AZ PHIL: Does Javy Baez have a Psych Coach out there? He needs one. In spite of him injuring himself last year carelessly on a slide, what does he do this year? Slides HEAD FIRST INTO 1B! In a Spring Training game, no less. I remember you mentioned several years ago he was cocky and didn't seem to take coaching well. Does it still seem the same to you?

E-MAN: Javy Baez has matured over the past couple of years. He is still very self-confident, though, and sometimes it's hard for a guy like that to accept coaching. 

The problem with Baez is that he is the kind of player who has to find out the hard way that his way isn't necessarily he best way, and that the hard way can sometimes involve physical pain and injury. 

I don't know how many times he has to slide into a base head-first and sustain a finger, thumb, hand, or wrist injury before he learns his lesson. Hopefully he will figure it out sooner rather than later.

Ricketts said today on Kap and Company that Theo has money at the trade deadline if there's something they need as well as having prospect resources to trade. Very interesting to hear him say it so publically considering all we heard about the payroll being capped.

AZ PHIL: What do you believe the scenario might be with Victorino? Do you think he has some stuff left in the tank to be a productive spot starter?

E-MAN: While I think he has something to offer as an MLB 4th outfielder, I don't think there is a spot for Victorino with the Cubs at this time. So I kind of expect him to opt out as soon as he can and try his luck elsewhere, and he should be able to find a gig with another club.

Hey, Phil: Rashad Crawford is off to a good small-sample start. I've tended to confuse my memories for him with Trey Martin, both being tall raw HS CFers drafted in the 11th-13th round area. Two Q's: 1. I know Martin has gotten good reviews for his CF defense/range, and I thought the same was true for Crawford as well. Am I remembering right, that Crawford might be a rangy, asset-defense guy in CF? Or not really, and he's probably not likely to be above average or average in the majors defensively? 2. He's K'd a lot, and shown little power in past. Has he matured significantly physically, so that if things developed well for him he might have at least decent power? If he's going to K a lot, that's one thing if you hit some HR's and play good CF. But hard to make it as a high-K guy without either plus defense or decent power.

CRAIG: Both Trey Martin and Rashad Crawford are above-average defenders in CF, although Martin is more polished and has a stronger arm and makes fewer mistakes. Crawford was a basketball player in HS (his nickname was "Baby Jordan") where baseball was not his first sport, and so he had more to learn than Martin did, and he has improved a lot.

Another thing to remember about Crawford is that he is a natural RH hitter with some power but very poor contact skills who was converted to a LH slap hitter his second season in pro ball to take advantage of his plus-speed. Since becoming a LH hitter Crawford has bulked-up and developed more power and the ability to drive the ball LH. I think his hitting (especially contact skills) is still a work-in-progress, however, and he will have to find a happy medium between being a LH slap hitter who tries to bunt for hits or hit the ball on the ground and one who can drive the ball into the OF and collect a few doubles and triples and an occasional HR. He also doesn't walk enough to be a successful top-of-the-order guy.

Martin is an outstanding defensive CF but he is also a first-ball fastball hitter with below-average power and well-below average contact skills, and nothing much has changed with him over the years, so what you see now is pretty much what you'll get. I would be surprised if he makes it to AA.

On the other hand, Crawford is continuing to improve and has a higher-ceiling than Martin, but whether Crawford can eventually put it all together still remians to be seen. It will likely take another couple of years to find that out. But Crawford is definitely the better prospect of the two.

Thanks, Phil. Hadn't realized Crawford had switched to LH. That's a tough thing; hitting is so tough, odds probably aren't good of developing enough true hitting to make it to majors. But, that might help to explain a lot, and to justify unusual patience with the development. Again, thanks much for your insights.

Victorino was hit on the right leg by a pitch in his 7th and final PA and hobbled off the field.

Erling Moreno: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, 1 HBP, 1 GIDP, 4/2 GO/AO, 48 pitches (28 strikes) 
P. J. Francescon: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 1/0 GO/AO, 10 pitches (8 strikes) 

SQUAD "B" 
Jake Buchanan: 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 8/0 GO/AO, 50 pitches (28 strikes) 
Jesus Castillo: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 2/0 GO/AO, 15 pitches (8 strikes)

Buchanan (signed by the Cubs to a minor league contract after he was released by the Astros at the end of ST) was a ground ball machine today (8/0 GO/AO), combining an 88-89 MPH two-seamer with a plus-curve and change-up. He should be ready to go to AAA Iowa whenever there is room for him there. 

Moreno's fastball was consistently 89-91 and he had difficulty commanding his curve and change-up. Even though he is 6'7, Moreno never threw particularly hard even before the TJS (his velocity today is typical for him), so he has to command his secondary stuff to be successful.  

Francescon and Griggs are both at EXST while serving 50-game drug suspensions (Francescon tested positive for the so-called "Drug of Abuse," and Griggs tested positive for Amphetamine). This was the first 2016 game actiion for both pitchers, because they were not permitted to participate in Minor League Camp (although they are active at Extended Spring Training and can pitch in both intrasquad games and Cactus League EXST games). 

Prior to the intrasquad game, RHP (ex-OF) Wander Feliz, RHP (ex-INF) Francisco Garay, RHP Hector Garcia, LHP Pablo Ochoa, LHP Eugenio Palma, and RHP Andri Rondon threw two innings a piece of "live" BP (30 pitches - 15 pitches each inning). These six pitchers arrived late to Minor League Camp and are behind the other pitchers at EXST.

    The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

    I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

    i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

    there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

    I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.
