Cubs @ Phillies: Lackey vs Velasquez (Game 58)

You gotta pay the troll toll, if you wanna get into that boy's soul.CHC (40-17): RHP John Lackey (6-2, 2.88)
PHI (29-30): RHP Vince Velasquez (5-2, 3.67)
First pitch: 12:05pmCST

Lackey beat the D’backs on Friday (6.2 IP, 0 ER, 9 K, 2 BB). He gave up 1 ER over 7 innings to beat the Phills the time before that. He’s 2-1 with a 4.55 so far on the road this year. The Phillies are 21-76 (.276) against him. Herrera is 3-7, and Bourjos is 3-6.

Vincent Vega Velasquez had a no-decision against the Brewers his last time out (4.1 IP, 2 ER, 6 K, 3 BB). He lost to the Cubs at Wrigley before that (4.2 IP, 7 ER, 6 K, 2 BB). The Cubs are 9-20 (.450) against him. Montero is 2-3 with a HR.

An off day tomorrow, then it’s on to beat up on the Braves, with Hammel (7-1, 2.14) versus Norris (1-7, 5.28) at 6:35pmCST.

Go, Cubs!

Should be Fowler's ball but Almora acts like a CF even when he's in left. Fowler yields the point quickly. (So who's the rookie?) Probably will lessen the likelihood of collisions involving the centerfielder--although I can imagine Heyward not wanting to give up on a ball. But Schwarber and others will probably stay out of Almora's way. Impressed by how big Almora is already. Should continue to fill out, as we see with Bryant, Baez.

Not blaming Richard for passed ball/wild pitch, Miggy should be able to block it when he calls for pitch in the dirt.

Took a trip to South Bend for last night's game -- a fun small-town experience. The ballpark feels brand new. Eloy Jiminez looks like a man among boys physically (although he still has the face and the smile of a kid), and had several good plate appearances. Eddy Julio Martinez looked overmatched (to me, anyway). Donnie Dewees can fly.

The sandwich is written up in the SB (free!) program in an article highlighting the "quality food" available at the ballpark this year: "macaroni mixed with house-made beer cheese, topped with crispy bacon, another layer of American cheese, Tabasco marinated tomatoes on Texas Toast, and then deep fried to perfection." Gotta love the "...to perfection".

Pirates finally lose to Mets in extra innings and the Pirates fly to Denver for a rain-out make up game tomorrow then fly back to Pittsburgh for a weekend series vs StL

AZ PHIL- Does Christian Villanueva accure MLB service time currently. I know players accure MLB service time even if they spend the entire year on the DL, like Jacob Turner last year and Zac Rosscup this year. Both injuries to Turner/Rosscup and Villanueva occurred in spring training. Difference being from the past season Turner/Rosscup was still on the 25Man, Villanueva was on the 40Man and still optioned at Iowa when the season ended. I read the Service time rules etc. and no mention of spring training injuries in this situation.

CUBBIES 4 EVER:  A player on an MLB Reserve accrues one day of MLB Service Time for each day of the MLB regular season the player spends on an MLB DL (60-day, 15-day, and/or 7-day concussion). It doesn't matter if the player was placed on the club's MLB DL during Spring Training (prior to MLB Opening Day), and it doesn't matter whether the player was on an MLB Active List at the close of the previous MLB regular season. (All players on Optional Assignment to the minors must be recalled no later than the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season, and all players on an MLB Reserve List are technically on the Active List beginning with the start of Spring Training unless and until the player is optioned to the minors or placed on the DL. The MLB Active List must be cut to 25 by 3 PM Eastern on MLB Opening Day).

As far as the MLB post-season is concerned, ALL players on the club's MLB Reserve List ("40-man roster") who are not on the club''s 60-day DL are considered "Reserved," and only the players designated "Active" for each post-season series (LDS, LCS, and WS) are placved on the club's Active List.

So (for example) Dallas Beeler and Aaron Brooks were placed on the Cubs MLB DL during Spring Training prior to being optioned to the minors, so they have been accruing MLB Service Time and are being paid at the Major League rate while they are on the DL. Also, while they are at Extended Spring Training they get to pitch in Cactus League EXST games with the official MLB Baseball (because they are considered "Major League" players) instead of with the official minor league baseball (the Cubs bring a bag of Major League baseballs to the Cactus League EXST games and give them to the umpires whenever Beeler and/or Brooks pitch),.

Conversely, Pierce Johnson is (like Beeler and Brooks) on the Cubs MLB Reserve List but he is considered a "minor league player" because he was placed on the AAA Iowa DL after being optiioned to the minors, so he is not accruing MLB Service Time while he is on the Iowa DL, he is being paid at the minor league split rate, and he has to use the official minor league baseball in Cactus League Extended Spring Training games (just like a 17-year old rookie pitcher making his pro debut at EXST).

Christian Villanueva is like Beeler and Brooks, in that he is on the Cubs MLB 60-day DL (he was placed on the DL during Spring Training), so he is accruing MLB Service Time and is being paid at the Major League salary rate for each day he spends on the Cubs 60-day DL during the 2016 MLB regular season.

It might be better to use the term "MLB Active List" rather than "25-man roster" when referring to an MLB club's active roster, because while the MLB Active List limit is usually 25, the limit changes to 40 on September 1st. and remains at 40 during Spring Training until MLB Opening Day (with the exception of club's participating in the MLB post-season, who must play with 25-man rosters in the LDS, LCS, and/or World Series), So Villanuieva was in fact on the Cubs "Active List" (beginning with the start of Spring Training) prior to being placed on the DL.

I dislike days off. Was looking back at the schedule so far though and 13 of the 17 losses have been by 2 runs or less and the vast majority of those we've had runners in scoring position in the 8th or 9th inning. I also read that the Cubs have outscored opponents in every inning including extras. Between the great play and eminently likable players out there just having fun I can't remember a season I've had so much fun watching this team.

Wow we just traded Alcantara for Coghlan whose expected to replace La Stella who is going to the DL for his hamstring

Some wise guy was tweeting about Heyward no longer having the lowest slugging % now with Coughlan on the team. I bet the bat starts heating up soon. Sucks that LaStella is missing the series against his old team. What did he injure last year, a lat pull or something? Also may explain why Travis Wood pinch ran for him the other day.

Wow - White Sox DFA Mat "best MLB pitcher in April" Latos. He and Alber both pitched out of their minds for a few weeks, leading some (i.e. Sox broadcasters) to think the team was for real. In addition, they have Austin Jackson and Jimmy Rollins in their starting lineup. Stoney should have known better. Hawk, well, he's always good for a Yaz story or two.

Cubs now have a 10-game lead in the division. 10. Game. Lead. Just step back for a moment, and remember -- 2 years ago today, Juen 9, 2014: the Cubs lost to PIT, falling to 25-36. The lineup: Bonafacio 2B Lake CF Rizzo 1B Castro SS Valbuena 3B Schierholz RF Coghlan LF Baker C EJax P Rizzo is the only remaining everyday starter. No Fowler, Heyward, Bryant, Zobrist, Russell, Soler, Schwarber (~sob~), Montero, Ross, Baez, etc. This was the era where Mike Olt and Brian Schlitter were some of the big hopes. It is truly amazing how Theo and group has rebuilt this team in 2 years.

Woof -- Pirates left Locke in long enough to give up 11 ER. Welcome to Denver. Grab some weed on the way out of the ballpark -- you'll need it.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.
