Brewers @ Cubs: Jungmann vs Arrieta (Game 21)

For his next trick, watch Jake pull a rabbit out of his hat.

MIL (8-12): RHP Taylor Jungmann (0-3, 8.47)
CHC (15-5): RHP Jake Arrieta (4-0, 0.87)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Arrieta only pitched a no-hitter on Thursday in Cincinnati—his second. He didn’t have his best stuff, he said afterward, which meant he walked four. The Brewers are 25-89 (.281) against him, which is obviously not going to continue. Hill is 7-17 with a HR, and Braun and his dealer are 4-10 with a HR.

Jungmann lost to the lowly Twins his last time out (3 ER, 4 IP, 2 Ks, 6 BBs). He was 4-6 with a 5.02 on the road last year. The Cubs are 11-30 (.367) against him. Russell is 3-4, and Soler is 3-5.

Blair (0-1, 5:06) and the Braves vs Lester (2-1, 1.98) open the weekend set tomorrow at 1:20pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

Jungmann gave up 6 walks in 4 innings to the Twins? The Cubs lineup will have a field day with this guy.

Video game numbers thought: Dexter Fowler already has amassed 2.0 WAR according to Fangraphs. Puts him on pace for like 16 if it were possible to sustain that for a whole year.

Another nasty day here in Chicago -- walks will be key tot he offense.

Jake gets another shot at Johnny Vandermeer mlb headlines get cute: Former Cub Pen Pals. Samardzija vs Cashner

Arrieta tells Stephen A. Smith to shove it...

Arrieta is the kale shake-drinking type. Good luck trying to get him to put a pharmaceutical like anabolic steroids in his body. The whole thing is stupid.

In today's baseball environment for people who haven't closely followed Arietta career I think it is valid to have steroid suspicions about anyone who suddenly comes out of nowhere to dominate. We've simply seen too many people get caught for it who long denied it. Now with Arietta he's always had his stuff and pitch speed and he's been that buff even when he was bad, it was just lack of control and the different delivery that was different and he's back to the pitching mechanics he had as a kid. So yes I do completely believe he is clean but I'm not naive enough to be shocked by anyone cheating at this point. Still Stephen A is a jackass and deserves to always get called out.

If Arrieta were caught, I would burn this blog down and find another sport. The Badminton Reporter, anyone?

Bleed Badminton Blue? No? :)

montero out again

South Bend Cubs already rained out tonight. Not sure it means much for the north side of Chicago.

I'm concerned with tomorrow as me and my family have plans to travel to Chicago for the game... Hmm...

Ryno- Are you driving in for the game?

Yes. Weather looks to be maybe a go for tomorrow's back to back Arrieta no hitter.

NFL draft is going on at Grant park, be mindful of the traffic on Lake Shore Drive. Also park at recreation drive off of LSD, it's free meter parking until May 31. Go under tunnel on LSD and you will be at Addison.

The South Bend game was scheduled for 1:00 pm. The storm blew threw the Quad Cities and it's cold now, but warmer than Wrigley was, last night. Same storm just now hitting Chicago.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs decide to cancel the game beforehand to not risk just having a partial Arietta start.

Accuweather saying 70+% chance of rain 8PM through the middle of the night. Seems likely this one doesn't get any real momentum if it even starts. Boo. Real bummer to get worked up for an Arrieta start and then have to wait another day for baseball.

raul ibanez replaces schilling's role at ESPN. hopefully he doesn't have a severely reactive victim mentality or a need to receive 10s of millions of government money he's not going to pay back while bitching about others getting a couple hundred a week to pay for rent, medicine, and food. if he can manage to be an ESPN personality that doesn't get suspended at least once a year he'll be doing just fine. john kruk has managed to do it for years while achieving an impressive level of not giving a fuck about his job while not putting any effort into it.

game postponed...thanks obama. no makeup date announced.

Miserable, wet Chicago April evening. Please don't endanger Arietta- good luck tomorrow.

That was on crazy top of the first -- a single, two walks, 3 stolen bases -- and no runs.

Time to start the not-at-all-tongue-in-cheek David Ross for All-Star write-in campaign.

I'm gonna vote for Castillo so Molina doesn't get it but Ross has caught something in his last year and I'm loving it. He seems like an incredible guy who everyone on this team loves and if he can just be average with his bat that'd be huge this year.

How bad was Bryant's ankle sprain?

Don't see anything on the replay showing where he rolled it and he played for 2 more innings after so at first glance it so doesn't seem major. Very cold today so any discomfort is probably amplified.

Rolled scoring on Rizzo double

Re ZOBRIST - Today's game is what I was referring to re Zobrist and RISP struggles. He did come through with his patented single to drive in a run - but also left the bases loaded, and two men on, no outs (called 3rd). So, I hope he can pick that part of his game up when they start playing the better teams...

Cubs did a lot of that today: 2-for-17 with RISP. Man, what an ugly baseball game - Cubs receive 11 walks and Bryant reached twice by HBP, the Brewers pitchers threw almost 200 pitches (199 8 innings!), they even walked Baez (first one of the year), Cubs scored twice when Brewers botched routine DP balls, Cahill walks three guys with a 6-run lead, forcing Maddon to waste Strop, the weather sucked again, etc. Happy with the win, but that was really tough to watch.

It is hard to blieve that Corey Black is still around. Why?

Remember, the Cubs have until 5 PM (Eastern) on - SUNDAY - to decide whether to add any of the 25 minor leaguers who are eligible to be Rule 55 minor league second contract free-agents or 6YFA to the MLB 40-man roster, sign the player to a 2021 minor league successor contract, or allow the player to walk. (Some -- perhaps even most -- of the 25 have no doubt already signed successor contracts - TBD).

The Cubs have claimed 2B-3B-LF Max Schrock off waivers from the St. Loius Cardinals, and LHRP Rex Brothers has been sent outright to AAA Iowa.

If Brothers doesn't elect free-agency immediately, he will be automatically declared an MLB Rule 55 minor league 6YFA on Sunday at 5 PM Eastern, unless he agrees to sign a 2021 minor league successor contract).

Brothers is out of minor league options and he is arbitation-eligible post-2020, so he was likely to be non-tendered on 12/2 anyway.

    K-DUB: It's pronounced "MAH - day"

"Jon Lester said in an interview on SiriusXM Friday that he's had conversations with president of baseball operations Theo Epstein "about getting something done, coming back and being a part of the organization." " about no?  i mean, thanks for those 3 good seasons in your first 4 years as a cub...but after those last

also, the cubs claimed 2nd/3rd max schrock off waivers from STL (no power, bit of speed, slow to react in the IF even though the glove isn't bad).  meh.

Cubs had a prospect named Jose Made (also Dominican) between 2007-2009. I believe his name was pronounced like the verb "made".

  • tim815 14 hours 29 min ago (view)

    I lean two syllables.

He was Dominican-born, so Mah-day would have made sense, but that's a good Q.

PHIL: How is Kevin Made's last name pronounced? Is it mah-day? Or like it's spelled - made? Thanks!

Brewers decline Ryan Braun's option. Any predictions as to where he goes?

KBO (korea) ends their season tomorrow.

a.russell started off hot, but severely cooled off to a .253/.317/.336 slash (not counting today's game).  if he comes back to the US (and finds a team that wants to sign him), it should be rather cheap.

my dream of seeing s.castro end his career with 3000+ hits and a WAR in the mid-30s, making HOF voters sweat, came to an end this year with the shortened season followed by the early injury.  he came into the year as a just-turned 30 year old (march 24) with 1617 hits.

Jerry Reinsdorf is reasons 1 thru 100 why I could never root for the White Sox and have hated the Bulls since 1999.

Feels like Ricky and Starlin Castro should form a support group.  Everytime your rebuilding team is about to turn the corner and you're gone.

76 yr old Tony LaRussa to manage the W/Sox. Reinsdorf decision over objections.

Poor Rick Renteria. History repeats itself, NOPE. This won't end well (except for bring your dog day).

but, but, but we're rounding the corner. The vaccine is warming up in the bullpen. Tucker's missing email package from Rudy is just lost in the mail. There are no pee-pee tapes. Corona, corona, corona. I like beer.   ...and the DeutchBank will just forgive billions of MLB owner's debt if they ask nicely. How are the Russian minor leagues looking this year Phil?
