Attaway, Alzolay!
As if to demonstrate that his recent Triple A debut was not a fluke, and that perhaps its mediocre follow-up was the aberration, prized prospect Adbert Alzolay again took a no-hitter into the 6th inning last night. AA was removed after seven despite having thrown only 80 pitches en route to walking two and fanning six, including the side in his last frame of work, all three swinging. It was not a pitcher’s night at Principal Park. A 25 mph gale was blowing out and the I-Cubs rode it to the tune of five homers. Mike Freeman, #3 in your program, same as The Babe, went for the hat trick after entering the game homerless for a team that began the night with a record of 4-17. Freeman also nearly preserved Alzolay’s no-no with a sparkling play at shortstop, but he was unable to throw out Raul Mondesi’s kid at first. As noted after Alzolay’s Des Moines debut, he works quickly. The game was barely 90 minutes old when he was yanked before slowing to a crawl in the 8th and 9th. Despite not joining the team until April 20, Alzolay has now accounted for 40% of the victories by winning two of his three starts. His next one will be back on the road and it will be just fine if he doesn’t continue to save his best stuff for the home fans who've seen him throw 13 innings (155 pitches), allow 3 hits, give up a lone run, walk 4 and whiff 12.
