Cubs vs. Phillies: Lester vs. Nola (Game 48)

CHC: LHP Jon Lester (3-2, 2.09 ERA)
PHL: RHP Aaron Nola (4-0, 4.47 ERA)
First pitch 1:20pmCDT

The Cubs hitched their wagon to a pair of big homeruns for last night's 8-4 win. Today they send Jon Lester to the hill to lock down a series victory. Lester was thoroughly out-pitched by Strasburg on Saturday when I had the privilege of attending a fairly uneventful Cubs' loss in DC. He got knocked around for 10 hits and 5 runs in 4.1 innings, easily his worst start of the season. As worst starts go, it's the least bad worst start of any Cubs' starter! Hence, he has maintained an ERA just over 2. Current Phillies have seen him for 162 ABs and earned an OPS of .738 during that time. Sean Rodriguez has 55 of those ABs, with 12 hits, 3 of which were homeruns. McCutchen is 7-32 with 2 HRs. Harper is 3-10 with 6 strikeouts.

Aaron Nola has been a bit off his game in the first quarter of the season, posting a slightly inflated walk rate and allowing a lot more hard contact than he had in the last couple of years. That said, there's only been one clunker in his last five starts and he struck out 12 in 6 innings against the Rockies last time out. Cubs hitters haven't seen that much of Nola, but Rizzo is 2-6 with 2 HRs and put out a light in that hideous beer sign last night to tie Javy at 12. Bryant is 2-7 with 5 strikeouts and recent leadoff man, Schwarber, is 2-8 with 4 strikeouts.

Enjoy surreptitiously following this day game on the job, nine-to-fivers!

i guess we're in for 2-20 random games of "pitcher hits 8th" before suddenly deciding that's not a thing anymore...again

wow baez...also, wow rizzo.

call overturned, but that was a hell of an "almost" play.

Bullpen reclamation project Kyle Ryan’s ERA now 5.06. Bummer

RIP heyward's bat.

shout out to bo jackson...that was a clean break.

it was a swing/miss with no contact so it's doubtful it was a cracked bat.

omfg chatwood...with the bat.

aww...cubs were a pest all game, but couldn't overcome.

tommy lastella hit his 12th homer of the year...grand slam.

And Joe pinch hits for Descalso again today - now 205/277/316 on the year. But no need to put a jumpy-jump in the parking lot during spring training like they did last year for TLS so it balances out.

Robel Garcia 14 games (53 PA) since being sent back to Iowa on 8/1: 209/358/349, one HR, two doubles, two RBI, one SB, 10 BB (19% BB rate), 17 K (32% K rate), so Dixon Machado (an MLB-quality SS) could replace Garcia on the 40 sooner rather than later.

I did 3/4 of a PhD in Ames, IA... no need to apologize. That's time that can jade anybody. The best parts of my years there were 1) Cubs on local AM radio (pre cell network streaming) so I could listen to them on a run, and 2) being able to go see the I-cubs whenever I wanted. Was at a game there on July 4, 2007 & I saw a guy sitting 1 section over, a couple rows up and I thought "that looks like Barack Obama". Turns out it was the whole Obama family... Gotta love IA in a pre-caucus year.

Magic # = 7 after Colin Rea labors to 13th win vs. baby Brewers (at expense of Jimmy Nelson) & Memphis loses. No sign of Zobrist. Almora runs hitting streak to 2 games. Jim Adduci = a pro’s pro; guy’s a ball player by trade...

David Bote sent down to Iowa today prior to Cishek’s activation off the IL tomorrow — nice of the Cubs do their part to help the I-Cubs down the stretch

never really considered how that might be cool for people used to seeing those midwest fields as an everyday occurance.  in the south-east US you rarely see the vastly massive acerage of farm-against-farm-against-farm-etc...

also, i spent a good amount of time out in corn fields in ames, iowa in my last job.  everyone wanted to go work the research fields in hawaii, but we always ended up in iowa.

Hey, I'm pretty excited about the Field of Dreams game.  I grew up on a farm in middle of nowhere Iowa and my brother and I spent a lot of time trying to hit baseballs into a corn field.  I'm seriously considering coming back next summer from Texas to go to that game if prices aren't super stupid expensive.  Added bonus, I won't have to listen to A-Rod and Mendoza ignorantly discussing corn and no, you don't eat field corn like you would sweet corn.

That is truly staggering. Shame on the rest of the Central that we are only one loss behind the pissboys, we should have been buried by now with that kind of stat.

...and strop gives up a hit then walks the bases loaded.

...and he closes it out with a K.  neat.

this is the 1st cubs road series win since May 17-19 @WAS.

strop comes in to get the last out, but it has to be some kinda slow-walk back in a game that wasn't a save situation.

    homer, hbp, k, k...looks healthy.

one takeaway from this game...a slew of cubs players were fans of Hey Arnold! when they were kids.
