Rockies Rock Cubs Boat at Riverview

Luis Paredes drilled an RBI double, singled twice, walked,and scored a run, Francisco Garcia doubled and scored, laced an RBI single, and collected another RBI on a bases-loaded walk, Cuba Bess slugged a solo HR, and SP Luis Urena (ex-MIA) and six reiievers combined to hurl a five-hit shutout, as the Rockies blanked the Cubs 9-0 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Tuesday morning on Field #1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ. 

South Bend RHP Zac Leigh continued his EXST rehab with a scoreless 1-2-3 nine-pitch inning, throwing nothing but his high octane 95-98 MPH FB. 

In EXST Cubs roster news, RHRP Angel Gonzalez (2020 NDFA - Puerto Rico) has been moved up to Myrtle Beach. Gonzalez features a 96-98 MPH FB that was up to 99 in his final EXST outing last week and a 87-89 MPH SL, and was projected to be the EXST Cubs closer if he hadn't been moved-up to the Pelicans.

Phil,

I apologize for not being knowledgable enough to find this answer on my own, but when is the earliest date that Alec Mills can come off the 60 day IL? I know he can have a long rehab as well, so my second question is what is his latest date he could come off the 60IL? So, what's his return date range? I trying to figure out if it's even 40man roster possible/plausible for Kilian to get added to 40 to pitch next Monday vs Brewers.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

I believe the first day he'd be eligible to return is 6/7. He went on the IL 4/7, and I don't recall it being backdated.

childersb3: Because he was not placed on the 60-day IL prior to MLB Opening Day, Alec Mills does - NOT - have to spend the first 60 days of the MLB regular season on the IL before he would be eligible to be reinstated.

Mills was placed on the MLB 10-day IL on April 4th (three days prior to MLB Opening Day, which is the earliest a player can be placed on the 10-day IL) but wasn't transferred to the 60-day IL until May 19th, so the three days he spent on the 10-day IL prior to MLB Opening Day count toward the minimum 60-days.

Therefore, Mills will be eligible to be reinstated from the 60-day IL on June 3rd. If he had been placed on the 60-day IL or transferred to the 60-day IL prior to MLB Opening Day he would have had to spend the first 60 days of the MLB regular season on the 60-day IL and would not have been eligible to be reinstated until June 6th (as is the case with David Bote, Adbert Alzolay, Codi Heuer, and Brad Wieck, who were placed on th 60-day IL prior to MLB Opening Day). 

Mills could theoretically remain on the 60-day IL and not be reinstated until the 5th day after the final game of the World Series, if the Cubs so choose. Unlike being on the 7-day day concussion Il, the 10-day IL (for position players) and the 15 day IL (for pitchers and "two way" players), a 60-day IL assignment does - NOT - have to be periodically re-certified by a doctor once the player is on the 60-day IL. (BTW, Mills was placed on the 10-day IL instead of the 15 day IL on 4/4 because pitchers and two-way players were permitted to be placed on the 10-day IL instead of the 15-day IL through May 1st).  

The problem with keeping a player on the 60-day IL indefinitely is that the player could file a grievamce if he  doesn't wish to remain on the 60-day IL once he is healthy enough to play. It depends on the player, and whether he actually wants to be reinstated, or is satisfied not playing while accruing MLB Service Time and being paid big league money.

It'll be real interesting to see who remains in Chicago and who gets DFA'd. Some will be Optioned of course. It'll be unfortunate for Morel but he'll go to Iowa. One or two of Frazier, Herm and/or Bote seem to have to go. Looks like Higgins gets to keep his 40man spot. Gsellman, Menez, Rucker, Leiter, Roberts, of course Hughes, and maybe Mills will go down or get waived. 

All of this coming in early to Mid Junez then the Trade deadline deals coming in July. 

Jed's got some serious moves to decide on here

Well Rossy says Kilian isn't coming up for either of these double headers. So, it'll be Leiter if Mills isn't ready. Maybe Keegan starts but Leiter will pitch. There just isn't much to hope for with Mr. Leiter. He doesn't have any deception, velocity, unique repertoire, etc to be effective. Oh well, maybe he'll do okay.

I'd really rather they call-up Espinoza since he's already on the 40man. Give him a chance. Again, oh well

As noted yesterday, when veteran utility man Ildemaro Vargas was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa by the Chicago Cubs, he had the right to elect free agency instead of accepting the assignment, by virtue of having been outrighted before in his career (a guy can be outrighted only once without his permission). This time around, Vargas did not accept the assignment, and has elected free agency.

Hey Phil - I saw that you said the Cubs will have two AZL teams this year (or was it DSL teams)? My question is, do the Cubs have two teams in BOTH the Arizona and Dominican Summer Leagues? Thanks!

Thanks Phil - At my count, there are around 80 players in Arizona. I know that some of them are on the 40-man roster, some are on AAA, AA, or A rosters, but I imagine that there are more than 35 players that will need to be put onto the Arizona League roster (I think 35 is the max roster size - 30 active). Will the rest of the players need to be released, or will some be assigned to other levels and just stay inactive? Forgive me if this is explained somewhere else! :) Thanks! (I can't seem to find Josh Burgmann.)

W-RAT: It used to be a 35-man maximum roster imit in the old AZL, but there is no maximum roster limit in the ACL, except as the roster is affected by the aggregate minor league 180-man Domestic Reserve List limit in effect beginning on minor league Opening Day in April up until 5 PM Eastern on the 5th day following the final game of rthe World Series. 

The DSL has a 35-man maximum roster limit if an organization has one DSL team and a 70-man aggregate maximum limit (both squads combined) if an organization is running two DSL teams (as the Cubs are doing).

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.
