Russell & Alzolay Lookin' Good at Riverview

Addison Russell singled twice, stole two bases, and scored a run, Jonathan Soto collected three singles and drove-in a run, Carlos Morfa singled twice, scored a run, and knocked-in another, and Rafael Mejia belted a two-run HR, leading the Cubs "B" team to a 6-3 victory over the Athletics Green squad in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Wednesday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

The Cubs stole six bases in the game.

RHP Adbert Alzolay (on AAA Iowa 7-day IL with a lat strain) saw his first game action of 2019, getting the start and working 1.2 IP. He allowed one run on two hits (a double and a single) and no walks, with four strikeouts. He got eleven swings & misses among his 34 pitches, mixing a 95-96 MPH FB with an effective CV.

The game was pre-planned as a seven-inning contest but was extended an extra half-inning so that all of the Cubs pitchers who were scheduled to throw could get their work.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

cj edwards on the AAA IL (7d) after "scraping his hand" after a fall.

The Cubs have released INF Ignacio Otano (his eligibility to play in the DSL has expired and so he was expected to attend EXST, but he was not invited).

The Cubs signed Otano in June 2017 as a second-contract player after he was released by the Brewers, and he spent the 2017 & 2018 seasons playing for the Cubs in the DSL.

AZ Phil, I seem to recall that Carlos Morfa impressed you with his power at instructs. How does he look this spring as far as his development as a hitter? Does he have a chance to open the year in Eugene?

BRADSBEARD: Carlos Morfa is a very raw 18-year old five-tool outfielder, so he will almost certainly be assigned to a Cubs AZL team in 2019. BTW, he looks like he's been working out at Muscle Beach. He's really ripped.

a.mills back with the AAA team...started last night

4ip 8h 0bb 3k, 1r/er

Oscar De La Cruz is starting for Myrtle Beach tonight.

TIM: Because Oscar de la Cruz is serving an 80-game suspension and is on an MLB Restricted List, he is eligible to spend up to 15 days (unpaid, but with an MLB meal & tip per diem) on a minor league conditioning assignment prior to being reinstated.

In his last EXST outing last Friday vs Giants Black, ODLC threw 4.1 IP and 79 pitches, so he is fully stretched-out and ready to roll.

Because his suspension is less than 50 days, Addison Russell in entitled to only a 12-day minor league conditioning assignment prior to being reinstated from the Restricted List.

Phil,

When ODLC goes to AA, what's their rotation?

Abbott, Hatch, Miller, Thompson, ODLC and Steele piggybacking?

If so, that's a pretty "prospectie" crew!!

CHILDERSb3: That sounds about right, or the Cubs might rotate starting pitchers back & forth from the active roster to the 7-day IL (unlike MLB, a doctor's certification is not required to place a minor league player on the IL), or the Cubs might move a minor league SP down a level so that everybody can get regular work, or the Cubs could go with a six-man starting rotation and eight-man bullpen at one or more of the full-season affiliates and play games a man short on the bench.

If the cardinals loose and the giants win, the cardinals will have to play and win on Monday to make the playoffs.

JACKSTRAW: The Cardinals & Tigers will only play the first game of Monday's doubleheader (and it will be a seven-inning game) if what needs to be determined is determined by the result of the first game (the second game will be canceled), but they won't play the games at all (and the Cardinals won't go to Detroit) if everything that is affected by the two missing STL games is settled and resolved by end of MLB play on Sunday.

I don't know if the math works out but (at least to me) it raises the possibility that they would play one game on Monday and if that decided what was left that they'd skip game 2.

The Cardinals have to play the doubleheader on Monday at Detroit if either the games impact who or who does not get into the playoffs, or if the games will determine whether the Cards or Cubs finish 1st in the division and get home field advantage in the Wild Card series.

Maybe he should stick with it for a while.

Cardinals have two games left with Detroit, not the Cubs.

  • blockhead25 1 day 8 hours ago (view)

Ahh, 2 games against the Tigers, but seems to imply they'd only play those games if it will impact which teams make the playoffs.  If the Cardinals win their last 2, I don't believe the other games could impact which Team makes it.  Why would Detroit have any incentive to win those games?  Well, hope the Cubs won one of the next 2 so it doesn't matter.

yeah, it may be another team.  i just know they have a possible monday double header...unless i got that wrong, too.

  • blockhead25 1 day 9 hours ago (view)

Cubs?  We played the cards the full 10 slate?

if Cards make playoffs, I would think they'd want nothing to do with having to play a double header Monday to improve playoff seeding.

the cubs may or may not have to play a doubleheader vs STL on monday depending on the next game or 2...i think
