camp and it did not go well. Eregua was an IFA signing out of Venezuela in 2012. He was a reliever at South Bend last season, but did not make the Myrtle Beach or South Bend 2017 Opening Day rosters.

Ex-Cub minor leaguer RHRP Jordan Brink (released last month) signed with River City (Frontier League)

LHP Daniel Moskos (signed minor league contract with Cubs in December, then was released or contract was voided) has signed with Sugar Land (Atlantic League).

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
