Cardinals @ Cubs: Wainwright vs Hammel (Game 69)

Well, damn.Last night's game was the kind of game the Cubs have been finding a way to win. Last night--not so much. Tonight feels like time for a little revenge.

STL (36-33): RHP Adam Wainwright (5-4, 4.78)
CHC (47-21): RHP Jason Hammel (7-2, 2.26)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Hammel had a no-decision against the Nats on Wednesday (7 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB). He’s 2-0 with a 1.35 in his two starts against the Cards this season. Overall, they are 44-150 (.293) against him. Peralta is 9-23 with 2 HR.

Wainwright had a no-decision his last time out (7 IP, 0 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) against the Astros. He had a no-decision against the Cubs in St. Louis last month, giving up 3 ER in 6 innings in the 4-3 Cardinal win. The Cubs are 37-152 (243) against him. Montero is 7-21 with a HR.

Wacha (2-7, 4.56) versus Arrieta (11-1, 1.74) at 1:20pmCST to close it out tomorrow.

Go Cubs!

"I would keep Montero with Hendricks for now." If players were chess pieces, maybe, JB. But they are proud professionals. The Cubs obviously wants Contreras to catch as many games as possible, and it would be infra dig for Montero to lose Arietta.

Tonight's game is a lock. The billybucks factor: Cubs always win the day after I go and witness a gut-wrenching defeat.

Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat Warren goes to Iowa to get stretched out. He'll make start before All Star break. #Cubs Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat #Cubs recall RHP Spencer Patton and select contract of LHP Gerardo Concepcion from Iowa

concepcion! 6 pitch K on moss...featured a 93mph fastball. neat. 1.1ip 0h 0bb 2k (1 of the Ks was on wainwright, but whatever...still an awesome relief debut)

Jason Heyward I was so excited the Cubs signed him. I had no idea he would be this bad in any "clutch" batting situation. He is the best right fielder I can remember (Sosa had some moments) post "Hawk". But...shit...he has been in a season-long slump. Really hurting this club in his spot.

Back-to-back one-run losses to the Cardinals, at home. With the tying and winning run on base in the 9th both games against a closer who is really struggling. Fuck. I'm sure there are more unpleasant sights in the world than watching the Cardinals celebrate a win at Wrigley -- I just can't think of any right now. This losing one-run games thing is becoming annoying. Fix it, please.

Would have liked a stronger start from Hammel, and anything with RISP from Heyward. Considering they have two just-up rookies, and missing Dex, Soler, LaStella (how about him ph in the 9th?), I honestly think ther are playing well. Got behind the 8-ball early with both Lackey & Hammel.

I really hate losing to the Cardinals. They had Rosenthal the day before yesterday. The rookies are a little overanxious at the plate, trying to do too much late in the game. Baez in particular, ok, he's not a rookie, yesterday was trying to smack a home run against Rosenthal. Just keep the chains moving, buddy. If you ever learn how to do that on a regular basis you'll have a salary twice that of Jason Heyward. Follow the money!!!! Concepcion looked so good I was thinking, "why were we watching Clayton Richard all those times?"

Nice article in the Trib today on the reasoning behind "Almora Jr." on the back of his uniform. As some have mentioned, it's to honor his ill father. Good on ya, Albert.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
