Minor League Rosters
Rule 5 Draft
Minor League Free-Agents

Angels Net Nada from Pierce, Kyuji, and Rosscup at Riverview Park

RHP Pierce Johnson (AA Tennessee 7-day DL - calf - hadn't thrown in a game since May 19th), RHP Kyuji Fujikawa (Cubs MLB 60-day DL - 2013 TJS - hadn't thrown in a Cactus League EXST game since last Monday), and LHP Zac Rosscup (Cubs 15-day DL - shoulder - hadn't thrown in a game since May 9th) combined to toss 3.2 IP of two-hit shutout ball and Danny Canela belted a double and a triple for the Cubs, and LHP Jonah Wesely threw three innings of one-hit shutout ball with five strikeouts for the Angels, as the two teams played to a 2-2 tie in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning on Field #4 at the Under Armour Performance Center at Riverview Park in Mesa, AZ.

42-year old OF Manny Ramirez (signed by the Cubs last week to be a player-coach at AAA Iowa) has arrived at Riverview Park to get into playing shape, and so security has been increased. There was a definite uptick in attendance today (most-likely related to Manny's expected arrival), although ManRam did not play in the EXST game.

17-year old OF Eloy Jimenez was at Riverview Park today, too, watching the game from the bleachers (he hasn't played in a game since last Tuesday). Whether his trip to the DSL has been indefinitely postponed or just temporarily delayed remains to be seen. It would be nice if Eloy could play in at least one or two more Cactus League EXST games, though, since he leads the EXST Cubs in RBI and is (was) in the middle of a hot streak (hitting 360/385/640 since May 14th).

LHP Andin Diaz (who was assigned to the DSL Cubs last Friday) was not present at Riverview today and presumably has reported to the DSL Cubs, although (who knows?) maybe he'll pop up again, too.

Here is the abridged box score from today's game (Cubs players only):

HAGSAG: Fujikawa keeps having minor setbacks that keep him from completing his rehab down here. Like he'll warm up in the bullpen and then go back to the clubhouse instead of pitching in the game, and then it's a few more days until you see him pitch in a game (although he does play catch most every day on the Agility Field).

He did throw OK in the game today, although he didn't get many swings & misses. Hopefully he can stay on course and get out of here pretty soon.

Rosscup was throwing gas today, and his breaking ball looked great, too. If there are no setbacks, he could be at Iowa or even back up with the Cubs in fairly short order.

Pierce Johnson struggled to throw strikes in his one inning (24 pitches - 15 strikes), although at least there didn't appear to be anything wrong with his leg (calf).

Beefy to the DL, Whiteside called up, Rondon off paternity leave and Jose Veras DFA'd

eli whiteside being allowed near a MLB club is f'n embarrassing. the cubs just brought up a guy hitting .171 in the minors...who hit .187 last year in the minors. the guy last had a .300+ ob% in 2004...in AA. it's not even like he's an elite defender, though it is his strong point now that the power promise he used to show seems to be tapped out. there's already enough embarrassing about the past 3-4 years without piling it on with eli f'n whiteside.

lulz. i wonder what magical "veteran presence" he has to even still be in the game...much less get employeed by theo/jed. sure, he calls a good game, has a good arm, and stops balls...but he's not so good you can ignore his almost complete lack of bat.

FWIW, as a post 2013 Article XX-B MLB free-agent who signed a Major League contract after 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day following the conclusion of the 2013 World Series, Jose Veras has an automatic "no trade" right through June 15th. Veras can waive this right, but if he does he can be traded only for player contracts and/or cash with a maximum aggregate value of $50,000. (Not that he would have much trade value). Also, because he has accrued more than five years of MLB Service Time, Veras must give his permission before he can be sent outright to the minors. So it is VERY likely that he will be released.

Six Smokies are Southern League all stars: Bruno, Bryant, Andreoli, Black, Rivero & Lopez.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
