Thursday predicted high at 44 degrees. Cubs have mitten giveaways to the first 40,000 thru the turnstiles

Game cancelled, so let's look at some early-season stats.

Incredibly, Jason Heyward is getting worse.  His current OPS is .584, compared to .631 his first year with the Cubs and .715 in his "rebound" year.  He has a remarkable .358 OPS vs. LHP.   That's not his batting average, or OBP.. That's OPS. He has 2 XBH in 58 PA.  The facts are just brutal.  I realize he's a terrific RF, a good guy and a great teammate.  But, they need to get him out of the lineup on a regular basis.   He is killing them offensively. If nothing else, he should never play against LHP.

zobrist can play there a bit, but what he's doing now may very well only be a streak...and his current (hopefully minor) injury reminds us of his age. there's nothing in the minors. the guys manning the corners in AAA that could play RF (zagunis and rademacherururerer) are low-power bench types as a ceiling. they may be useful one day, but i dunno if anyone would want to see them get 300-400PA. bote has seen some time in RF in AA and below, but it seems he's yet to play any OF in AAA this season. the AA OF talent isn't anything worth mentioning... i think we're in for quite a bit more heyward for the foreseeable future unless zobrist is "for real" in 2018 and can stay healthy.

Thinking along the same lines -- assuming Heyward continues as he has for the past 2+ years, there is a big bet on Happ, as Joe doesn't seem to like Almora. If Happ continues to struggle, this team's offense could be in real trouble. They no longer have an OBP guy to put at the top of the order (Fowler in 2015/6, Jay at .374 OBP in 433 PAs last year), unless the soon-to-be-37-year-old Zobrist has found the fountain of youth. And, as you say, no help in the minors. They are good enough to carry one good-field-no-hit player, but more than one could be a problem (and Happ isn't good-field).

Riggs is Managing again! Jim Riggleman named interim manager of the Reds as of today.

Very nice W before heading to Colorado!  Other than Butler and some sloppy defense, good game all around.  Hopefully Lester can get the rotation on a roll, although Coors is a tough place to do that.  Be sure to bring those hot bats on the trip!

Jake dealing so far vs. the Pirates (sound familiar?): 5IP, 1H, 8K, 0R.

Update: Done with 7IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB and 10K.

A tale of two starters, both possible Cubs this year.

Jake: 2.04 ERA after 3 starts.

Cobb: 15+ ERA, 12ER and 20H in 7IP, 3.14 WHIP after 2 starts.

Eh...win some, lose some.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
