Cubs @ Reds: Darvish vs. Gray (Game 40

CHC (25-14): RHP Yu Darvish (2-3, 5.40 ERA)
CIN (18-24): RHP Sonny Gray (0-4, 4.15 ERA)
First pitch 5:40pmCDT

We're roughly a quarter of the way through this season. The Cubs are in first, Bryant is back on track, Baez and Contreras still look like All-Stars, and Hendricks has found his groove.

Darvish, however, still has no command of his pitches. The movement and velocity on his pitches remains great, but he misses the zone frequently and by wide margins. Batters' swing rates against him are down, 41.2% this year vs. 44.9% in his career. We haven't really seen him get batters to chase in his time as a Cub. He's gotten 26.6% and 26% chase rates this year and last vs. rates right around 30% in his years in Texas. Last time out, he was limited to four innings despite allowing only one run due to the combination of 6 walks and 7 strikeouts. There's almost no history between him and Reds' hitters, but Cincinnati's not a good place to struggle with walks.

Sonny Gray's been solid in 2019, improving on his strikeouts, groundouts, and homerun rate compared to 2018 with Yankees. His command has slipped a bit in the last two starts. On May 8, he went 4.1 against the Athletics allowing 5 walks and getting 3 strikeouts. Current Cubs are 2-14 against him with 1 strikeout and no walks.

NBC Sports reporting Zobrist's leave of absence is due to divorce filings -- kind of what's been speculated but still sucks to hear.  So far story is that Zobrist filed for legal separation in Tennessee and Julianna filed for divorce in Chicago.  The separation filing from Ben says that Julianna "has been guilty of inappropriate marital conduct which render further cohabitation impossible."

so....no more of that stupid benny beeeeeeeeenny benny song on walkup?

as a fan who watches a lot of cubs games, this is a win.

as a human being, this is sad.

i choose to feel both emotions.

Bad news that the relationship was going poorly. The divorce itself might be good news for those involved.

La Stella with a 4 hit day in the Angels 7-8 loss to the Twins — also hit his 11th home run of the season. 11 homers and only 8 Ks.  Could use that bat with Rizzo and Zobrist out ... but there’s Descalso! <crickets>

that deadly trout/lastella combo...

it's a shame their pitching is criminally bad outside of a few pen arms.

about 12 people in attendance for today's game.

yeah, this darvish/taylor thing isn't working again...5 pitches into the game.

pitch 8 wasn't any better...

or pitch 46...which was a pitchout...geez.

a.russell hits his first woman, i mean HR, of the season.

5.1ip 5h 0bb 11k, 2r/er for darvish

he leaves with no men on, but 102 pitches.  a few more deep counts than would be comfortable, but still a nice performance.

If I replace the name Yu Darvish with Rich Harden during Darvish’s starts I think I’d feel better about things. With the added bonus that this version of Harden didn‘t require the trade of a future MVP prospect like the Cubs provided the A’s in Josh Donaldson.

well...that movie sucked.  let's slash the seats.

1st extra inning loss for the cubs.

Oh well. Bullpen to a man not so good tonight. And the Cardinals lost. Yu with 11 Ks and no walks - lose the battle but win the war?

freddy freeman + aaron nola are also positive star players.

the scary thing is freeman tested negative on tuesday.  by thursday he was sick and tested positive shortly afterwards.  some may question the strength of the MLB test if they were the ones who gave freeman's initial negative...

d.price (LAD) to sit out the season.

LAD isn't going to get d.price at all in 2020 and they got m.betts for 60-ish games until he's a FA.  ow.  that duo cost them jeter downs, alex verdugo, and connor wong.

I acquired Trout over the winter in a keeper league. Not feeling too great about that either.

the cleveland indians have released a statement that they are open for dialogue about the future of the team's name.

twitter is all over it and seems to be all about going back to "cleveland spiders", an unrelated dead MLB team lineage in cleveland from the 1800s (some guy named cy young played for them).

Q coming back in 4-6 weeks will be like a mid-season trade!  sigh...

but yeah, they should be good in-house with expanded rosters unless they get slammed by IL stuff.

MLB has confirmed 38 positives (players/coaches/personel/etc) so far.

With 17 pitchers likely on the 30-man MLB Active List roster for the first two weeks and then probably 15 pitchers on the 28-man Active List for the next two weeks after that, the Cubs should be able to "bullpen" games quite a bit for the first month. They won't really need five starters.

the cubs were searching car seats for coins to sign the scraps they managed to get this offseason.  i imagine doing everything "in house" might be on the table.

the ricketts will need all the money they can spare to dump into GOP elections, too.  priorities.  btw, yes the family has been dumping 100s of thousand (to the tune of millions combined) over the past few months into state elections in areas they don't live in.  wisconsin, nevada, new york, georgia, etc...millions...many millions of dollars all over the country.

jdrnym: Once the MLB regular season starts, the "Practice Squad" will be a sub-group of the Club Player Pool, as will be the MLB Active List roster and the various MLB injured lists.

All makes sense, but I think there is one important point of clarification in there -- are you using "practice squad" and "Club Player Pool" interchangeably? If so, I understood the first sentence of your third-to-last paragraph above to mean that Mills/Sadler/Underwood could be outrighted and still be in the Pool, therefore retaining their eligibility to re-selected to the major league active roster later in the season.
