Garvey Three-Run Bomb Propels Rockies to Win over Cubs at Fitch Park

Ryan Garvey belted a three-run HR onto 8th Street with two outs in the top of the 8th inning to put the Rockies up 7-4, and then they hung-on to defeat the Cubs 8-6 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Fitch Park Field #4 in Mesa, AZ.

Jared Simon doubled twice, singled, stole a base, drove-in three runs, and scored another, and Correlle Prime singled three times and stole two bases for the Rockies.

Reggie Golden laced a two-run double and an RBI single for the Cubs.

Steve Clevenger (strained oblique rehab) played 3rd base for five innings and batted four times, hitting once in each of the first four innings. He singled in his first two AB, and then grounded out his last two times up. Clevenger is on the Cubs MLB 60-day DL, and is at Extended Spring Training preparing for an upcoming minor league rehab assignment at either AAA Iowa or AA Tennessee. WEATHER: Sunny & breezy with temperatures in the 90's

NOTE: It wasn't a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game, but the Cubs did play an intrasquad game at Fitch Park yesterday (Thursday) morning.

25-year old lanky 6'3 Cuban RHP Armando Rivero saw his first EXST game action in the intrasquad game, and allowed one run on one hit (a single) and two walks. He retired only one batter, and was relieved after throwing 19 pitches (only ten strikes). A former closer for Industriales in Serie Nacional (the Cuban major league), Rivero was signed by the Cubs ($3.1M bonus) this past March after defecting to the Dominican Republic (and then migrating to Haiti) last year.

20-year old Mexican LHP David Villegas also made his EXST game debut in yesterday's intrasquad game, throwing two innings (31 pitches) and allowing one run on three hits. He struck out one, and did not issue any walks. Villegas was purchased by the Cubs from Las Olmecas de Tabasco (Mexican League) last Summer as part of the deal where the Cubs loaned RHP Yoanner Negrin to Tabasco. The Cubs also loaned catcher Sergio Burruel to Tabasco this season, and ex-Cub OF Nelson Perez signed with Tabasco after being released by the Cubs during Spring Training, so don't be surprised to see more transactions between the two clubs in the future.

19-year old RHP Paul Blackburn (selected by the Cubs with the 2012 Supplemental 1st round draft pick they received after MLB Article XX-B FA 1B Carlos Pena signed with TB) was hit hard, allowing five runs (all five ER) on eight hits (including five doubles) in three innings of work.

Steve Clevenger stroked two RBI doubles, drew a walk, and scored two runs, Carlos Penalver singled, doubled, and smacked a two-run HR, and Kevin Encarnacion singled twice, doubled, stole a base, and scored three runs, to provide the offensive highlights.

Erick Castillo left the game after being struck on the left ankle with a pitch.

Here is the box score from yesterday's intrasquad game:

Hot Sheet Chat: What is Jorge Soler's upside and or MLB comp? Thanks Jim Shonerd: Scouts do worry about his swing mechanics a bit, but overall he’s got plenty of power and blends it with a feel for hitting. His offense was in a bit of funk after he got back from his suspension, but now he’s hitting .324 in May and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him end the year in Double-A. After a rough couple weeks for Jeimer Candelario has really started to turn it around, he has cut down his K rate and increased his already good bb rate, he seems to be hitting a lot of double with next to no home run power however. Do you see the Hrs starting to come as his body matures? Jim Shonerd: Yeah, scouts can project him developing average power down the road. He’s got the frame and bat speed for it, just needs to get stronger. Arisemendy Alcantara seems to have a decent bit of pop for such a slender frame, is this due to good bat speed or cheating on AA fastballs? How does his power and hit project at the major league level? Jim Shonerd: Getting a lot of Cubs questions today. Alcantara does have some power. Nothing spectacular, but enough to believe his numbers aren’t a fluke. The key for him is improving his patience, and he has made some progress there. He’s still not exactly a beacon of selectivity, but his 16 walks in 45 games this year almost matches the 19 he drew in 85 games last year. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-hot-sheet-chat-with-jim-…

Phil, Will you give us a scouting report on the young Latino pitchers at Fitch. Do any of them impress? Thanks.

scott feldman 2r HR (1st career) ...cubs pitchers are rather awesome hitters this season. a few doubles, a couple homers...15 rbis for cubs pitchers. cubs up 3-0, top 2nd.

0-7 with 3K soriano vs chapman brought on to pinch hit with 2 on, 2 out, in the 9th. make that 0-8 with 4K...cubs lose by 3. ...not like there was much better options, fwiw. meh.

I have a couple advertising related questions. One regards this site. Who names their small business insurance company HISCOX? WTH is wrong with people? I guess it's better than HERCOX. And the other is the Cubs games. I guess I've been away from Chicago too long, but, "The Fifth Third Bank?" What kind of a name is that? But worse is the tagline. "The Curious Bank." I guess it works if you're looking for memorable advertising, but I don't want to do business with a curious bank, to be honest. My bank has plenty of information about me. Okay, back to our regularly scheduled programming. Oh, and a note to the JedStein: FIX IT!!!!!! Thanks.

I thought the only real insurance was sold when the dealer is showing an ace.

is TCR main page formatting broken or just me? first it was formatting on the right side bar for a few days, now it's degraded into that + grey background page color in a frame for a few days. -edit- nevermind...just checked with another browser, pretty sure it's not just me. was just wondering cuz no one's brought it up.

The whole formatting thing is all messed up in Firefox for me too. Been like that since early last week or so. Note to Rob: On individual story pages, like this one, everything is fine, the background is (white) and the sidebars are fine, etc. But on the main page, the background is grey and the side bars are WAY down on the page and not aligned correctly (like I have to scroll down past 6-7 stories to finally see the recent comments bar).

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

    cards put j.young on waivers.

they really tried to make it happen this spring, but he put up a crazy bad slash of .081/.244/.108 in 45PA.
