There's an article that says the Cubs are rumored to be in talks with the Yankees about Chapman. Although Chapman is a great closer, I like Miller better because of the off field baggage Chapman brings and Rondon is already a great closer. I worry that bringing in Chapman would create tension similar to Storen and Papelbon last season. Rondon has been great this year. Just hasn't gotten many save opportunities because we've creamed so many teams. http://sportsmockery.com/2016/06/rumor-cubs-discussing-blockbuster-trad…

That article cites a tweet by someone named Christopher Meola, who references to a "source" and who seems to have no professional connection of any kind to sports journalism. But he is a "Brand Specialist" in Miami, according to LinkedIn, so hey....

Meola's tweet says the proposed trade involves shipping Baez, Warren, and a Prospect to the Yankees.  Can't see the Cubs shipping off Baez at this particular moment, and it seems odd we'd trade Warren back to NYY.

Then again, this Meola guy evidently scooped everyone on the Stanton contract, and even Robothal had to acknowledge it, so who knows...

if they give up that much talent for 3.5 months and some playoffs for a.chapman in his final year of club control they've lost their minds. they'd have to give him a QA of $16m-ish and hope he leaves to recoup any value back from the trade...hell of a risk. yeah, he's got great value and will pull it from someone, but it's a hell of a price for what's effectively 50-ish innings of ball for the rest of the season + playoffs.

Agreed.  I could see this being a fair haul for Miller, but I wouldn't do it for Chapman.  More than anything, it just doesn't make sense to me unless they are convinced Soler and LaStella and Rizzo's present ailments are all one-off, short-term, non-issues...

Rizzo scratched from the lineup with back stiffness. Almora Jr. to get the start instead.

I was going to report that I shut down field operations in central South Carolina at noon and drove the 4:15 to get me to the hotel about 5 mins away from Turner Field, and that me and my 2008 NL Central Division Champions ball cap and my pasty white legs were headed to all three Cubs games this weekend. And that I was going to try to not suck. But since Rizzo is hurt, and seeing the recent threats and punishments to posters for lesser infractions at games they attended, maybe I was just thinking about doing all that.

"Almora". Just "Almora". Please. If his first name were Steph or Klay or Michael, he wouldn't be "Jr." The "Jr." is associated with his first name, not his last. He is "Albert Jr." In addition to El Professor, the Cubs just drafted another pitcher from Dartmouth, so let's clean up the grammar here, shall we?

Trans -- I think the link is wrong about changing the suffix when the elder dies. I, sadly, am a "3rd", which is my legal name on my birth certificate. When my grandfather, and father, passed away, I did not get "promoted". And, I think the link supports my position on no using "Jr." when only using last names! My work here is done.

Ok, I see what you mean.  What I was going for is that grammatically speaking, we aren't supposed to shorten MLKJ to either Martin Jr. OR King Jr.  It's just Martin, or King, with the Jr used only with the complete name.  (Or, we could just ASK Albert Amora Jr. what his preference is....)  But I think I see what you're getting at....

Before the game's start, Fan Graphs gave the Cubs a bit about a 60% likelihood of winning.  Only Rockies (at home with Gray pitching against Padres) had a better likelihood.

I'm too tired of writing, today, to do a game recap, (and I wouldn't want to bury AZ Phil's writeup of the Draft) but will be in Parachat if people want to make fun of the Braves...

almora with mo D. he's never seen that OF, much less the wall, and he handles it like it's his home park.

Other than Almora (and thanks to all for abstaining on the "Jr."), this is a leading candidate for worst game of the year. Woof.

c.black debuts in AAA 1ip 0h 0bb 1k w.contreras goes 3/4 with a double and manages a pickoff at 1st...and his 7th passed ball. g.soto still sucks.

busch is having a really intense k-filled mini slump.  he deserves better after coming back to wrigley after that hot road trip.

i know alzolay isn't having a great time right now, but i trust hector "ball 4" neris even less than alzolay based on what i've seen coming out of their arms.

Neris reminds me of Don “Full Pack” Stanhouse.

Happ, Busch, Dansby and Madrigal have a combined 25 runners left on base through 7 innings, with Busch accounting for 9 of those.  Seems like a lot.

PCA finally gets a hit!  2r HR!!!

They certainly could be coupled. It could also be the case that a team needs good players at the heart of the team and if they are not coming from one source (development) they have to be sought out elsewhere. I don't see the evidence needed to infer the cause.

bases loaded for the cubs, 0 out...and no runs score.

Walker was a complimentary piece who was well past his prime. Edmonds, Holliday, Ozzie Smith and a few others were good trades. Notably, they have almost always been quiet in the free agent market. But the fundamental workings of the organization were always based primarily upon the constant output of a well oiled minor league organization. That organization has ground to a halt. And when did that hard stop start to happen? Right at the beginning of the Goldschmidt/Arenado era, perpetuated by the Contreras signing, followed by the rotation purchases during the last offseason. The timing is undeniable and, in my mind, not coincidental.

Again, we are all saying that player development became deemphasized. I’m just linking it directly to the recent trades and involvement in the free agent market. I don’t see how the two concepts can be decoupled.

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!
