Hey Phil, thanks for the roster update. Any word on why Florencio Serrano is inactive? And is it accurate that just because he's listed as inactive with DSL1, that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be playing in the DSL this season when/if he returns?

K-DUB: Aliendo, Carrillo, Espinal, Espinoza, Herrera, Mora, Quintero, and Serrano Jr are on the Restricted List because they have not yet reported to the Cubs Dominican Academy.

In the case of everybody except Espinal (who is the only one of the eight from the Dominican Republic), it is probably visa-related. Sometimes there are delays in the processing and issuance of Dominican work visas to individuals from other countries (especially individuals from Venezuela and Mexico).

As to whether being on a particular minor league reserve list means the player necessarily will play with that affiliate, the answer is no. But Serrano was not at Extended Spring Training, so I doubt that he will be assigned to one of the AZL Cubs teams. At least not right away.

Thank you so much, Phil. I asked about Serrano because, as you know, he was born and grew up in Texas, living there until his freshman year in high school so coming to the States is not an issue (though getting a visa to the DR certainly might). The other high profile Mexican prospects the Cubs signed recently: Luis Verdugo, Jose Albertos and Isaac Paredes didn't spend any time in the DSL. Plus, Serrano's already 18. It just seems odd that he hasn't arrived yet and was wondering if you had heard anything. And thank you for the clarification on the inactive lists. Whereas being listed on a DSL inactive list could be an indication that a player would start the year (whenever he reports) in the DSL, it again seems odd that Serrano would. Is the AZL inactive list full? Thanks again for helping me understand all this minutiae.

The Cubs have signed 17-year old IFA INF Augusto Acevedo and he has been assigned to DSL Cubs #2. Acevedo is the 43rd IFA signed by the Cubs in the 2017-18 ISP.

The last date an MLB club can sign a 2017-18 IFA is June 15th, and then the window closes until the start of the 2018-19 ISP on July 2nd.

Also, 17-year old Venezuelan catcher Pablo Aliendo (who was signed by the Cubs last month) has been reinstated from the Restricted List and has been assigned to DSL Cubs #1.

The Cubs have signed three second-contract minor league free-agents and they have been assigned to the Cubs Dominican Academy:

RHP Donato Auguste (previously released by KC)
LHP Anderson Parra (previously released by PHI)
C Juan Vasquez (previously released by SD)

Auguste was assigned to DSL Cubs #1 and Parra and J. Vasquez were assigned to DSL Cubs #2.

Also, four IFA signed by the Cubs during the 2017-18 ISP (LHP Alejandro Carrillo, RHP Manuel Espinoza, INF Juan Mora, and C Malcom Quintero) have been reinstated from the Restricted List. Carrillo and Espinoza have been assigned to DSL Cubs #1 and Mora and Quintero have been assigned to DSL Cubs #2. (Carrillo, Espinoza, and Mora are from Mexico, and Quintero is from Venezuela).

Season is over for DSL Cubs #1 and DSL Cubs #2, so expect a spate of Cubs J-2 IFA signings because players signed after the conclusion of the DSL regular season get an extra year before they become Rule 5 Draft eligible.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
