Dodgers @ Cubs: Hill vs Montgomery (Game 70)

LAD (38-33): LHP Rich Hill (1-2, 6.20)
CHC (40-29): LHP Mike Montgomery (2-2, 3.31)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Montgomery gave up 1 ER in 6 innings and lost in Milwaukee on Wednesday. It was another one of those games where the Cubs try to win a game with pitching and defense alone. Overall, the Dodgers are 5-27 (.185) against him. Forsythe is 2-4; Barnes has a HR in his only AB.

The Old Rich Hill and his blister left after 2 pitches in his last outing, May 19 in D.C. (We also would have accepted Rich Hill Classic.) Only Zobrist (1-2) and Gimenez (0-1) have faced him.

Stripling and Lester close it out tomorrow at 1:20pmCST.

Go Cubs!

bases loaded 0 out for LA...none score.

woo monty, but also boo monty...mostly woo monty...mostly...

3 hits and 3 walks through 3ip for montgomery...lucky he's got given up a run.

unless he gets things going he'll be lucky to go more than 5ip.

he gets through 6ip with 100 pitches.

6ip 5h 4bb 5k, 1r/er

he's given up 4 runs over 29.2ip in his last 5 outings.

he's also fully stretched out to remain a starter should some "decisions" need to be made upon darvish's return *cough*chatwood*cough*

Is it just me or has Happ been struck out looking on a borderline call a lot over the past week or two?

leadoff triple bryant, bottom 10!

woo.

i got nothing against puig...i like "baseball is fun"...but it was nice seeing him get the crap end of playing that off the wall.

Almora starts, Cubs win -- Joe, it's basic math (AA = W).  Phew -- nice ending to a tough day. Feels so much better than if the games were reversed.  Also -- good job of throwing strikes by Rob Z. -- that was a very tough spot to come into.

Bizarre move by Dave Roberts in the 10th -- KB on 3rd, no out, he walks Javy, who strikes out a ton, and pitches to Almora, who is hitting .320.  I really don't get that.  Either walk the bases loaded to set up a force at home, or try to strike out Baez and walk AA to set up a possible inning-ending DP.  Very odd.

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!
