Rockies Blank Cubs & Ian Stewart at Talking Stick

Rockies hitters rapped out six extra-base hits (a double, three triples, and two HR) and five Rockies pitchers combined to toss a six-hit shutout with twelve strikeouts, as the Cubs were whitewashed 9-0 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training Opening Day action this morning at Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Rehabbing from a strained quad suffered in an intrasquad game in February, Ian Stewart played 3B for five innings and batted six times (once in each of the first six innings), going 0-6 with three strikeouts (all three swinging), two fly outs, and a line-drive out, leaving seven baserunners stranded (four in scoring position).

The game was continued into the bottom of the 9th inning so that all of the Cubs pitchers scheduled to throw today could get their work.

AZ Phil: Can you update us with your thoughts on catcher Chadd Krist. He's off to a good start at KC. Seems like a good bat. How are his catching skills? What is his upside projection as a prospect, i.e. starter, backup or move to another position?

My 2 cents before AZ Phil chimes in. Saw the cougars friday night. Krist has a nice eye and takes the ball to center/right field. Not a lot of pop yet. Seems to be decent behind the plate. Other observations: J. Candelario looks like a stud. Just missed a 3 run game tying homer in the eighth on a 3-1 pitch. Defensively he looked a bit shaky. Vogelbach saved him an error in the first on a swipe tag and then he booted one later. Very cold night, mid-30's, but he still looked very impressive at the plate. Vogelbach looked very anxious and was swinging at a lot of bad pitches. Made a bad error that led to first run as he ranged too far to his right on a chopper. Easy play for the second basemen. Vogelbach was 3/4 of the way to second base when he kicked it. Rock Shoulders is a masher. Lumbers around the bases, but he drove in the only run with a double. Tried to strech it into a triple and was thrown out rather easily (watch the coaches!) Trey Martin reminds me of Doug Glanville (build and approach). Very fast, but no real pop yet. Again very cold night, but this could be a very exciting team when Almora comes back and the weather warms up.

Rays lose due to a ridiculous called strike 3. We need some friggin robots up in this bitch.

The ump was obviously tired of baseball.

That was such an awesomely terrible call. The catcher trapped it in the dirt. HAHAHA

Yep, I just watched the replay online, but it looked like the catcher immediately went out to the mound for a mound visit and it turned into a mound celebration.

AZ Phil, I see you have Rony Rodriguez listed as back in EX S.T.. Has this future slugger returned?

HAGSAG: Rony Rodriguez is back on the field, but he is restricted to "LIMITED ACTIVITY ONLY."

Same goes for Carlos Escobar, Jesse Hodges, Albert Almora, Brad Zapenas, Jin-Young Kim, Dayan Diaz, Chang-Yom Lim, Daury Torrez, Casey Weathers, Greg Rohan, Kyler Burke, Armando Rivero, and Marcelo Carreno,

Julio Borbon designated...come on new Cubs leadoff hitter.

"Indians designated RHP Robert Whitenack for assignment." lulz.

Whitenack DFA'd by Indians...

I would think the Cubs would be all over getting Borbon. Compared to Sappelt he is a god damn all-star.

"I would think the Cubs would..." ...already be crying in their beer. ...be on suicide watch.

I would think the Cubs would... be further under .500

Lillibridge is abysmal. So thrilled to know we have no better folks to be a place-holder in the minor leagues than this Sox reject.

The Cubs re-signed OF Michael Hermosillo to a 2022 Major League contract just prior to the midnight Wednesday MLB transaction freeze.

Hermosillo was non-tendered on Tuesday because he was a Rule 5 Draft-Excluded Player, and if he had remained on the 40 the Cubs would not have been able to outright him to the minors any earlier than 20 days prior to MLB opening Day.

we shouldn't, especially with how much payroll room for 2024+ this top-costing-for-fans team with a heavily monitized ballpark in a major media market has.

backloaded contracts aren't exactly groundbreaking new things...neither are cheap-ass owners.  i don't expect them to compete every year, but i expect them to try after a punt season where they traded away the core.  NYY, NYM, LAD, LAA, BOS, etc. don't seem to have trouble doing this even if it means throwing a bit of money around...

Stroman, a pleasant surprise.  Good to know we aren't completely punting until 2025.

CRUNCH: Clint Frazier's 2022 base salary is only $1.5M and he has a minor league option available, so I think it's more likely than not that he opens 2022 at AAA.

On the other hand, Harold Ramirez is out of minor league options, and it is unknown at this point what he will get in 2022 as a "super two."

until clint fraizer came on board i wouldn't have counted bryant out.

OF is kinda crowded right now, though there's no stars in the mix.  fraizer - happ - ortega - heyward - h.ramirez leading the group...  even if he split time between OF/3rd with wisdom that just makes it more crowded, plus the team allegedly wants hoerner to prepare to be used as a super-utility guy.

Ok, if Cubs are going there....I want Correa and Bryant. Unless this is just about selling tickets.

With Jason Adam and Michael Hermosillo having been non-tendered, the only 2021 Rule 5 Draft-Excluded Players remaining on the Cubs MLB 40-man roster are Scott Effross, Alfonso Rivas, Ethan Roberts, and Nelson Velazquez. Draft-Excluded players cannot be outrighted to the minors until 20 days prior to MLB Opening Day, so Effross, Rivas, Roberts, and Velazquez are the only players on the 40 with off-season roster-removal restrictions.

Sad but true.  According to my back of the napkin numbers the Cubs have aroumd $100MM in payroll space to match last seasons but they're shopping in the non-tendereds ailse.  At the same time they talk of being "competitive".  The cognitive dissonance is overwhelming.

I suspect Jason Adam and Michael Hermosillo will re-sign with the Cubs on minor league deals with NRIs to 2022 MLB Spring Training, possibly as early as tomorrow.

matt boyd non-tendered by DET...that sounds about the right part of the scrap pile the cubs are digging around
