Cubs @ Pirates: Lester vs Kingham (Game 51)

CHC (28-22): LHP Jon Lester (4-2, 2.37)
PIT (28-25): RHP Nick Kingham (2-1, 3.44)
First pitch: 6:05pmCST

Lester took the loss against the Indians at Wrigley on Wednesday (7 IP, 1 ER). He gave up 4 ER in 5 innings for a no-decision in Pittsburgh on April 11. Overall, these Pirates are 55-25 (.268) against him. Mercer is 7-24 with a HR.

Kingham is in for Nova, who was placed on the DL yesterday with a sprained finger. The 26y/o Texan Kingham lost to the Padres his last time out (6 IP, 3 ER). This will be his third career start. None of the Cubs have faced him.

Hendricks and Musgrove close out the series tomorrow at 6:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

When Rizzo gets drilled today, I'd love to see im go after Hurdle,  rather than the pitcher who is following Hurdle's orders.

Where is Eddie Butler these days? I know he is on the DL, but never hear a thing about him. Is he in AZ. Phil?

Gotta love the "...the Cubs have never faced him before."

The team typically manages to turn these guys into Cy Young for a day. Last week's game against the Tribe and Pluto (3 hit shutout) case in point. Among many more.

a.alzolay: 4ip 0h 0bb 3k...60 pitches

no idea why he was removed after only throwing 60 pitches, but it's supposedly not injury (or keeping him fresh for a call-up). odd way to cap 4 perfect innings when he was allowed to throw 90 pitches and suck recently.

also, b.markey showed up after alzolay to give up 4 runs because why not...

Zobrist 2B, Schwarber LF, Bryant 3B, Rizzo 1B, Contreras C, Happ CF, Russell SS, Heyward RF, Lester P

If Almora had started in CF instead of Happ he would have hit a five run homer in the first inning -- well, at least Happ didn't strike out.

happ is pretty much the worst human being without a twitter account...wait, he has a twitter account...dude is straight up literally hitler.

Killer season--you mean the one where Heyward hit 13 home runs in 610 PAs? He's always underachieved with his bat. But they liked him for his age and demeanor and smarts (and his glove, obviously), and, who knows, maybe he'll still turn into something. He's still a young guy (29). He does look a little better these days, to me, than before. Every couple of games he gets the barrel on the ball and yanks one down the line with authority. He also hits line drives to the opposite field. So that's two things he can do with the bat other than grounding to first or second. Getting rid of Mallee and Hinske was a good first step. I don't think Chili Davis is into mechanical overhauls of a hitter's swing.

Maybe not a Killer Season, but pretty damn good in 2015: -- 6.6 WAR, 15th in MVP voting, .293 BA, .359 OBP, 23/26 SB, Gold Glove. He's not a power hitter, but I think we'd all sign up for those 2015 numbers (or ever a reasonable facsimile) for the next several years.

Phil: Great to see what Rosario is doing!

Do you think having Rosario may have influenced/impacted the front office's decision on including Hope in the trade for Busch at all?

it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

a notion left long in the past, unearthed, polished for modern audiences and popular as ever.

No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song.

In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.

Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

ooof...this is just as likely as anything.  professional organists are weird humans.

Maybe it is only played when the hitter thus far in the game is "oh for two"-na at the plate?

  • crunch (view)

who was AB when it was being played?  it could be something as corny as playing it for nick fortes because fortes/fortuna...fortes...marlins...fish...tuna...sigh.

while the cubs organ player isn't a frequent groaner weaponizing the organ song selection, they all dabble in it.
